On Astral Tides: From Humble Freelancer To Astral Emperor
Seven Hundred And Twenty-Three
After the tense argument, my sis and Eri persuaded me to leave, taking Tsukiko with me. I didn’t want to, the atmosphere was still awful, with mom in particular having an expression on her face which could have been in the dictionary next to ‘her world has come crashing down’ but a rapid mental conversation persuaded me, with my sis forcefully explaining it was her problem to sort out anyway, and Eri adding that it might be easier without me there.
They’d promised to meet me later on tonight, Eri cheekily insisting she wanted that game of mini golf I’d promised, and so the pair of us left, but not before I’d taken one last searching glance at my father. He was clearly very upset, yes, but he’d kept his temper far better than I’d expected, perhaps due to needing to reassure mom. Of course, I didn’t need to check out Eri’s parents. Uncle Junpei seemed resigned but accepting, while Hana was trying to put on a solemn, soothing expression, but I could see her underlying satisfaction. Just like you said, Eri. Your mom’s certainly got a petty side…
“Sorry about you having to help out, Tsukiko…” I apologised as we walked to the other side of the bar, where a number of Adamant were hanging out, mostly idols, by the looks of it. “…it can’t have been pleasant.”
Tsukiko shook her head slowly. “It was manageable. And I am happy to help out wherever I can. After all, as your fiancée, it is only natural. And moreover, as Aiko’s friend, and sister. I confess, the taboo nature of the deed does not dismay me as it does ordinary people, perhaps because of Divine Tsukuyomi and Divine Amaterasu, as I stated. Or because I was raised outside of temporal schooling, and so I did not absorb the taboos and social norms of the times. Whatever the reason… I support whatever course makes you both happy.”
“Thanks, Tsukiko.” I took her hand, pulling her close, and while her face flushed faintly, she didn’t resist, out shoulders touching, as we entered where the band was singing. The locals were staring more at the Adamant idols than the band though, as they’d noticed, the vocalist smiling ruefully as he sang.
“Oh, it’s Akio-kun!” Tamami-chan, the lead singer of Red and White, raised a hand. Beside her, Tsubame-chan and Kanako-chan were here too, in their military-themed but idol variant uniforms, as well as a half-dozen of the AKB idols I didn’t know that well. Makes sense, as there are forty-eight of them! Or so goes the joke, but when we count reserves and the like, it’s actually closer to seventy. Suzu is even talking about dragging in their sister groups for more manpower, but I think she just wants to create an idol army. I can’t say I don’t get the appeal though.
As the others offered their greetings, one of the locals gathered the courage to speak up. She was probably in her early twenties, a fashionable young woman, and she approached me cautiously. “Excuse me… you’re… the Hero of Britain, Akio Oshiro, yes?”
I nodded. “That I am. So, what can I do for you?”
“Uh, I wondered… just what’s going on?” She pointed at the idols, earning a wry smile from them. “They seem familiar, but…”
“Actually, they’re Japanese idols, singers. Maybe you saw the charity concert?”
“Oh! So that’s it!” she clapped her hands, understanding. “Hey, are you filming here?”
“Not exactly…” I chuckled, and after giving her my autograph, the idols doing likewise, several other patrons trying their luck since the first woman wasn’t refused, we stood in one corner, watching. There were a couple of noble daughters from the Three Hundred here too, so it was quite lively, and as we chatted, I frowned. Nope, nobody here has any aptitude for the Favours I hold. I mean, it’s not surprising, such affinity is rare, but with my Chirurgery and our knowledge, the candidate pool has massively expanded. I definitely need to hand out some, even with Hyacinth’s help, we’re wasting a lot of adherence… luckily I reckon I can shift at least three, maybe four, over the next couple of days. Perhaps I’ll get lucky and find some unexpectedly suitable hosts too…
“What’s up, Akio-kun?” Kanako-chan asked cheerily. She was definitely the energetic one of the trio, though as idols, none of them were shy or reserved. “Why the long face?”
“He has had a rough day…” Tsukiko chuckled ruefully. “…but I suspect it is not that.”
“Yeah. I’m just sorry I can’t give any of you a gift for your hard work today. The idol corps did their duty well.” I agreed.
“Of course we did. Supporting Miyu-chan and Keiko-chan is an honour!” Tsubame-chan insisted. “Besides, our role was easier than those at the front, like these here.” She gently pushed the back of one of the girls from the nobility, who gazed at me with teary eyes, flushing. She’s a relatively new recruit. After the tragedy at Hanafubuki, isn’t she? What was her name again…?
“Taniguchi Ene…” Tsukiko whispered almost inaudibly, for me to hear. Ah, yes, I remember now. Her family is in logistics and international freight, quite a large player in the Asian markets…
“You did well too, Ene-san… uh… Ene-chan?” I changed how I was addressing her, as she was certainly on the younger side of the Adamant recruits, maybe the same age as the twins or Mizuki-chan. Even so, nobody had run, everyone had stood. Hinata’s been liaising with Motoko’s grandfather Katsuro-san to implement how the military builds morale and camaraderie. Combined with cult-style… damn, I hate thinking of it that way, but it’s kind of true… loyalty to their fellows, and ultimately to me… no wonder nobody breaks ranks.
“Don’t frown so…” Tamami-chan sighed. “I know she’s young, but Ene-chan, and all of those like her, didn’t flinch. It’s amazing that an ordinary university student and idol like me could talk of such, but… here we are. It’s a crazy world.”
I had to nod at that. “So, you didn’t get hurt then, Ene-chan?” I asked, and she shook her head.
“No, but Z-chan did. It was bad, but…” She gently pushed the back of an older girl, who had the sort of hime-cut Motoko sported. “…well, you can talk, Z-chan. Oh, she’s shy meeting you face to face like this…”
Shy? You were practically crying with nerves. Damn, that’s one unwelcome part of fame.
“Z-chan, huh? Quite the nickname. So, you’ve been Healed properly, I trust?”
“I… don’t like my name. Zuiya is just so… so masculine! I think father wanted a son… oh…” She blushed, putting her hands over her mouth, mortified. “Do excuse me, Akio-sama, I’m talking nonsense…”
“No, you can talk to me as you would any older man.” I insisted, and indeed, her clumsy shyness had lightened the mood. Zuiya, hmm? I think… she’s from the Yotsuba group. They’re into biotech and agriscience, I believe? Hinata really is snatching everyone up…
“Well, Z-chan…” I checked her with my Eyes, and indeed, she’d been Healed, but there were still lingering traces where it could have been better, so I reached out, and before I put my hand on her head, I asked permission to touch her. She stammered an affirmative, and soon, warm ether flooded her, completely repairing the last internal injuries. Patting her head, I chuckled. “…I don’t know about manly, but there are plenty of men who wouldn’t have stood firm in the face of what you did. Those sea beasts were fierce, Zuiya-chan. Anyway, you did well. I’ll remember you. You too, Ene-chan.”
As they flushed and bowed, stammering their thanks, Kanako-chan pounded me on the back playfully. “You’re a real lady-killer, Akio-kun. You quite stopped their hearts.”
“It must be rough…” Tamami-chan was commiserating with Tsukiko, who demurred politely.
“I feel it only natural. Akio is not merely a man, but an ideal now. One could almost say a Kami, though he currently lacks the spark.”
“A God, huh? Well, his powers sure are magical…” Kanako-chan agreed, and Tsubame-chan nodded.
“Let’s change the subject.” I was mortified by being spoken of as such, even if it was part of our plans. It doesn’t mean I have to be comfortable with it though. Being worshipped… it’s rough. But… I understood the need, and saw the benefits, as Adamant had performed wonderfully in their first true engagement, motivated in no small part by their instilled, fervent devotion to me and my fiancées who commanded them. “…have you learned anything valuable about your next direction of training from the battles?”
“Oh, have I ever!” Kanako-chan giggled. “I definitely need to work on my stamina. I thought being an idol was rough, but dancing as long as Miyu-chan does…”
As we chatted, the mood now light, I offered a few pointers to them, enjoyed a couple more glasses of whiskey, and then decided to leave, as there were many other groups about the town, and I wanted to praise as many as possible. As Tsukiko and I left, I listened in on Eri’s and Aiko’s thoughts.
“…think how you’ll feel in the future!” Mom was saying, her tone a little shrill. “It seems fine to you now, but when you grow out of your infatuation, you’ll hate yourself. You’ll look back in disgust…”
“Your mother is a touch distressed, but she is not mistaken, you must admit that.” my father added. “We can hardly stop you, you have both proved that today, but… haste is foolish.”
Yes. They’ve given up telling us what to do, bro, but they’re still at the persuasion. I… don’t mind, you know? Wow, really, it’s just because they care.
“I get it.” my sis agreed. “But you misunderstand me, mom, and what my bro means to me, to all of us. Wow, I’m hurt at your lack of faith that I can be faithful… but let’s just say, for argument’s sake, me and my bro do go our separate ways, in that regard…” Wow, I still hate talking about this with mom and dad. But… it’s in the open.
Yes. Besides… Eri agreed. …if they can give genuine arguments that don’t just boil down to ‘it’s immoral, it’s sick’ then we’ll listen. We surely won’t agree, but… we’re not petulant children, despite what they may think.
Wow, Eri! You make even praise sound scathing… my sis giggled mentally.
“…I don’t think I’d regret it any more than I would if an ordinary first love didn’t work out. I guess… I see myself as a girl first, rather than a sister. Like Eri. Wow, seems crazy to say, considering how much I adore being a sister, but… it’s a Connection, not a chain. It’s a fair point though, mom, dad, just… it really doesn’t mean much to me. I’d regret it more getting drunk at a uni mixer and having my first time with some drunken guy I barely know… at least here, I can trust bro to be… wow, look, nothing’s set in stone. So long as we’re happy… and mom, dad, you will eventually understand…”
I tuned out the noise. Eri and Aiko were handling it as well as could be expected, and I knew, when I placed Aiko’s happiness above common sense, that it would be a long, bitter process to win acceptance from those who mattered. But it’s a process which we’ll go through. For as long as it takes.
“Oh, look, there’s Motoko. Looks like she has some hangers-on.” Indeed, we spotted Motoko going into an establishment on the corner of the old town area, and she was being followed by Watari Megumi-chan, as well as Kanami-chan, Sakura-chan and Sayuri-chan. No Ishizaki Wakana-chan? Oh well, mixing it up is encouraged, to build stronger camaraderie.
“Shall we go in?” I asked Tsukiko, and she agreed.
“Why not? It hardly matters where I am, so long we are together. And… the more the merrier… yes?” She switched to English for that idiom.
“Yes, fortunately, otherwise I’d be in deep trouble.”
Tsukiko chuckled at my self-deprecating remark, and as we entered, we could see that this larger pub was full of smaller groups of Adamant, and even a couple of the Knights. The locals were quite outnumbered, and I had the feeling there would be a lot of interesting posts on social media about this. Juist wait until they realise Liz, Ellie and Yukiko are here too…
“Didn’t I do well, Motoko-sama? Aren’t you proud of me? Won’t you pat my head?” Megumi-chan was saying, braids swinging as she moved her head restlessly. Motoko merely seemed exasperated, but as she detected me entering, a smile, rather long-suffering, I felt, crossed her face.
“You wish a head pat, yes?”
“Oh, I do, Motoko-sama, I yearn for it!” Megumi-chan insisted. Motoko’s brown eyes flickered to mine, and she nodded slightly.
“I see, then…” Motoko trailed off, as Megumi-chan yelped, as I put my hand down on her head.
“Good girl. You did well today!” I praised her, whispering into her ear, and she went as red as a ripe tomato, while Kanami-chan giggled.
“You brought that on yourself, Megumi-chan!” Kanami-chan added when she brought her laughter under control, eyeing the crimson-faced girl. “I know you admire Motoko-sama…” Motoko coughed, and Kanami-chan was the one flushing now. “…admire Motoko-san… deeply, but she finds it a bother. Besides, Motoko-san…”
“I have eyes but for Akio, yes.” she agreed. “But I do find your efforts… in battle… praiseworthy, Watari-san.”
“Please, call me Megumi, at least do that!”
At her entreaty, Motoko’s smile changed. “Very well, Megumi-san. We are fellow warriors, and you have begun your instruction in the Tsumura Style. Excess formality is unneeded.”
“Great!” she enthused, like an overeager puppy. Then her brown eyes narrowed, and she glomped onto me, rubbing her head against my hand. “Akio-sama, I apologise! You can touch me all you like. Take me to bed! Just bring Motoko-sama too!”
Uh… I certainly could have avoided her throwing herself at me, but it seemed a mistake, especially… all right then. “You know, Megumi…” I didn’t even use an honorific, and her blush returned. Tsukiko rolled her ruby eyes beside me, knowing I was pulling a prank. I guess it’s my Fae nature? Or maybe just that Megumi-chan is so comically fun to bully? Like someone else I see in the corner…
Indeed, Mizuki-chan was with a small group, including Eui and Kana. She was standing a little hunched over, so as not to draw attention, and I inwardly tutted. I thought she’d got over that. Or is it only that she knows I have no ill-intentions, so she’s fine with me? Oh well, she’s a funny girl…
“…yes, Akio-sama?” Megumi-chan started rubbing her face against my chest, sniffing in a rather embarrassing fashion. Compared to all the other well-behaved girls from Hanafubuki, I suppose we had to have one oddball, I guess…
“…I do think you deserve a reward.”
“I do! Definitely! It’ll be a reward for you, too! But… can my first kiss be with Motoko-sama? I would prefer that! Afterwards you can do as you please!”
Motoko shook her head, exasperated.
“No, I’m afraid not.” I denied her, and she flushed, before opening her mouth, a wet sigh leaking out.
“I know all men are wolves, our teachers said so. Very well, I’m prepared, Akio-sama! Eat me up, then Motoko-sama and I shall serve you side by side, and get a little, no, a lot…” I bonked her gently on the head and she glowered at me accusingly.
“Sorry, but I’m a jealous guy. I’m not sharing Motoko. And while you’re certainly fun, I’m not the big bad wolf to eat you up. No, it’s just… here.” I pulled out one of a number of test items I’d been making in my limited spare time, trying to hone my crafting skills. I placed the bracelet of Akionite and Adherent metal, studded with small Etherite shards, carved to pretty, faceted shapes, into her hand. She blinked at it, then spoke words which would have made me spit out my drink, had I one.
“A ring is more traditional, Akio-sama! I knew you were just shy!”
“Uh… this isn’t a courting gift.” I grimaced. “It’s a bracelet which you’ll need to learn how to use. No, first you’ll need darkness element, but when you get it, channel it inside… you know what, I’ll let you find out for yourself.”
“Leave it to me, Akio-kun!” Kanami-chan promised, dragging Megumi-chan off me. “We’ll go find Wakana-chan and stop bothering you and Motoko-san!”
As she hauled the protesting Megumi-chan away, the difference in stats overwhelming, likely due to Lovers’ Link, Motoko shook her head, her smile now fondly amused.
“I am not one to be interested in a dalliance with others, but she is certainly earnest. And if I am being honest, she has, despite what her appearance would suggest, a significant aptitude for both Tsumura Style, and Cultivation, so Daiyu tells me. Her eagerness is an asset too. In the future, should she control her proclivities, she is sure to make Brilliant.” Motoko then paused. “Of course, should you wish to take us to bed…”
“No, I’m good.” I chuckled, waving that off. “Miyu and Michiru are enough for…” I trailed off. “Sorry, Sakura, Sayuri-chan. That was rude of me.”
Sakura, as refined as ever, shook her head politely. “Oh, I understand. If anything, I am relieved that Miyu-san can finally be true to her own heart. It is… not easy for us. You will be marrying her as well, yes?” At her pointed question, I nodded.
“Too late to do anything else now. Not that I like the way that sounds. I’m not doing it out of obligation, Miyu’s a wonderful woman, and Michiru…” I chuckled. “Saying, ‘well, she’s Michiru’ does her a disservice, and at the same time, does help us understand. She’s… like an overeager puppy, but her loyalty and dedication to her desires is impressive.” She’s cute too, like a pristine Japanese doll, even if she doesn’t act like she looks. And she’s certainly… voracious…
“Yes, it would not be fair to separate Michiru from Miyu. No more than it was to cast aside Natsumi.” Motoko added, before adding a little more context. “Not that Natsumi and I have that sort of relationship, I hasten to add. Yet…” Motoko glanced at the door out of which Kanami-chan had dragged out Megumi-chan. “…it seems it is more common than one would think.”
“Yes, I suppose it is only natural.” Sakura agreed. “Though I hasten to add Sayuri is just a friend to me.”
“That’s right!” she agreed. “Sakura-sama is my precious master, I would never think of more. Besides…” She shook her head, her delicate features solemn. “…my orientation is ordinary, I assure you.”
Nodding at that, I asked Sakura how she’d found the battle, and if she’d made up her mind on how to proceed.
“It was… educational.” Sakura sighed at last after some contemplation. “I have seen blood, death and terror before, of course, and it was more frightening than this. But…” She pursed her lips, eyes suddenly hard. “…you did worry Hinata for a moment, despite what she would claim. Please avoid doing that in future, if you can.”
As I nodded, she shrugged, an elegant, almost dance-like gesture. “As for my future, I have no grand hopes of reclaiming Takatsukasa house, nor does my brother Minoru-kun. He is content playing at being a hero. I am pleased you left him out of this strife.”
“Of course. Just like I had Arisa-san in the guarding squad. Give him a few years first.” I agreed. “Anyway, so if you don’t want to reclaim your house, then…?”
“I have not fully decided, but I intend to climb Adamant’s ranks. That way I can still do my duty as a noble daughter, and support my flighty cousin, and indeed, all of the noble daughters who join Adamant. I think perhaps I am most suited to become a counsellor, a kind voice to listen, wise advice to be dispensed. After all, I am Takatsukasa Sakura, yet now I find I even prefer just being Sakura. Your relative, I suppose.”
“By marriage, certainly.” I agreed. “A counsellor, huh? That’s actually a wonderful ideal. You always tried to help Hinata fit in, even when she fought you, didn’t you?”
“She did!” Sayuri-chan agreed, proud of her mistress. “Though it was… difficult. Hinata-sama had some legitimate grievances, even if none of those were Sakura-sama’s fault!”
Oh yes. The fact that Sakura’s technically a bastard daughter, thus only half Takatsukasa, same as Hinata, but they were still treated so differently due to the coverup. I know that will be an issue when they return to Hanafubuki when it’s rebuilt, though… with a large portion of the students there in Adamant, it might not be as bad as we imagine…
“Even so, her resentment was understandable. But now… we have a healthier relationship.” Sakura smiled. “I… hardly hate how things have turned out. I just wish father was not such a fool.”
“He’s comfortable, in his ‘health retreat’.” I agreed. Indeed, he was still under house arrest, though he lived a life wanting for nothing but freedom. When Hinata had fully solidified Takatsukasa house and he could cause no further trouble, he’d be released.
“Indeed. Well then, we should not keep you…” Sakura demurred, and I shook my head.
“Actually, I’m here for a reason. Not just to mess with Watari Megumi-chan. I have a gift for you too, Sayuri-chan.” I added, and she frowned at me, the petite, feminine young woman clearly wary.
“I don’t need a hug or any head pats, I assure you!”
“Nor would I dare.” I chuckled. “Anyway, here.” I produced one of the necklaces taken from Glitonea and the Fossegrim. “It will strengthen your ability further.”
“Oh, how wonderful.” Sayuri-chan sighed, taking it from me, draping it around her swan-like neck. “I am already so forgettable, aren’t I?”
“I don’t know about that.” I promised. “A delicate beauty like you sticks in the mind.”
At my words, she flushed, and for a moment I did lose track of her, and as Tsukiko whispered I was being mean, my Eyes finally tracked down the blushing young woman. She’d not moved, it only seemed like she’d escaped. “Stop looking at me!” Sayuri-chan covered her face, and I chuckled.
“Sorry, my bad. I didn’t lie though. Anyway, Sakura, I bet she performed well in the conflict?”
“Indeed. She protected the musicians from those stealthy fishmen. She triumphed in the battle of being unnoticed…” Sakura’s smile was an oddly warn, teasing one, and as Sayuri-chan’s flush deepened, she actually winked at me. I guess she really is Hinata’s cousin. Now her burden to always be the impeccable daughter of the Three Great Houses is lifted, she can be herself a little more.
“…regardless, she acquitted herself admirably, and I am proud of her, as both mistress and friend.” Sakura added.
“That’s great. Well then…” I resolved to help Sakura reach her ideal role. It was a shame no Favours suited her, but that didn’t mean I couldn’t strengthen and support her in other ways.
“Yes, it seems Takakura-san is watching.” Sakura nodded, and so Tsukiko and I said our farewells and strolled over.
“Hey Kana. Mizuki-chan, Eui.” I greeted them all, Tsukiko doing likewise. There were other Adamant women I didn’t know well with them, who I gave polite nods.
“Hey, Akio. I was awesome, wasn’t I? Even if it’s just doing construction on the battlefield!” Kana added, and I swept her into a hug.
“Hardly. You were incredible. I’m sure that everyone in Adamant knows it too.”
“I guess so.” Mizuki-chan harrumphed. “I don’t think it would have been much fun getting ambushed in all those alleyways and tangled hovels. It… reminds me of Hanafubuki. If we’re going to fight, we should do it in the open!”
Eui nodded too. “Such places favour the defenders. I… know this all too well.”
“I bet you do, Eui!” Mizuki-chan agreed. It seemed the two of them had become close, which made sense, as they had a shared traumatic experience, in a sense.
“Anyway…” Mizuki-chan cleared her throat again, crossing her arms. She then glanced down, before she looked up into my eyes, and managing a rather heroic and yet adorable effort to pretend she wasn’t bothered, left her arms there, with predictable results. “Kana-chan was awesome. I hope one day I can do things like that!”
“If you train hard, you’ll get there.” Kana chuckled fondly. “Daiyu’s Cultivation training will pay off. Of course, you could persuade Akio to give you a Favour, but…”
“Such power isn’t given lightly.” Eui agreed. “To accept it is… more of a responsibility than I can bear right now.”
“I understand your worries, but I would not be so strained.” Tsukiko assured them. “Akio is not as greedy a man as you fear.”
“You think? I beg to differ.” Kana giggled, face red. She was drinking what looked like orange juice, but I could smell it wasn’t. Still, with her stats, she’s more drunk on the atmosphere, rather than the vodka in it, I’d say. “Akio’s greed knows no bounds. It’s just… he makes you want to throw yourself into his clutches. That being said…” She winked at me. “…it wasn’t just me who did her part. Mizuki-chan and Eui here both fought well.”
“I know. And while I don’t have a Favour for either of you…” Mizuki-chan was close. Unfortunately, if I gave her what I thought possible, it wouldn’t have the effect I was searching for. Whether that was the tingle of Foresight, or I could just foresee the Connection such would create via my Path, two corners wouldn’t work, a third would be needed. So instead, there are another pair of candidates who suit them better, I think. Buit… if I could find the right three, in a vein similar to what I have here, then Mizuki-chan and her sisters would become true powerhouses, with immeasurable utility. So I’ll keep searching…
“…I do have you both down for commendations and rewards. What would you like?”
Eui frowned. “Better weapons. Don’t mistake me, I like the guns just fine. If I had those at Choe-Museon, that bastard brother and bitch sister would both have died before they could cause trouble…” She clenched her fist reflexively in furious anger. “…but I need something that suits my Cultivation, I think. If I’m to be true to Matriarch Daiyu’s teachings.”
“All right. Liaise with her, and whatever you come up with, either I, or the craftsmen, will make. You, Mizuki-chan?”
“I hate pain! The armour is good, but… I want something better!”
“Okay. Cute, durable, pain-absorbent armour it is!” A custom set made from Duke Myrcolaxriath materials, Akionite and more… we can’t outfit everyone with such time-consuming, resource heavy gear in the shorter term, but if I think of it as my next prototype…
“It doesn’t need to be cute…” Mizuki-chan then thought about it. “…but I suppose prettier is better!”
“Yes, it should match you.” I teased, enjoying the sort of banter which made me feel like I was talking to a younger Aiko and Eri again, and as Mizuki flushed scarlet, unsure of whether to snap back or be happy at the compliment, Eri retorted in my mind.
Oh, so you get a replacement sister for Aiko now she’s thrown herself at you? Cold, Akio! How cold!
I was shocked by her cheek, but that just made me realise she was quite calm, so the situation couldn’t be as dire there as I feared.
It’s plenty awful, don’t think otherwise. But… with father-in-law resigned, and us listening to and addressing genuine objections, it’s reached a stalemate of sorts. We’ll carry on for a bit then meet up with you, give mother-in-law and father-in-law time to think. My parents will help out.
Okay, makes sense. We might get that mini golf yet!
Oh, we certainly shall! Wow, I promise not to choke at the final hole, my days of finishing weak are over!
As my sis exerted her mental effort to communicate, Mizuki-chan came down on the side of accepting my compliment, showing she’d finally grown comfortable with me. Puffing out her chest with pride, to which I looked away with a herculean effort, she grinned. “Yeah, make it super pretty, but also tough! I’ve hade enough of being stabbed to last a lifetime!”
“Haven’t we all?” Kana chuckled. “Anyway, Akio, you must have a lot of people to see…”
“That I do.” I nodded. “But how about we all play mini golf later?”
“Sounds fun! In that case…” Tsukiko agreed to stay behind and keep Kana and the others company, and I headed off, running into more and more locals and tourists who’d come down to the town to film the throngs of identically dressed women who’d invaded their home…
***
After hanging out with David for an hour, pounding shots with him and his fellow Knights, which was a rather futile endeavour for us, but left our new Knights happily wasted, much to David’s wicked amusement, I did the rounds, the evening passing.
Though before I had left that pub, I set David a challenge, to learn water element swiftly, as if he did so, I had the perfect gift for him. Some would perhaps consider it wasteful, offering him another Favour, when he already had a decent one, but David was loyal, a powerful, skilled fighter, and more importantly, the Favour would not only remove his one weakness, but it would synergise tremendously with his already potent strengths, making him a true top-tier combatant, who would be reassuring to have in our corner. Of course, he agreed, boasting that he’d handle it, as soon as he’d drank his hapless Knights into insensibility. How very like him…
After talking to many groups, I ducked into an old-looking, two-story pub. On the top floor, at the small bar, I found Yu-mi and her Korean group, as well as Hinata. On seeing us, they broke into broad smiles, and Hinata tapped the one open stool next to her, before changing her mind with a grin, and gesturing to her lap.
“Akio, take a seat!” she chortled, and I took the open chair.
“Sorry. You can sit on my lap, but the other way around looks kind of odd.”
“Hey, I’m all for equal opportunities.” Hinata trilled, before getting up and sitting on me, snuggling back. “Anyway, a great success. Better yet…” she grinned wickedly.”…the Fae left behind since we didn’t want to overwork Ling, have swept the area for Etherites and we turned up a nice stash. Coastal areas are great!”
“They certainly are.” Yu-mi agreed. “I should have been swifter and offered you my lap. No offense, Hinata, it would look more natural.”
“None taken. But if you’re too slow, you miss out.” She stuck out her tongue playfully. As Soo-ah ordered me a whiskey, Hinata explained what they’d been talking about. “We were just comparing notes about how they found the battle.”
“Quite scary…” Da-eun interjected. “…despite all the training, I was sweating so hard, and my legs were shaking! I was desperate to pee myself, but… when the fighting started, I forgot all that…”
“Nobody would admit to that, Da-eun, darling.” Soo-ah handed me my whiskey. Hinata cheekily bent down, slurped at the glass, and then opened her mouth, so I locked lips, sucking the whiskey out of her mouth. She then licked her lips, eyeing Yu-mi challengingly, while Soo-ah chuckled at her boldness, and Ji-hye, who I was starting to realise, despite her driven ambition, was rather eccentric, as evidenced by her dress sense, clapped as if watching something very interesting. Fortunately, in uniform she cuts an elegant figure…
“Why not, Yu-mi, it’ll be fun!” Da-eun teased, and Yu-mi, face red, shook her head.
“Not in public like this. I thought the Japanese were supposed to be reserved.” Yu-mi declined, and Hinata tittered.
“Oh, we are. I’m unusually pushy, especially for the nobility. Because I don’t see any point in holding back. Who can tell us no? But if you want to take things to the next level, Yu-mi, best grow bolder. Though from what Eri says…” She winked, a wicked smirk on her face.
“Oh, a challenge, is it?” Yu-mi’s face was crimson, but she boldly grabbed my glass, then my face, and her tongue, followed by a mouthful of whiskey. As I responded, tangling my tongue with hers, she gasped, and after a long, deep kiss, we parted. “How was that, Hinata, my dear Commander?”
“To you, I’m just a sister now.” Hinata winked. “You’ll take your place as Princess rank after enough training. Consider the upcoming Korea trip your audition.”
“How about us, darling?” Soo-ah swirled her own glass. “I’m happy to join in the fun.” Da-eun, Ji-hye, and even the quiet Nari, nodded, but I shook my head.
“That wouldn’t be appropriate, or necessary.”
At my refusal, Soo-ah shook her head, looking gorgeous in her uniform, voluptuous in a way Asians seldom were, but far from fat. She was attracting stares, and I didn’t blame the guys (and girls) who were gazing at the group. “He’s in denial. Isn’t he?”
“That’s what makes him charming. I like the stubbornness.” Hinata giggled.
“It’s a bit frustrating, darling.” Soo-ah shrugged. “I think we’ve made it plain we’re here not just to join your Army, but to join Yu-mi darling and little Hinata here in your life. We all have our reasons, some more serious than others…” She nodded at Ji-hye, who frowned, suddenly serious. “…but while we joke around, we Gangnam girls are very flirty, we’re also completely serious.”
“I know. But… and don’t mistake me, while you’re all gorgeous, and dedicated, it takes more than that to win my heart. And you’re all women far too worthy to merely be notches on my bedposts.”
As Yu-mi blushed, as it clearly meant she’d succeeded, Soo-ah shrugged theatrically, a rueful smile on her plump lips. “And that’s why we won’t give up, you know? Even in rejection, you flatter us, and mean it, yes?”
“How could I not? Objectively, you’re all amazing women. But I’m just content to see you fulfil your dreams. And support Yu-mi in what’s to come.”
“And they shall!” Hinata declared. “Tomorrow we’re off to Korea. We’ll gather Violet’s brother and the rest of her Guild, join up with Suk’ja’s team, and start claiming redress from Korea for their treachery.” She then glanced at Ji-hye. “Of course, we might have to make a few examples, but…”
“I’m ready!” Ji-hye clenched her fist. “My brothers will learn. I can do it now.” She lifted up her little finger, and everyone but Hinata, me included, all linked our fingers together. “Together. Our overlooked value will be their defeat.”
“Yes, and when we prove that many Hunters fall even below Adamant, we’ll shake Korea to the core.” Hinata agreed.
“It’s going to be tough though. Can you win?” I asked, before regretting my question. “No, I know you’ve put in the work. And Yu-mi’s done her best too. But… look, something’s changed. With Yu-mi’s Seven-Fang Bracelet Of The Cŵn Annwn, and the way we’ve shared it out, strengthened by my own Path and nature… now any one of you would be suitable for a particular Favour. And any of you has earned it. I know how well you performed.”
“We didn’t want to shame Yu-mi darling, did we?” Soo-ah smiled. “After all, we’re very proud of her and what she’s achieved.”
“In that case, it makes sense to…” I began, and Ji-hye’s expression hardened.
“I don’t want it. If I take it, it ruins the whole point of my victory.”
“How? You still show up your brothers.” I asked, and Hinata sighed.
“That was what she wanted. But now she’s here…”
“I have my pride too.” Ji-hye insisted. “Now it’s not just about showing my wretched brothers women aren’t worthless, just for marrying off and bearing children. Now… I have to do my duty, and uphold you, my lord!”
My lord, huh? Yeah, Ji-hye’s a strange one.
“I’d love it, but… if I take it, you have to marry me.” Soo-ah winked playfully. “Hinata here won’t let you give away such a treasure otherwise, she’s a shrewd woman. So now’s your chance…”
“I think Yu-mi is the only choice, if Ji-hye doesn’t want it, and you don’t want to take Soo-ah-unni up on her offer.” Da-eun smiled as if extremely amused.
“I’ll pass for now as well.” Nari added. “Yu-mi definitely makes sense.”
“You girls…” Yu-mi was touched. “Well then, I suppose… we could consider it an engagement gift? It might help mom like you more. Dad already has no say.” Yu-mi let out a nervous, exasperated titter. “He’s got to agree with everything mom says if he wants to get back on her good side and avoid divorce. I think… thanks, Akio.”
“Oh?” I raised an eyebrow questioningly, and she kissed me fiercely, ignoring the supportive banter from her friends, forcing herself to be bold. When we parted, she licked her lips, tasting my saliva.
“You know it’s thanks to you they even have a chance. Now you just have to show my mom you’re the man to look after me for life, despite the circumstances. So… you never said what Favour it was.”
“I didn’t, no. Well…”
Victoria’s Triumphant March - This Divine Favour is made of concentrated Adherence, refined Ether and Soullight-infused Truesoul strands, and though it has sustained significant damage, it has been repaired by infusion of equally substantial Adherence and Soullight, and is now fully functional, if of a slightly different nature to originally intended.
The Favour creates a Connection between those within a ‘Legio’, which is a type of military group. At Conterbernium level, of up to ten troops, Alacrity and Fortitude are significantly increased, and when in marching formation centred on the bearer, fatigue is significantly lessened. An additional effect has been added during the repair, that Bonds and Connections can be strengthened if they effect all troops in the Conterbernium, as well as the bearer who commands.
At Centuria level, of up to one hundred troops, the strain upon the bearer is magnified, but in addition, sensory perception of all forces increase, as does Resilience and Determination.
At Legio level, of up to a thousand troops, few will possess the strength to bear such strain, but if the Legio can be carried, while in a march or in battle formation, recovery of Aether and Elemental energies increases, and wounds and injuries will be slowly recovered by absorbing and utilising ambient Ether.
Just as Victoria commands those who have discipline, bravery and loyalty to triumph upon the battlefield, so too will you be able to guide the troops to glory upon your wings of victory. [Class: Imperious] [Type: Principle]
“That’s… shouldn’t you or one of the others have it?” Yu-mi frowned. “I mean, don’t get me wrong, I’m prepared, but…”
“I probably could take it, but it wouldn’t be that useful for me. I already strengthen Bonds and Connections. Besides, I’m not a commander, I’m more a Hero unit…”
“Starcraft…” Ji-hye murmured, not escaping the stereotype that Koreans loved that game.
“Basically, there are a lot of downsides to me having it. Whereas the upside is you’ll get a bunch of stats, Yu-mi, and I’d feel better knowing you’re safer. And it’s ideal for the current situation…”
Yu-mi stared at her little finger, before nodding. “I understand, but…”
“Looks like you’ll have to step up, darling. Commanding a Legion…” Soo-ah teased, and Hinata nodded.
“You’ll be a Princess of Adamant sooner rather than later, so command is your destiny. Looks like you’ll be training harder than you expected.” She then paused. “It might be worth you taking command training from the JSDF. I was planning on tagging along with Akio and Motoko on it, we can add you, no problem…”
“If… if you’re sure?” Yu-mi took a deep breath. “I can’t say I hate being thought well of, but… considering how this all started… you keep giving me everything, while demanding so little.”
“No need to feel guilty.” I promised. “I’ll demand one thing. Yu-mi, stay by my side, okay?”
With a tremulous smile, she nodded. “I will. Isn’t that what dating is?”
As Soo-ah laughed, praising us for being smooth, Hinata hopped off my lap, a trace regretfully, then I took Yu-mi outside, up the stairs at the back up the pub, partially up the hill. Once we had some privacy, I transferred the Favour to Yu-mi, pleased that this one also seemed to give a decent Statistic boost to her, making the chances of her falling into danger much reduced. As I tenderly mopped off her sweaty brow, she kissed me, and we held hands back down the hill.
“There’s a face of a woman in love.” Da-eun chuckled, and Nari nodded, agreeing.
“How was it?” Ji-hye asked, curious, and Yu-mi shrugged.
“I’ve had more fun before. I’ll be honest.” She shuddered then. “But I finally feel I’m on the same level as everyone else now.”
“I get that.” Hinata nodded. “It’s nice to know Akio values us enough to give us such precious gifts, for our own safety. Now then…” She winked at me playfully. “…I can’t see Ji-hye losing.”
“Isn’t it cheating though?” Ji-hye asked again, and Hinata shook her head.
“Not at all. You’re not a Chosen, it’s all your own power, and the power of friendship you’ve cultivated by having allies. If they don’t like it, they can challenge me!”
“No way. I dislike my brothers… a lot…” Ji-hye admitted. “…but I don’t want them to die! I saw you on the battlefield, those idiots aren’t your match!”
“In any case…” Yu-mi activated her ability, and my finger throbbed, but… oh. Really?
How fascinating. That… is almost what I did. Rose watched eagerly, as when we were all taken into the Conterbernium, not only did the connection of the fangs from the bracelet intensify, but Lovers’ Link spontaneously thickened, and I could sense the emotions of the Korean girls. More importantly…
“No thanks.” Hinata, through sheer effort of will, forced down the rising surge of Lovers’ Link. “No shortcuts for me. I’ll break through to eleven soon enough, and it’ll be through my own love, through acceptance of what’s difficult…”
I feel rather ashamed. Rose shrugged. But I assure you, my feelings are not false, an illusion created by Wisdom. Even so… to be a true Brúðr, I believe a genuine Rank eleven Connection, as your own spin on Wisdom terms it, is the minimum acceptable. I too shall strive. I feel I can achieve it.
I know you can. If anything, Lin is impressive, as she bypassed all the shortcuts through physical intimacy, raising our affection…
I… have no fear… Lin was shy, but resolute. …when you reach us in person, I will have no hesitation in discovering for myself just… how… that… feels… Her thoughts trailed off to quiet whispers, Rose laughing happily. I smiled myself, patting Hinata on the head, understanding.
“I know. Even Eri wouldn’t say that your Rank shows how much you love me…”
“She would, but only when she’s winning…” Hinata muttered, and Yu-mi agreed, snorting a laugh and saying that was exactly what Eri would do.
“…but yes. There’s more to Lovers’ Link. I know. Ever since Hyacinth managed it, then Shaeula. We all have our inner demons. I’m lucky…” Hinata shrugged. “…mine aren’t so scary. Not like poor Daiyu, for example. Expect a victory soon enough!” She raised her fingers in the traditional pose. “And speaking of… Ji-hye…”
“I won’t lose. Absolutely not!” She made the Adamant salute. “How could I? Right now I feel I could punch through a steel bank vault!”
Quite the turn of phrase there. Yep, she’s eccentric.
I wasn’t the only one who thought so, as Nari shook her head, a slight smile on her face. “I doubt it. We haven’t grown that much stronger, have we?”
“Strong enough…” she countered, and Yu-mi whispered to me, keeping her voice a barest whisper, tickling my ear with her breath.
“You know, this Favour seems weak, and in the hands of another, it probably would be, but for us… I see the potential. And I’ll be worthy of it, okay? So…” She kissed my cheek as the others bickered playfully. “…don’t miss me too much, okay? I won’t be gone long. After all, my home isn’t Korea now, it’s where you are. But… we’ll make sure Korea is part of it. It’ll be great, won’t it?”
I raised an eyebrow at her question, and now she giggled, speaking out loud. “After all, now I can throw down a Territory. Won’t it be nice, being able to hit the clubs of Gangnam as easy as we can Tokyo? Gomdori-nim will be pleased to see us all again, but shocked at all the gorgeous women who’ll be coming over…”
“Oh my, yes, Yu-mi darling! I can hardly wait!” Soo-ah enthused, and I exchanged a look with Hinata, and the fire in her brown eyes said it all. Yeah, Korea, and anyone who opposes us there, are in trouble. It’s time to pay their penalty, and… looks like it won’t be cheap, not at all…
