Chapter 1475: Chapter 481: A Person Cannot Live Only for Money (Part 3)
"I just don’t want to die in vain, I just want to go home, is that so wrong?!"
"Since you were coming! Why didn’t you come earlier! If you had come earlier, I wouldn’t have betrayed Jose! If you had told me earlier how strong you are, I wouldn’t have betrayed everyone!"
He spoke with tears, as if David and the others were at fault.
But David looked at him coldly, his gaze as steadfast as tempered steel, as he slowly loaded his pistol and said calmly,
"In Da Haguai, I met an old man who said he had seen Jose, even talked to him."
"Jose told him that when the guerrillas were active around Pig Bay, even if the house they lived in had broken walls or a leaking roof, no one would fix it."
"If the country became independent, everyone could go home, why bother repairing these rundown houses."
"He didn’t know whether the efforts of the guerrillas could truly lead to Cuba’s independence, but he believed the guerrilla actions must show people... we are still fighting, there are still people striving for Cuba’s independence, it’s a flag that must not fall."
Open the history books, look at the records of the battles fought by various nations for national independence, when swept into the tide of the era, obscured from seeing ahead or behind.
Not knowing if the path beneath your feet is right or wrong, if your persistence truly holds meaning, not knowing how future generations will evaluate you, or if your resistance and everyone else’s will really lead to a day of victory...
Facing colonialists and invaders so powerful they seem unbeatable, facing a war with overwhelming odds, seeming unwinnable.
The fleeting words "Eight-Year War of Resistance" and "Century of National Humiliation" record countless righteous individuals fallen in the path, unable to see the future, unsure if they’ll survive to see tomorrow.
But facing all this, not just eight years, even if eighty years! Eight hundred years! They still choose to press forward, facing their death calmly, leaving behind an unfaltering flag with their lives.
Finally sacrificing countless lives, struggling through many paths to find the only one that can save the nation and people.
"A person shouldn’t live just for money like you."
David raised his gun to aim at Kevin, his voice trembling too, but from anger, from release.
Perhaps the drugs muddled Kevin’s brain, dazedly, he saw countless figures standing behind David, some familiar, some not, all looking at him with the same gaze, and Jose was standing to David’s right.
Everyone spoke in unison,
"Traitor!"
"Ah! Ah!!"
These two words horrified Kevin more than death, screaming and struggling to stand, ignoring David’s gun, stumbling in panic deeper down the sewer.
Bang!
The gunshot echoed in the sewer, the bullet pierced Kevin’s body, but numbed by the drugs, he seemed oblivious, continuing to scream and flee.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Three consecutive shots pierced his chest, blood mist sprayed from the chest.
David watched as the staggering Kevin fell into the sewage, quietly lowered his gun, it wouldn’t take long for the maggots and microorganisms in the sewer to decompose the body.
David could understand Kevin’s betrayal, not everyone can persist through endless hardship, some will choose to give up, but he could not accept the betrayal.
Even if Kevin had left secretly without a word or confronted it openly, David believed Jose would have understood him.
But he chose the worst path.
His envy was to blame.
David closed his eyes, uttered softly,
"It’s over..."
The last former guerrilla member died by his hands.
He said to Olivia,
"Let’s go."
Finished speaking, he turned towards the exit, not waiting for Olivia who quickly followed, puzzled and asked,
"You seem unhappy? Come on, after a victory, executing a traitor, before I would have celebrated hard, like in the Chaotic Blade Association."
"I don’t drink, and there’s still more to do."
"Damn! You’re an adult, why so serious, want me to take you to find a couple of girls to unwind, I promise not to tell anyone else."
"What do you think would happen if I told the political commissar about this?"
Upon hearing the word commissar, Olivia cringed, pleaded repeatedly,
"No! Just joking around, begging you, don’t say, he’ll beat me to death with a brass-buckled belt."
Due to the diverse cultural level and background of Dragon Field Soldiers, governance proved particularly challenging, so commissars often used ’harsh’ methods, feared by soldiers more than anyone, even more than the enemy.
"Then you’d better stop talking like this."
Olivia ran ahead of David, walking backwards as she spoke oddly,
"Ah, just wanted to relax you, seeing your ’I am truly somber’ expression, made me miss the stuttering little guy from a year ago."
"...."
"By the way, now that we’ve won over Cuba, where do you think we’ll go next?"
Olivia continued to chatter,
"Best if we could return to Night City, I miss the days on the construction site, curious what Taiping Continent has turned into after so long away."
David touched the medal in his breast pocket, looked at the light filtering through the sewer pipe and said,
"There are more people waiting for me to liberate them; only by liberating the world, can WCJJ find its own liberation."
