Pampering Discarded Heroines Triggers My 10,000x Rebate System
Chapter 172: Shoulder to Shoulder
Zephyra lowered the cold water bottle slowly, her throat clicking as she swallowed. A faint trace of color crept onto her pale cheeks, though she tried her best to maintain her usual icy composure.
"I don’t know what you’re talking about," Zephyra said, turning her head toward the bustling skyline of District 1. "I was observing the defensive perimeter of the lower terrace."
Amber laughed softly, leaning her forearms against the brushed stainless steel railing. "The perimeter? Zephyra, the man is leaning against the rail seventy feet down with his sleeves rolled up, and you haven’t blinked once in the past two minutes."
"He is our Chairman," Zephyra argued, her tone tightening slightly as she gripped the bottle tighter. "He pulled me out of the iron cages of Arena Nine, cleansed the lethal venom from my blood, and gave me back my daggers. Watching over his life is my sacred duty as his shadow guardian."
"Duty doesn’t make your pulse race every time he walks into the room," Amber replied gently, resting a warm hand on Zephyra’s shoulder to steady her. "And you don’t need to put up that rigid soldier defense with me, because I’m not questioning your loyalty."
Zephyra looked down at the polished stone tiles beneath her boots.
The silence between them stretched for several long moments, filled only by the distant hum of traffic rising from the imperial avenues far below.
"I have too much blood on my hands, Amber," Zephyra murmured in a quiet voice, staring down at her calloused palms.
A moment of silence passed between them before she continued.
"I spent years doing the syndicate’s dirty work... slitting throats in the dark, slipping nightshade into nobles’ wine, and ambushing high-value convoys without ever asking questions."
"When the necro-venom finally paralyzed my hands four months ago, they dumped me into an underground fighting cage to die," she added, her fingers tightening into fists. "Cold-blooded killers like me don’t get to look at someone like him and dream about normal things."
Amber shook her head, her dark brown eyes softening. "You think I didn’t feel the exact same way when he first found me? I had given up on everything and felt completely worthless, like an impossible burden."
Zephyra looked back up, meeting Amber’s gaze.
"You were forced into that syndicate to survive, Zephyra," Amber said gently, resting a hand over Zephyra’s. "Evren knew the kind of life you were dragged through when he took your contract, but he still poured millions into healing you and gave you a home."
"He doesn’t judge you for what other people forced you to do, and he never treated you like a disposable weapon," Amber continued. "He didn’t pull you out of the dark just to keep you standing in the shadows forever. He wants you to live, Zephyra, and he cares about you far more than you realize."
Zephyra bit her lower lip, her chest rising and falling in an uneven breath. "And what about you, Amber? Wouldn’t you feel resentful?"
Amber laughed warmly. "I share a soul-bond with him, Z. I can feel the warmth in his thoughts and how fiercely you protect him when danger is near. In this house, we don’t fight over scraps or harbor jealousy."
She gave Zephyra’s shoulder a gentle, sisterly squeeze before stepping back from the railing with an easy smile. Her eyes sparkled with playful affection as she crossed her arms.
"We stand together, shoulder to shoulder," Amber said. "Besides, with an Extinction-Class rift hanging over our heads, life is too short to hide what you feel. Now come on, we’re both covered in sweat, and my shoulders are burning."
Zephyra let out a slow breath she seemed to have held inside for weeks, a small, genuine smile finally softening the sharp edges of her face. "Where are we going?"
"Up to the private thermal springs on eighty," Amber answered, tossing her empty bottle into the recycling chute. "The mineral waters will ease our sore muscles before dinner, and Calista is probably already buried under stacks of plant schematics anyway."
Zephyra nodded, returning her silver training daggers to their sheaths. "A long soak in hot spring water actually sounds wonderful."
—
Down on the seventy-fourth floor, a crisp afternoon wind swept across the open tactical command terrace.
Guild Master Walter finished tracing the aerial intercept coordinates on the holographic projector before shutting down the display. He ran a weathered hand over his graying buzz cut, turning toward Evren.
"The secondary defense routes are mapped out, Chairman," Walter said. "My squad leaders are already escorting Director Mikay back from the District 2 plant, and the remaining men are hauling their gear into the garrison suites on floor seventy-six."
"Good," Evren replied, leaning against the terrace rail with calm confidence. "Tell the squad to get a hot meal and rest up this afternoon. Once the sky alarms begin to wail, nobody in this city is going to see a bed for days."
"Understood, Chairman," Walter answered with a salute.
With a firm nod, the veteran commander turned and walked toward the elevator. The doors chimed softly as he stepped inside and headed down, leaving Evren alone on the wide terrace.
Evren walked to the perimeter edge, resting his hands on the reinforced glass partition as he looked up toward the southern sky.
High above the capital, a faint, unnatural violet shimmer rippled through the clouds, marking the path of the suspended Extinction-Class rift drifting steadily toward District 1.
With a quiet thought, Evren called up his internal interface. A translucent golden window materialized in his field of vision, displaying the tracking feed that had unlocked at the conservatory:
[ACTIVE RIFT TRACKER: S-RANK ASTRAL-CHASM RIFT]
[LOCATION: DISTRICT 3 WESTERN FRONTIER - DEPTH 60]
[CONVERGENCE COUNTDOWN: 22 HOURS REMAINING]
[TARGET OBJECTIVE: LEVEL 80 STAR-DIAMOND VOID CORE (CALISTA VESPER - STAGE 3 CATALYST)]
Evren looked at the countdown with a frown. When the recipe had first generated, the timer sat at seventy-two hours, but time and natural spatial drift had dragged it down to barely twenty-two.
The real dilemma was the massive rift hanging overhead. Kincaid’s defense council estimated seventy-two hours before the sky broke, but spatial anomalies were unpredictable, and a sudden atmospheric drop could trigger the breach early.
If the sky rift cracked open while he was clearing the Astral-Chasm miles away in the western crags, District 1 would be shredded by flying monsters. He had to enter the chasm the second it opened, slaughter the Level 80 boss, secure the core, and race back before the aerial disaster began.
"Twenty-two hours," Evren muttered under his breath. He dismissed the golden screen with a blink and strode across the terrace toward the private lift.
When the brass doors parted on the eightieth floor, the warm scent of dried jasmine and medicinal herbs greeted him.
In the lounge of the Sky-Palace, Calista was seated comfortably in her magitech chair near the panoramic glass windows. Her new rose-gold tablet was propped on a low stand, displaying cleanroom schematics from the District 2 facility.
Beside her tablet lay the leather grimoire of House Vesper, its silver-inscribed pages open to an ancient extraction formula.
Calista glanced up as Evren walked in, her face instantly lighting up. "Evren, you’re back up."
"How are the facility schematics looking?" Evren asked, sitting down on the leather sofa across from her.
"Better than I hoped," Calista answered with a proud smile, tapping the screen to highlight the primary reactors. "The distillation towers use mana-sealed quartz glass, so we won’t get any metal contamination when processing Star-Jade sap. Once Mikay brings back the operational permits, we can begin operations in about a week after procuring other necessary reagents."
Evren nodded with satisfaction. "Good work. But tomorrow morning, we also have another priority."
Calista tilted her head, her silver eyes curious. "Another priority?"
"The S-Rank Astral-Chasm Rift on the western frontier opens in twenty-two hours," Evren said calmly. "I’m heading in to claim the Level 80 core for your Stage Three cure."
Calista froze, her breath catching in her throat. She set her stylus onto the table, her hands trembling slightly against her lap.
"The core?" Calista whispered, staring at him with wide eyes. "Evren, an S-Rank rift is deadly enough on its own, and with that Extinction-Class rift drifting toward the city, the entire military is scrambling. You’re going to dive into an S-Rank chasm just for my medicine?"
Evren leaned forward, reaching across the table to gently cover her hands with his own. His touch was warm and steady, instantly stilling her tremors.
"I promised you that you would walk again, Calista," Evren said with an easy smile. "A crack in the sky doesn’t change my promises. We’ll clear the chasm, take the core, and be back long before the sky rift causes trouble."
Calista looked down at his hand covering hers, an overwhelming warmth flooding her chest. In a city where everyone had treated her like a discarded burden, here was a man ready to storm an S-Rank rift just to give her back her legs.
Tears welled in the corners of her eyes, but a breathtaking smile broke across her face.
A quiet chime rang in Evren’s mind as the System registered her surging emotion:
[HEROINE #3 DEVOTION ADVANCEMENT: CALISTA VESPER]
[CURRENT DEVOTION: 75% -> REVERENCE & UNCONDITIONAL TRUST]
[HOUSEHOLD HARMONY REINFORCED: COMBAT STAT RESONANCE INCREASED BY 25%]
[REWARD UNLOCKED: 1x S-RANK FORTUNE WHEEL SPIN!]
