Chapter 91: Chosen

I went when she said come here.

The hall was dark. The bedroom door was open the width of her hand on the frame. Evelyn stood just inside, shirt buttoned wrong again, shorts still in her fist, bare legs, hair loose from the pillow. She looked at my empty hands first, as if I might have brought an excuse with me.

"You waited for the words," she said.

"You said anything else wasn’t permission."

"Good." She stepped back. "In. Close it. Click, not lock. Then ask where your hands go before they go anywhere. That rule survived. It’s still surviving."

I closed the door to the click. The room smelled like clean sheet and her skin. The glass was gone. The lamp was on, low. She had turned it on for this and was already regretting the light.

"Where do you want them?" I asked.

"Not on me yet." She sat on the edge of the bed and put the shorts down beside her, unfolded this time. A different decision. "Palms on your own thighs. Sit on the chair. I want to see you hear the rest before I move you."

I sat. Palms on my thighs. She watched them stay there and some of the tightness left her mouth.

"I lost twice today," she said. "Kitchen. Now this. I’m not pretending it’s water. I’m also not pretending it’s last night. Last night you were inside me until I couldn’t hold it. Tonight you don’t go inside. Not the head. Not anything. If you ask for that, the answer is no, and you still get to stay if you take the no."

"I won’t ask for that."

"You might. You’re hard already. I can see it. Don’t adjust. Listening is the first place your hands go. Nowhere."

I didn’t adjust. She let the quiet sit until she trusted it.

"Second place," she said. "If I call you over, your hands go on the bed. Either side of my legs. Not on my legs. You lean in when I say. You kiss me if I say. You stop when I say stop, even if I say it late."

"Okay."

"Third place is my waist. Over the shirt. Only if I take your wrist and put it there. You don’t commute between places on your own."

"I understand."

Evelyn nodded. Her fingers worried the hem of the shirt. The skipped button gaped when she breathed.

"Come here," she said again, smaller. "Bed. Hands where I told you."

I moved to the bed. Palms on the sheet, either side of her bare thighs, close enough to feel the heat and not touching. She looked down at the arrangement and made a sound that was not quite relief.

"Lean in."

I leaned. She met me halfway. The kiss was brief, mouth closed, then not. She tasted like water and the end of dinner. Her hand came up and held the back of my neck so I would not chase it when she pulled back.

"Stop."

I stopped. An inch of air. Her breath on my lip.

"That was a test," she said. "You passed. Don’t look proud."

"I’m not."

"You are a little." She almost smiled. "Waist. I’m putting you there."

She took my wrist and set my hand on her waist, over the shirt, the way she had promised. The fabric was warm. Under it she was warmer. I left the other hand on the bed until she took that one too and matched it, both of them at her waist, no lower.

"Stay."

"I’m staying."

She kissed me again, longer. The shirt pulled where my hands held. She made a small noise into my mouth and then broke it herself, forehead against mine.

"This is the version I can live with tonight," she said. "Kissing. Hands on the shirt. You don’t undo buttons. I might. If I do, you still don’t touch what I show you unless I move your hand. Say it back."

"I don’t undo them. I don’t touch what you show me unless you move my hand."

"Good boy." Quiet. Not the shower voice. The bedroom one, tired and sure. "Then kiss me again. Slower. I want to feel the rule hold while I want it not to."

I kissed her slower. She opened under it. Her fingers stayed in my hair. Mine stayed at her waist. The shirt rode a little from the angle and she did not fix it. Bare thigh brushed my wrist when she shifted, an accident, and I did not follow it.

She felt the not-following. Her breath caught like the accident had been a second test.

"Lucas."

"Yeah."

"I’m going to undo one button. The low one. Not the collar. You keep your eyes on my face while I do it. Then I’ll tell you if you can look."

"Okay."

She reached between us and slipped the lowest closed button free. The shirt loosened over her stomach. I looked at her face. Flushed. Mouth wet. Eyes on mine to see if I would cheat.

"You can look," she said.

I looked. A strip of stomach. The edge of the mark from my hip-grip, faded. Nothing lower. She was watching me watch, and her hands were shaking again, the kitchen evidence, back.

"That’s all the lost I’m spending," she whispered. "Come up on the bed properly. Behind me. Arms around my waist, over the shirt. We’re going to lie down like that and you are not going to get more creative than I just was. If you get hard against me, you stay still. That’s allowed. Using it isn’t."

I moved behind her. She lay on her side. I fitted in, arms around her waist, over the shirt, the open hem a warm gap against my wrist. She pulled the sheet up to her ribs. My cock rested against her ass through my clothes. She felt it and exhaled, not a flinch.

"Still," she said.

"Still."

Her hand covered mine on her stomach, the open shirt between our palms.

"If I say more," she murmured, already closing her eyes, "it means one of your hands goes under the shirt. Not lower than my ribs. If I don’t say it, this is the night. Either way, you don’t decide. I do. Even half asleep. Especially half asleep."

"I won’t decide."

She was quiet long enough that I thought the night had chosen itself.

Then her fingers tightened on mine, and she had not fallen asleep.

"More," she said, barely voice. "Under the shirt. Ribs. And ask me again before you call that permission for anything else."

I slid my hand under the hem, palm to the warm skin over her ribs, and stopped there, waiting for the next word she had not given me yet.

Her ribs rose under my palm. She did not move my hand. She also did not take the word back.

"There," Evelyn said. "That’s more. Not a tour. Stay on the ribs."

"I’m staying."

"I can feel your heart. Or mine. Don’t sort it out." She shifted back, a small fit, and the open shirt gaped where my wrist held it up. Skin to skin at the waist. Cloth everywhere else. My cock pressed her through my clothes and she let the press exist. "Still means still. If you rock, I send you to the couch. I will hate doing it. I’ll do it."

"I won’t rock."

She covered my hand again, over the shirt this time, pinning it to her ribs so I could not drift. The lamp was still on. She did not ask me to kill it. In the low light the faded mark on her neck showed when she turned her face into the pillow.

"I almost said lower," she said. "I’m telling you that so I don’t. Saying it out loud spends it. Then I don’t have to do it."

"Okay."

"Don’t okay me like you’re agreeing with the almost." A breath, almost a laugh. "Agree with the not."

"I agree with the not."

"Better."

We lay in it. The house made no other sound. Her thumb stroked once over my knuckle, the absent touch from the morning, and this time she did not stop herself. One stroke. Two. Then she held still, as if the third would become a decision.

"Lucas."

"Yeah."

"Tomorrow the shirt stays buttoned until dinner. Tonight it stays open at the hem and your hand stays where I put it. If I fall asleep, you leave it there until you slip out. You don’t explore a sleeping woman and call it obedience."

"I won’t."

"Good boy." Softer than the kitchen. She drew my hand a fraction higher, still ribs, the underside of her breast a heat I was not allowed to reach. She stopped before I reached it. "That’s the edge. Feel it and don’t take it."

I felt it. I did not take it.

Evelyn’s breath evened, then didn’t. She was awake. She was choosing to sound closer to sleep than she was.

"If I say now," she whispered, "you kiss my shoulder and nothing else. If I say nothing, you keep your mouth to yourself. I’m saying now. Once."

I kissed her shoulder through the shirt. Warm cotton. The shape of her under it. I did not move the kiss toward her neck.

She shivered anyway.

"That’s enough," she said. "Hand stays. Mouth done. Ask me in the morning if I regret the more. Not before. If I don’t answer, the answer is yes, and you still don’t move your hand tonight."

Her fingers tightened once over mine, then loosened, not quite sleep.

The edge of her breast stayed a heat against the side of my thumb, and she had not told me to leave it or to take it.
