Julian smiled and nodded.
"All right. I’ll increase the amount of food according to your training volume and make sure you eat your fill!"
Torchic nodded excitedly, as if Julian had never let him eat his fill before.
But in reality, Torchic had eaten until he was full every single time.
Julian only stopped him from continuing because he was afraid Torchic would eat too much, end up with food piling in his stomach, and suffer indigestion.
But in Torchic’s simple little head, only being stuffed counted as being full.
If food did not reach his throat, Torchic would not stop eating.
When Torchic learned that he could eat more as long as he trained more, he was unbelievably excited.
He wished he could start training right now.
"Torchic!"
Julian did not know whether to laugh or cry as he nodded.
"Come with me. I’ll make you a weight."
Torchic’s body weight was only around ten pounds, so for Torchic’s first weighted training, Julian chose a five-pound iron block.
An ordinary Torchic only weighed about five pounds. Julian’s Torchic was probably heavier because he could eat so much.
When Julian had first received Torchic from Professor Rowan’s lab, Torchic had already weighed six pounds.
Unlike the researchers at Professor Rowan’s lab, Julian did not feed Torchic food according to the normal appetite of a Torchic.
Instead, he tailored the meal plan specifically for him. After measuring Torchic’s individual appetite, he fed him three meals a day in amounts that could actually fill him up.
In a short period of time, Torchic had gone from six pounds to ten pounds.
The weight block was wrapped in soft leather and fixed to Torchic’s back.
"All right, try moving around and see whether the weight falls off."
Torchic hopped and jumped around, but the weight remained firmly attached to his back.
"How is it? Heavy?"
Torchic shook his head. Although the five-pound weight was a little heavy, Torchic felt it was still within his tolerance.
As long as he could eat more, forget five pounds. Even if it were a ten-pound weight, he could still train with it on his back!
"Then run one lap around the training field first. I’ll see how effective it is."
On the first lap, Torchic still felt relaxed. He even ran thirty seconds faster than during normal training.
By the fifth lap, the weight block began showing its power, and Torchic started feeling uncomfortable.
By the eighth lap, Torchic completely realised just how heavy the weight block was.
In the past, he could run ten laps and still have energy left.
Today, by only the eighth lap, Torchic was already about to become a dead chicken.
Julian gently said, "Think about the extra meal. No matter what, you should at least run ten laps, don’t you think, Torchic?"
The moment extra meals were mentioned, Torchic’s body instantly surged with new motivation.
"Torchic!"
By the time he reached the tenth lap, he was on his last breath.
Julian immediately shouted, "Run one more lap, and I’ll add another bowl for you!"
Torchic instantly gained motivation. Full of invincible strength, he finished the eleventh lap.
Then he tiredly collapsed in front of Julian.
Julian immediately removed the weight block and held Torchic in his arms.
He released Aura to treat Torchic.
Training was 30% practice and 70% food.
If a Pokémon’s body was not properly maintained, hidden injuries would be left behind.
Besides ingredients that strengthened a Pokémon’s body and energy, a considerable portion of Pokémon food was actually made up of Berries and herbs with healing effects.
That allowed Pokémon to possess stronger bodies that remained in a healthy state.
With Aura healing, Julian could constantly monitor his Pokémon’s physical condition and treat the tiny injuries that Pokémon food could not handle.
Although Pokémon bodies were very mysterious, that did not mean they would not leave behind unhealable injuries in battle and training.
Even the most advanced treatment equipment in a Pokémon Centre could not guarantee a Pokémon would be completely healed.
Cases of Pokémon dying in battle were not common, but they were not zero either.
Even Ash’s Pikachu had been beaten by Raichu in Sinnoh until his heart stopped, almost dying on the operating table.
Of course, Torchic’s current training intensity was still nowhere near sudden-death levels. It would not even leave hidden injuries.
After Julian treated him with Aura, Torchic quickly recovered his energy.
He chirped noisily, demanding food.
Julian dotingly tapped Torchic on the forehead and said, "All right, I’ll feed you immediately."
After weighted training, things were indeed different. Torchic’s eating speed slowed slightly because of fatigue, but he still ate three bowls before reaching the standard line.
Julian shook his finger.
"You’ve already eaten one more bowl than usual. You can’t eat any more."
Torchic looked at the weight beside him, and his eyes lit up.
"Torchic!"
If he carried the weight block and ran eleven laps again, could he eat three more bowls?
Julian stopped him.
"No. You need to rest for half an hour after eating."
After his first Gym challenge and the temptation of eating more food, Torchic had completely fallen in love with the feeling of becoming stronger.
Torchic finally understood why, even though training was bitter and tiring, his older brothers could still train with smiles on their faces.
The feeling of defeating Shinx — even thinking back on it now, Torchic felt it was more comfortable than eating a bowl of Pokémon food.
After dealing with Torchic, Julian went to check Croagunk’s body again.
After defeating Staraptor today, Croagunk’s training had instead become even more serious.
Especially the Venoshock he had just comprehended. Croagunk repeatedly studied and explored it.
His training intensity had completely exceeded the standard Julian had set for him.
At Croagunk’s current training intensity, one careless moment could injure his body.
Julian shone Aura over Croagunk’s body and stopped Croagunk, who was currently training.
"Croagunk, don’t rush. In a couple of days, I’ll take you to Pastoria City. Pastoria City has a history of raising Croagunk, so there must be plenty of methods to help Croagunk evolve into Toxicroak."
Croagunk’s eyes lit up.
"Gunk?"
Julian nodded.
"There definitely will be!"
His firm tone made hope rise in Croagunk as well.
After receiving Julian’s comfort, Croagunk finally controlled his training intensity within a reasonable range.
Julian noticed on the other side, after finishing a day of work, Maylene and Kai were still full of energy.
The construction site’s workload seemed to have no effect on their bodies at all.
Kai placed both hands on his waist.
"I’m going to do one thousand push-ups and one thousand frog jumps before dinner. If I can’t finish them, I won’t eat dinner today!"
"Youth, burn!"
Julian: "... O.o..."
Maybe I shouldn’t have told him stories about Might Guy and Rock Lee...
He decided to be deaf and blind and return back to training with Croagunk.
Maylene shook her head. Kai was good in every way, but he liked saying strange things.
After Kai arrived, it felt like Veilstone Gym had become even more full of vitality.
After changing into a green martial arts uniform, Kai began doing frog jumps.
Maylene pressed a hand to her forehead and could not help sighing.
"There were clearly so many colours to choose from. Why did you insist on choosing green when my brother let you pick the colour of your martial arts uniform?"
As Kai did frog jumps, he answered, "Green is great. It symbolises forests and is full of life and energy. Youth should be green!"
Maylene shook her head.
He’s lost his mind
"Riolu, let’s go train too."
Maylene did not receive a reply. When she turned back, she found Riolu staring blankly at Julian.
"Riolu?"
During lunch, Riolu had already felt that Julian was somewhat different today.
After becoming familiar with it over the course of the day, Julian’s Aura had become even more obvious.
Riolu’s heart was filled with confusion.
Why had Julian’s Aura changed so much in such a short time?
If he could grasp it, would he be able to evolve into Lucario?
Following Riolu’s gaze, Maylene blinked.
"Is there something wrong with Brother?"
Julian smiled slightly.
"Maybe it’s because I can do this."
As he spoke, a mass of blue energy appeared at Julian’s fingertip.
Maylene’s eyes widened.
"Don’t tell me this is Aura?"
Julian nodded proudly.
"That’s right. I am an Aura Guardian!"
Kai was equally excited.
"Master, I want to learn this!"
