Chapter 1409: Chapter 457: Of All Things, Why Be a Human Prostitute? (Part 2)
"In layman’s terms, it’s assassination."
This task isn’t suitable for the drama-prone players; they can provide help backstage, but not act directly.
"Lucy, did Song Zhaomei find that person?"
"Found him, but he refused. He said he no longer wants to be involved in such scheming, being a peaceful citizen is quite nice."
Lucy changed her posture, lying back on the table and looking at Lin Miao, like a lazy white cat.
"You know, sometimes I wonder if you could be like him."
"If he could really settle down, he wouldn’t have helped out many times."
Lin Miao couldn’t answer Lucy’s question.
He could probably guess what Solomon Lid is thinking, this person is surely very stubborn and indecisive.
According to Song Zhaomei’s description, this guy always wants to cover all bases, abandoning none—New America, companions, government, missions...
But in the end, things always move in a direction he doesn’t want, and he gets stuck in the middle shouting,
"It hurts, it hurts too much!"
What an Oga in the flesh, the two of you are a perfect match.
"Let Song Zhaomei take this material to negotiate with him; if he won’t help me, maybe he’ll help New America and humanity out of personal ethics. If he agrees, he can terminate or refuse any of my missions, and I’ll cover the operational costs."
"Hmm."
Lucy agreed reluctantly and then left.
Lin Miao went to Detroit; they could only meet through this way, which annoyed her greatly.
Things never come singly; just after Lucy left, Hathaway showed up.
In the video call, Hathaway looked tense, her hair messy, speaking hesitantly, her mental state very off.
"Boss, I... I... I have something to tell you."
Lin Miao frowned.
"Speak. Why are you stammering?"
"I... you..."
Hathaway looked at Lin Miao.
"Boss, have you noticed anything abnormal about your body? If so, when did it start?"
"My body is doing great, I have a good appetite."
Lin Miao found Hathaway’s question bizarre, somewhat suspiciously asked,
"Is there something wrong with my body?"
Before coming to Detroit, Lin Miao had Hathaway do a complete blood test and physical exam, so it was probably due to that.
"Do you remember the last time you excreted?"
"Why are you asking that?"
Lin Miao thought for a moment and replied,
"It’s been a while, three or four days maybe."
"Doesn’t that seem odd to you?"
"The author didn’t write it, how could I know? Maybe I’m constipated. Besides, what novel details the protagonist’s bowel movements?"
Lin Miao didn’t find this strange.
In the cyborg era, anything is possible. Some people don’t eat food, just take nutrient injections; some go a month without a bowel movement. He’s got several synthetic organs too, perhaps it’s the bone marrow’s effect.
Hathaway mustered her courage, speaking frankly,
"Boss, you might not be human anymore."
"Say that again!"
"I’m serious."
Hathaway sent through Lin Miao’s medical report.
"Have you heard of mitochondria, the cell organelle?"
"Learned it in class, vaguely remember, it’s supposed to provide energy, right?"
Though most biology knowledge had been returned to the high school teacher, some technical terms remained recognized.
Hathaway looked at Lin Miao with an eerie gaze, not one meant for a human but rather for an extraterrestrial being.
"According to our latest cytological research, in the ancient anaerobic unicellular era, many cells acquired food by engulfing others. So, larger cells held significant advantages."
"However, the bigger the cells, the more energy they consumed, thus multicellular organisms never emerged."
"Perhaps due to unknown reasons, a large cell didn’t digest a smaller cell while engulfing it, forming a subtle symbiotic relationship."
"The large cell provided nutrients and protection, while the smaller cell converted oxygen into ATP, meaning energy. Thus, cells began to have surplus energy to evolve into multicellular organisms."
"This smaller cell was the prototype of mitochondria, now not only providing energy but also controlling countless cellular metabolisms, even integrating DNA..."
"So what’s your point in telling me all this?"
Lin Miao asked nervously.
"Is there an issue with my mitochondria?"
"No."
Hathaway shook her head repeatedly.
"The problem isn’t with the mitochondria. Based on my observations, your body’s cells likely have a second ’mitochondria,’ and this one is artificial."
"Do you remember the carbon plague nanovirus we talked about last time?"
"I remember... are you saying..."
"Yes, that thing has entered your cells, not just a particular system’s cells but every cell, including red ones. Moreover, apart from cells, your body has developed a human-nonexistent organ as a virus cluster."
"Will I die?"
"I don’t know."
Hathaway looked at Lin Miao as if he were a specter.
"These nanoviruses pervade every corner of your body, adding a layer of nanostructure to pre-existing cell membranes, as if armoring a small car with tank armament, outstandingly dissipating impact."
