Chapter 256: A Dispute Between Mother and Son
When the meeting was suddenly interrupted, the expressions of the Void Lords shifted drastically.
Her Majesty the Void Empress was well known for her intense dislike of having her thoughts interrupted. However, the moment they heard that the voice belonged to Qin Xian, a collective breath of relief passed through the room.
The Void Empress herself showed initial displeasure, but once she saw Qin Xian step in, her face softened into a slight smile as she nodded and said, “You’re here.”
On the return journey to the First Royal Court, Qin Xian had remained in his chambers, focused entirely on organizing the numerous abilities he had copied from various Void Lords.
These skills were vast in number, powerful in effect, and understanding their intricacies took time. Knowing this, the Void Empress had chosen not to disturb him.
So even though his sudden appearance interrupted the ongoing meeting, she felt no displeasure at all. Toward her one and only child, she would never be as harsh as she was with others.
Curious, she asked, “What do you have in mind?”
Qin Xian smiled and replied, “Mother, why don’t you let me handle the invasion of the Hydra world?”
As soon as the words left his mouth, the Void Empress frowned slightly and fell silent. She did want Qin Xian to invade and destroy a world, to complete the rite that would make him a true Void Overlord.
But her original plan had been to send him to a weak, underdeveloped world, one that could be devoured in no more than a month with the help of other Void Lords. Hydra, however, was far from weak or underdeveloped.
Even without its so-called Hero, Hydra had withstood the First Royal Court’s invasion for two hundred years, proof enough of its flourishing magical civilization. And that Hero was no ordinary defender—he had slain several Void Lords, and his combat strength rivaled that of a top-tier human powerhouse.
Although Qin Xian’s growth had been extraordinary—he could one-shot Goethe, a newly-evolved Void Lord—he was still young.
Hydra was complicated, and its Hero had been blessed by the world’s Origin, allowing him to channel the full might of the Hydra world. Sending Qin Xian there carried a sliver of risk. That tiny possibility was enough to make the Void Empress uneasy.
Vilder, the Bloodstained Marchioness who had just been reprimanded, turned pale as well. If the invasion of Hydra merely failed, at worst she would lose command of the Blood Legion or be punished with some pain. Given her status—on par with Delkru and a veteran leader of the First Royal Court—the Void Empress would not execute her lightly.
But if Qin Xian entered Hydra and something happened to him, not even someone of her rank would escape the Empress’s wrath. She would be crushed without hesitation. For her, it would be better if Qin Xian didn’t go at all.
The Void Empress shook her head and said calmly, “No. The situation in Hydra is too complex. If you want to invade a world, choose another.”
But Qin Xian’s gaze remained firm. “No, I want to go to Hydra. I’m very curious about that Hero.”
Seeing Qin Xian’s refusal, the Void Empress’s expression turned cold. “Be obedient, Qin Xian.”
She could not allow him to venture into Hydra. But to her surprise, Qin Xian shook his head and insisted, “I refuse.”
Staring at his resolute expression, a flicker of anger flashed through the Empress’s eyes.
“No one disobeys my will. Not even you!” Her voice was like frost, carrying a deadly chill that sent a shockwave through the throne hall.
But Qin Xian’s expression also darkened. He looked at his mother, unflinching, his words sharp and unwavering.
“No one controls me. No one defies me. Not even you, Mother!” His voice echoed through the grand chamber. Facing the Empress’s fury, he remained completely fearless, staring her down coldly.
Alwen, Delkru, and the other Void Lords of the First Royal Court trembled and lowered their heads, not daring to make a sound. Across endless eras, not one being had ever dared argue with the Void Empress.
Even making her slightly unhappy was usually a death sentence. And now Qin Xian had not only angered her—he openly defied her will and challenged her authority. If it had been anyone else, they would have been crushed on the spot.
But the Void Empress merely stared coldly at Qin Xian. The entire hall was engulfed in suffocating silence. No one dared to speak. Even these Void Lords—beings at the pinnacle of combat—felt like they could hardly breathe.
No one knew how much time passed before the Void Empress finally spoke again, her voice breaking the stillness.
“Then… as you wish.” Her face was unreadable as she gazed at her child.
Her eyes held concern, scrutiny, displeasure—but not anger. Although Qin Xian’s defiance had clearly made her unhappy, she still held back her temper. In fact, his unwavering will stirred a faint sense of pride in her. He was, after all, her blood.
That fierce, untamable nature—one that refused to yield to anyone—was exactly like her own.
As the Empress agreed, a smile appeared on Qin Xian’s face. “Thank you, Mother.”
