Li Xiufang raised her head, looking into Yang Xun’s earnest eyes. Her lips trembled for a long while before she asked in a quivering voice, "Are... are you telling the truth?"

"Why would I lie to you?" Yang Xun’s tone remained calm. "As his wife, even if you don’t know exactly what he did, you should have noticed that something was wrong."

She abruptly stood up, her eyes instantly turning red. Her voice choked with sobs. "He... he sent me a message saying he would take me away from here, but he had to get the money first."

"Get the money from where?"

"He didn’t say, but I’m guessing... it has to do with someone named Jin," Li Xiufang said, her voice shaking as tears welled up and spilled over. "He never tells me anything, but once he was talking in his sleep. He called the other person Young Master Jin, and said the job was done."

"Do you know when they are supposed to make the trade?" Yang Xun asked.

"I don’t know," Li Xiufang cried, shaking her head.

"Then ask him right now. I know you can contact him." Yang Xun’s gaze was filled with a coercive pressure. Li Xiufang didn’t dare to disobey; she was terrified that he was right and her husband would be silenced.

She hurriedly picked up her phone, swapped in a different SIM card, and sent a message to Chen Dinglai. However, there was no response for a long time.

A while later, Chen Mingli arrived with his men, and they all waited anxiously for a reply.

"Captain Chen, check how many Jin families there are in Shunping City. They should have quite a few properties under their name—rich and powerful."

"The Jin family?" Chen Mingli froze for a moment before saying, "If you’re talking about the Jin family, it’s definitely that one.

"I was just about to tell you. We just found out that the deceased’s family filed a police report two years ago. Wu Xiaoyu called the police saying she was assaulted, and the perpetrator was Jin Shilong."

Yang Xun nodded. Now that all the clues were connected, the truth was clear. The only problem was that Chen Dinglai was missing. They had sent some men out to search for him, but turned up empty-handed.

The sky gradually darkened. Suddenly, a phone chimed, and everyone craned their necks to look.

"I’m at the abandoned brick factory in the west of the city. Bring the things we packed earlier and come find me now. Once I get the money, we’re leaving immediately."

"Okay!" Li Xiufang replied with a single word. Her face was full of pleading. "Hurry and go save Dinglai! Those people definitely won’t let him off!"

"Captain Chen, send someone to protect Li Xiufang. We’re moving out!" Yang Xun stood up and walked briskly outside.

Everyone couldn’t help but stare in surprise. Yang Xun was merely assisting in the investigation, yet his imposing manner allowed him to command Chen Mingli—and strangely enough, Captain Chen didn’t seem to mind at all.

They got into their vehicles and immediately rushed toward the abandoned brick factory in the west of the city.

As evening fell, the streetlights in the western district flickered on sparsely. The abandoned brick factory sat at the end of a dirt road, surrounded by barren farmland and weed-choked lots. There wasn’t a single decent building in sight.

An inconspicuous van slowly drove up and stopped at the entrance of the brick factory. The doors opened, and several burly men stepped out. The leader was a bald, tattooed man nicknamed Gusan.

Gusan glanced inside, his voice laced with impatience. "Where’s Chen Dinglai? Is he still not here?

"Damn it! He’s not even eager to get his money. If he doesn’t come out, we’re leaving!"

As soon as he spoke, the sound of footsteps echoed from inside the factory. A gaunt man emerged from the shadows. He wore a slightly dirty jacket, and his face bore a mix of nervousness and fawning subservience.

"Third Master, how come you’re delivering the money yourself?"

Gusan sneered, his eyes growing increasingly fierce. "The money is in the van. Come with me to get it."

Chen Dinglai nodded eagerly. "Alright, I’ll take the money and leave. I absolutely won’t show my face ever again."

He had barely taken two steps forward when a cold gleam suddenly flashed before his eyes. He instinctively stumbled back a few steps. The blade slashed across his arm, immediately opening a gash as blood spurted out.

"What are you doing?!"

"Young Master Jin gave the order for me to get rid of you. Don’t bother struggling."

"I had an agreement with Young Master Jin! I was supposed to take the money and leave! He actually wants to silence me for good?!"

Gusan spat on the ground, his face full of mockery.

"Chen Dinglai, you’re a complete idiot. You should’ve kept a low profile after taking that million.

"That dumbass father-in-law of yours was telling anyone who would listen that you struck it rich. It’s like you were afraid people wouldn’t know you were doing shady business!"

Chen Dinglai’s face instantly turned ghastly pale. He opened his mouth but couldn’t utter a single word.

"Third Master, I know I messed up! Please help me beg Young Master Jin for mercy!" he abruptly started pleading, his voice trembling. "I’ll take the money and leave Shunping City with my wife! I’ll never come back! Please let me go!"

"Too late." Gusan straightened up and shot a look at the thugs behind him. "Finish him. Keep it clean."

The men nodded and drew gleaming daggers from their waists, advancing on him step by step. Looking at the cold blades reflecting the moonlight, Chen Dinglai felt as though he had been plunged into an ice cellar. He turned around and ran.

But retreating deeper into the brick factory only led to a dead end. Soon, Chen Dinglai was completely surrounded.

Fortunately, he had brought a knife with him. Swinging it wildly at the men in front of him, he actually managed to slash two of them.

"Chen Dinglai, I’m guessing your wife is on her way here. She might be a bit older, but she doesn’t look half bad," one of the thugs taunted. "If you keep resisting, we’ll catch her later, have our fun with her, and then kill her."

Hearing this, Chen Dinglai’s blood ran cold from head to toe. He had done many terrible things, but he truly loved his wife. Back then, he had been so desperately poor that in order to marry Li Xiufang, he had no choice but to get mixed up in this dirty business. Now, there was no turning back.

"If you f*cking dare touch Xiufang, I’ll make your whole family pay with their lives!"

Gusan snorted disdainfully. "Haha! You’re about to die. What, are you going to turn into a ghost and kill me?

"You think I care about touching your sloppy seconds? As long as you die, I’ll let her go."

Chen Dinglai gritted his teeth. He couldn’t give up. Only by escaping with the money could he give Xiufang a good life. But in the end, he was only one man. Surrounded by these thugs, he was hacked several times, blood flowing uncontrollably from his wounds.

Just then, lights flared in the distance as a fleet of police cruisers sped toward them.

"Boss, the cops are here!"

Gusan’s face changed drastically. He rapidly stabbed Chen Dinglai in his vital spots a few times to ensure he was dead, then turned and fled into the van to escape.

Chen Mingli led over a dozen police officers, flanking from all directions and completely locking down the brick factory. However, Gusan and his men had already vanished without a trace.

Seeing the man lying in a pool of blood, Yang Xun quickly rushed over to stop the bleeding, immediately channeling True Qi into his body to keep him hanging onto life.

With no time left to pursue the suspects, Chen Mingli hurriedly drove Chen Dinglai to the hospital. The moment the police car parked at the hospital entrance, medical staff rushed forward and wheeled the man into the emergency room.

"Mr. Yang, do you think he can survive this?" Chen Mingli asked, looking a bit crestfallen. They had finally found their man. If Chen Dinglai died, Jin Shilong would undoubtedly get away scot-free.
