Chapter 87: Jiang Yang Encounters a Supernatural Event
Jiang Yang followed the crowd into the subway station, preparing to catch a train back to the Apartment.
Right then, a call came through on his mobile phone.
The caller was Wang Wenbo.
Jiang Yang had some impression of the man. He was an ordinary resident of the Living Apartment who had completed two tasks. His only memorable trait was that he had graduated with a computer science degree from a prestigious university in Shanghai before being hired by a major tech firm.
Unlike normal residents, this guy actually insisted on keeping his day job after entering the Living Apartment. Even when executing Green Text Missions, he would ask his boss for time off in advance. He was meticulous to a bizarre degree.
Following Gao Tian's arrival, he had discussed his need for a programmer to unlock some posts related to the Apartment, and Xia Ta had recommended Wang Wenbo for the job.
Later, after the fourth-floor exploration team's mission, Xia Ta returned to her hometown. Before leaving, she made sure to leave Jiang Yang a message: once Wang Wenbo finished his current major project and went on annual leave, Jiang Yang should put him in touch with Gao Tian.
Unexpectedly, the workaholic Wang Wenbo had actually taken the initiative to contact him. This was a rare occurrence.
Jiang Yang answered the mobile phone. "This is Jiang Yang. What's going on for you to contact me so suddenly?"
On the other end of the mobile phone, Wang Wenbo's anxious but hesitant voice spoke up. "Brother Jiang Yang... are you guys free right now?"I'm currently at work as usual at Jinhai Building. But some strange supernatural phenomena have suddenly appeared in our building. I'm not sure if it's dangerous yet, but it has already disrupted our normal routine.
"Calling the police was useless. I thought of you right away. Can you come over and help deal with it?"
Even though Jiang Yang was several years younger, Wang Wenbo still called him 'Brother.' His tone carried a pleading edge, full of ingratiation.
The situation at Jinhai Building was probably much more serious than he was letting on.
Jiang Yang stopped in his tracks on the platform. If he was going to Jinhai Building, he would definitely have to change his route. "Don't panic. Protect yourself and stay as far away from the source of the supernatural phenomenon as possible.
"Tell me exactly what happened. I'll check the time and try my best to rush over."
Wang Wenbo was the 'high-level talent' Gao Tian needed. If Jiang Yang could help him, he would do his best to do so.
Strangely, Wang Wenbo's voice became increasingly muffled and slurred. "This situation... is rather difficult to describe in words. It would be best if you came to take a look yourself.
"Of course, if you're too busy right now and can't get away, then forget it. After all, this thing—it hasn't caused any casualties so far. Just an older security guard went missing, his fate unknown.
"But it's still impacting our department's project progress today. It would be best to resolve it as soon as possible, though of course, your schedule takes priority—"
It was apparent that he was extremely anxious, carefully weighing every word he spoke.
Having gained no useful information, Jiang Yang had wanted to press for more details, but Wang Wenbo suddenly hung up for no apparent reason.
When he tried calling back, he was only met with the busy tone of 'The number you have dialed is currently on another call.'
"How baffling."
Jiang Yang felt somewhat annoyed by Wang Wenbo's abrupt and contextless mobile phone call.
However, Wang Wenbo truly seemed to have some unspeakable difficulties, and Jiang Yang couldn't just leave him to die. He began checking the station's route map to see if he could take the subway over to Jinhai Building.
If there were no direct subway transfers available, he would have to take a taxi. Of course, he would absolutely make that guy reimburse him for the fare.
Right as he was studying the route and calculating what time he could arrive at Jinhai Building, something cold and icy dripped onto his face, drop by drop.
Was it raining?
That was Jiang Yang's first reaction.
Then, he chuckled in spite of himself.
This was an underground subway platform; where would rain come from?
It was probably just some water leaking from an air conditioning line above.
Jiang Yang instinctively reached out and wiped the liquid from his forehead. When he saw his palm smeared with crimson blood, the smile completely vanished from his face.
Drops of red blood fell one by one from the ceiling of the underground platform—over twenty meters below the surface—coming down just like rain.
Was it raining in the subway station?
Was it a rain of blood?
At the same time, the other passengers waiting for the train also realized something was wrong. Some desperately tried to find cover to avoid being stained by the blood; some screamed, asking if it was a supernatural event; the smart ones ran for the escalators, attempting to flee the platform where the blood rain had begun to fall.
In the distance, deep within the tunnel.
The pattering rain of blood had already dyed the subway tracks red.
A strange woman holding a white umbrella was slowly walking out from the tunnel meant for the subway trains.
She allowed the bright red blood to fall freely onto her umbrella. Its massive canopy perfectly obscured the upper half of her face, revealing only a pair of bright red lips.
The people who had initially tried to leave the subway station were slowly forced to turn back.
It was unknown what they had encountered at the top of the escalators, but judging by their expressions of sheer disbelief, the entire platform was temporarily sealed off, making escape impossible.
A few people who weren't afraid of death actively approached the glass screen doors separating the tunnel from the platform. They pulled out their mobile phones and started recording the mysterious, tall woman emerging from the depths of the tunnel.
"What is this? A new variety show?"
"Are you a caveman who doesn't watch the news? This is a supernatural event! A supernatural event, you idiot! We're in serious danger right now."
"Should we call the police? Can anyone even get down here?"
Jiang Yang slowly lowered his mobile phone, watching as the eerie woman in the tunnel walked through the endless rain of blood, drawing closer and closer to the audience on the platform.
He softly cursed under his breath.
It seemed he had unwittingly been dragged into a supernatural event—a wild supernatural mission completely unrelated to the Living Apartment's Green Text Missions.
Jiang Yang didn't think this supernatural event was capable of killing him.
The worst-case scenario was that he would waste a Black Card here to teleport directly back to the Living Apartment.
However, with this interruption, he temporarily couldn't make it over to Jinhai Building.
While observing the umbrella-holding woman walking out of the tunnel, Jiang Yang ran in the opposite direction of the crowd, attempting to put some distance between himself and her. At the same time, he pulled out his mobile phone and dialed Gao Tian's number.
Gao Tian should be at the Living Apartment right now. Based on Jiang Yang's observations, ever since coming down from the fifth floor, Gao Tian had completely turned into a shut-in, not stepping foot outside for quite some time.
He seemed to recall Xia Ta mentioning that it had something to do with a prophecy Yusheng made before leaving. He had said Gao Tian would face a bloody disaster next, so Gao Tian simply chose not to go out at all.
In any case, Jiang Yang had never believed in such feudal superstitions. Previously, there had also been a neurotic fortune-teller in the Apartment who claimed Jiang Yang would die during his fifth Green Text Mission.
As a result, that fortune-teller died on his very first mission.
Meanwhile, Jiang Yang survived his fifth mission at Pagoda Primary School, albeit at the cost of his fiancée's life.
Gao Tian's mobile phone connected in less than a second. The connection was so fast that Jiang Yang realized Gao Tian had very likely been just about to call him as well.
Not giving Gao Tian any chance to react, he roughly explained the current situation, then sent over the address of Jinhai Building and Wang Wenbo's mobile phone number. He hoped Gao Tian could take his place and make a trip to Jinhai Building to check out the situation.
Gao Tian would have to seek out Wang Wenbo sooner or later anyway. There was no time like the present. It was the perfect opportunity for him to deal with the anomaly at Jinhai Building and conveniently have Wang Wenbo help him recover the links he needed.
After listening to Jiang Yang's account, Gao Tian was noticeably silent on the mobile phone for a long moment. "Brother Yang, why do I feel like the situation on your end is far more dangerous?
"This situation you're describing... sounds very much like a supernatural event known as the Woman in the Rain.
"The danger level of this event is actually quite high. At first, I suspected it was just fabricated by some unemployed writers, but I never expected you to run into the real thing."
Jiang Yang had previously heard some fragments about the Woman in the Rain, but he had never paid much attention to it. He promptly asked about it, and Gao Tian didn't hold anything back. As quickly as possible, he recounted the experiences of the online victims and the patterns of the Woman in the Rain's appearances.
Jiang Yang glanced at the tunnel opposite him once more. The Woman in the Rain was still strolling along the tracks, showing no immediate intention of climbing up to the platform.
"Based on your description, this Fierce Ghost prioritizes taking away those who watch its video recordings, right?
"Her sudden arrival here should be to take away a specific victim. Her threat level to everyone else isn't actually that high.
"For now, I'm also observing how she kills. In the worst-case scenario, I'll just waste a Black Card and return directly to the Apartment."
Beep, beep, beep.
Jiang Yang hung up the mobile phone.
It seemed some unexpected turn of events had occurred over at the subway.
Gao Tian lay on the bed in his room.
Now, this Leather Ball had been kicked over to him.
Xia Ta was absent, Zhao Zhenjia was away, and Jiang Yang was tangled up with the Woman in the Rain. Right now, in the Apartment, the only person left who could go to Jinhai Building and help Wang Wenbo handle the situation was himself.
But once he left the Apartment, wouldn't the fatal tribulation prophesied by Yusheng also be fulfilled right on cue?
Could it even be that the supernatural event Wang Wenbo had been stammering about was prepared specifically to kill him?
If he didn't go, he'd be taking the other choice: continuing to turtle up in the Living Apartment and pretending nothing had ever happened?
—
On the other hand, Yusheng had never claimed that staying in the Apartment was guaranteed to be safe.
So, there was only one very simple method left to determine his next course of action.
