Chapter 1425: Chapter 462: The Situation Is Settled (Part 3)
"Why are you letting them shout ’Long live Miles’? We’re the ones doing all the work, and in the end all the glory goes cheaply to that guy Miles."
Pan’an had never met Miles, but just going by that officer’s tone she used in interviews every day, Pan’an didn’t like her.
And Pan’an also knew Miles was only a shield pushed out by Lin Miao, but she still couldn’t stand it.
"Pan’an."
Lin Miao looked at Pan’an with a half-smile and asked,
"Do you know what kind of president is the greatest in people’s hearts?"
Pan’an found the question a bit baffling. She shook her head.
"Hell if I know. I think none of them are any good."
Lin Miao said cheerily,
"Let me tell you, there’s only one kind of president who’s truly great."
"The one who dies for the people’s revolution."
"Just like in love—there’s nothing more beautiful than the girlfriend who exists only as a white moonlight in your memory, and nothing more delicious than the candy you ate as a kid."
"Her name will stay forever in people’s hearts—of course, only in their hearts."
Pan’an half understood, half didn’t, and after forcing her brain to run at full speed, she was a bit stunned.
"You... you’re going to kill Miles?"
"Me? No, no, no."
Lin Miao hurriedly shook his head and made a shushing gesture.
"I’m the United States’ most loyal servant. My loyalty to President Miles is witnessed by heaven and earth. How could I possibly plot to harm her?"
"The ones who’ll kill her are of course treacherous rebels, scheming villains who usurp the party."
As he spoke, the crowds had already stormed into the company building.
"Let’s go up and take a look. I’ve been in Detroit this long and still haven’t met this company’s leadership. That’s a bit hard to justify."
Employees inside the building tried to close the doors, but with the power cut and no digital control system, the blast doors couldn’t be activated. The bulletproof glass alone was smashed open by the enraged crowd in just a few blows, and they poured in all at once.
Fortunately there were large numbers of officers and Adcardo people maintaining order. Even the Efficiency Department had no choice but to join in under Lin Miao’s orders. Those low-level company dogs were lucky not to be lynched by the crowd; the resistance they ran into wasn’t serious. Usually after a brief exchange of fire, the company dogs realized the tide had turned and quickly collapsed and surrendered.
The ones who really suffered were the company’s middle and upper management. They were dragged out of their offices one by one; at this moment all their former lofty arrogance from on high was gone.
The elegant masks they’d worn to show off their noble status were torn completely away, leaving only their pathetic posture as they knelt before the masses, howling and begging for mercy.
A worker grabbed a stool and was about to crack open the skull of the General Motors Logistics Department minister. He remembered clearly how this bastard had once used a single regulation to fire more than a hundred drivers, never paid a cent of the promised compensation, and even turned around to sue the drivers for damages to the company.
Seeing this executive who had lost all ability to resist because his implants were locked and his Behavior Chip had been scrapped—forced to kneel and plead—the worker’s eyes filled with the pleasure of revenge.
"Wait!"
Recognizing who it was, Walt hurried forward and grabbed the stool. He hadn’t forgotten what Lin Miao had told him.
"What are you doing? Why are you stopping me?"
The worker glared angrily at Walt.
"He can’t die here."
"What the hell do you mean? This bastard doesn’t deserve to die?"
Although breaking through downtown with the march and storming the company building had many people so excited they could barely contain themselves, along the way it was always ’this you can’t smash, that you can’t hit’. Quite a few people in the marching crowd were feeling pent-up frustration.
Looking at the minister, Walt felt a sort of bleak fear, like a rabbit watching a fox die. Deep down he still held onto the hope of becoming a minister again someday, an upper-class person. But somehow, seeing the minister like this made him think of himself...
Would he also someday kneel like this before ordinary people?
Was the power he’d craved all his life really this fragile?
In his panic, Walt’s voice trembled, and he clenched his teeth as he spoke.
"He... he... he deserves to die."
"But it has to be through public sentencing according to the law. Whatever crime he’s guilty of, that’s what he should get. Not beaten to death here by you."
"The constitution? Are you kidding me?! How is that thing any different from scrap paper?"
The worker practically wanted to say, ’your law makes me laugh’. If the constitution were useful, would these companies have grown this arrogant?
They had more crooked lawyers than you could count. As long as there was a loophole, those lawyers could team up with the judiciary to deliver a not-guilty verdict.
Go a step further and these people could draft a legal clause for you on the spot.
"It’s... it’s a public court. Mr. Lin said we have to collect evidence first, and once it’s all gathered we’ll hold a public trial on the plaza. Even if you don’t trust me, you should trust Mr. Lin."
"....."
The worker raised the stool several times, but after a long internal struggle he finally put it down, unwillingly.
Meanwhile, on the rooftop terrace of the General Mansion, Christopher’s clothes fluttered wildly in the wind as he watched Lin Miao approach step by step from not far away. His face had become calm.
"Minister Lin, I admit that tonight you’ve won. But there’s one thing I don’t understand."
"What are you really after?"
Behind Christopher was the edge of the rooftop. One more step back and he would plummet hundreds of meters, shattering into pieces.
"Everyone in the United States saw what happened tonight. Do you have any idea how big a storm this will cause? You’ve violated everyone’s taboo."
"You’re very capable—but can you stand against the crusade from all the companies in the United States, even the World Corporation?"
Facing the questioning, Lin Miao simply plopped down onto the ground.
"I’ve got nothing to say to shortsighted idiots like you. You had a clear highway and refused to take it, insisting on hugging your little petty gains all the way to your death. People like that aren’t worth my breath. So, are you going to jump or not? I’m waiting to watch the show."
"....."
Christopher’s chest heaved violently. After several seconds he finally spat out,
"Fuck! You’ve got balls!"
Then he sprang forward, leaping toward the street beyond the guardrail.
More than ten seconds later, they finally heard a snap from below.
Lin Miao got up, ready to inform Miles to prepare to nationalize the three major corporations, when a message window suddenly popped up with an urgent notification.
The players had found the European Fleet’s location.
