Our Anniversary, You Chose Her – I Chose Divorce
Chapter 838: Who Is Stopping Her?
A bullet hole had appeared in the stone slab, directly in her path. It was perfectly centered, right where she was about to step. This wasn’t a missed sneak attack. Someone had deliberately fired ahead of her to stop her from turning back. Someone was trying to keep her away.
Chloe Reed tightened her grip on her gun. She turned to face the pitch-black darkness. "Who’s there?"
She thought of the person who had helped her earlier. Was it them? Someone hiding in the shadows, never showing their face, only striking at critical moments. Just who was this person?
She stood there for a long time, but no one appeared. The unseen shooter didn’t utter a single word, leaving her to wonder if she was just dreaming or hallucinating. But when she looked ahead again, the bullet hole in the stone path was startlingly clear. It wasn’t an illusion.
A heavy solemnity filled Chloe’s eyes.
Did this person fire the shot because they didn’t want her going back to die? But if she left, what would happen to Walker Grant? Those mercenaries were ruthless, and they worked for Vera Holloway. Could Walker really stand against the Holloway Family? She didn’t know, nor did she dare to gamble on it.
Thinking back on everything that had happened along the way, she realized he had always been the one standing in front to protect her. When it came down to it, she owed him a great deal. She just couldn’t get past the hurdle in her heart to calmly walk by his side again.
Right now, it seemed this was the only way she could repay him. This worked, too. At the very least, they would be even.
Chloe raised her eyes, her gaze growing increasingly determined, and stepped forward once more. This time, the person in the shadows didn’t fire another warning shot, as if they already understood her decision.
She felt a twinge of regret that this mystery helper refused to show themselves; she had no way to properly thank them. Moving swiftly toward the mixing room, her mind raced to figure out her next steps.
Inside the cold storage room.
When the booming broadcast echoed through the facility, Fiona Linton and the bodyguard’s faces instantly fell.
"What a mess! Why would Walker Grant show up at a time like this?!" Fiona paced around anxiously, desperately trying to think of a countermeasure.
The bodyguard, meanwhile, was struggling to establish contact with his comrades, but the signal remained painfully choppy.
Fiona glanced outside and said, "All those guys have been drawn to the mixing room, and Walker is in their hands. Chloe will definitely go over there. It’s probably clear on this side, so we need to find an exit and leave immediately."
Unable to reach his team, the bodyguard had to temporarily give up. Hearing her words, he nodded in agreement.
Fiona continued, "This is a cold storage room. There should be specialized transport vehicles parked nearby. If we can find one, we’re saved!"
The bodyguard’s eyes lit up. "Why didn’t I think of that? Doctor Linton, you’re brilliant!"
Fiona looked exasperated. "Stop dawdling and start searching!"
They slipped out of the cold storage and carefully scoured the surrounding area. Just as Fiona had predicted, the mercenaries’ attention was entirely focused on the mixing room, leaving this section practically deserted.
Soon, the bodyguard found a garage diagonally behind the cold storage room. Inside sat two large trucks and a small pickup. All of them were clearly used for transporting ingredients and cargo.
"Quick, check if they’ve been tampered with!" Fiona ran over, her eyes shining with hope.
A wave of regret suddenly washed over her. She should have insisted on dragging Chloe along earlier. If she had, they could all be escaping this hellhole together!
