On a Stormy Night, the Campus Belle Knocked on My Door Seeking Shelter
Chapter 141: Transmigrated Back?
Seeing Chen Mo curled into a ball, Su Yuqing couldn’t resist reaching out with her fair, delicate fingers and gently poking his cheek, which was flushed red from the fever.
It felt soft and hot to the touch.
Chen Mo didn’t react at all, but Su Yuqing found it rather amusing.
But after a few pokes, her touch unconsciously softened into a gentle caress.
As Su Yuqing gently stroked Chen Mo’s cheek, she prayed silently for him to get well soon.
Although she liked this soft, weak version of Chen Mo who depended on her, she still wanted him to be healthy and well.
After stroking his face for a moment, Su Yuqing again placed the back of her hand on his forehead to check his temperature. It still felt terrifyingly hot.
She immediately took out her phone and started looking up what to do for a cold and fever.
She read that you could soak a towel in cold water, wring it out until it was nearly dry, and place it on the patient’s forehead to help bring down the fever and reduce discomfort.
She stood up at once to do just that, but then she heard Chen Mo murmuring something in his delirium...
RUMBLE!
CRACK!
As lightning flashed before his eyes, Chen Mo—who had just been aching all over from his cold and fever—suddenly felt his body go light. All the discomfort from his illness vanished.
But certain parts of his body were still aching faintly.
The incessant rain beat down on him.
SPLASH!
In a daze, Chen Mo was shocked to find his surroundings strangely familiar.
’Isn’t this the police station rooftop?’
The rainy sky, the rumbling thunder.
The pile of cigarette butts in the corner—everything was so familiar.
"No way," Chen Mo muttered, staring blankly at his hands before yanking up his shirt.
The scars covering his body were shocking to behold. These familiar marks were the medals of honor from his time as a criminal detective.
’I... I’m back again?’
’I’m actually back in my detective days?’
Chen Mo stared at his surroundings in disbelief.
’No, this is impossible.’ He rushed to the edge of the rooftop. For a split second, he wanted to jump, just to test the boundary between reality and illusion.
’Was this past week, when I went back in time, real? Or was it all just a hallucination I had when I was struck by lightning?’
’But could a hallucination feel so real?’
’My time with Su Yuqing this past week is still so vivid. A hallucination couldn’t possibly fabricate all those details so clearly.’
’Besides, how could I have been struck by lightning and not have a single injury?’
Chen Mo checked himself over and over again.
He couldn’t believe he was back in this world without Su Yuqing.
"Chen Mo... Chen Mo..."
In a daze, Chen Mo heard someone softly calling his name from behind.
But when he turned around, he saw no one.
The figure that always appeared before him on rainy days had, for some reason, vanished.
"What in the world is going on? Are you messing with me, you bastard in the sky?!" Chen Mo screamed at the heavens, hoping for another bolt of lightning to strike him back to his high school days.
But all that answered him was the cold rain beating down on his body.
Chen Mo stood motionless, letting the rain soak him to the bone.
Until the phone in his pocket suddenly rang.
"Chen Mo, where are you?"
"What is it?" Chen Mo answered listlessly, his heart feeling like dead ashes.
"Haha, we got news!"
"What news?" Chen Mo couldn’t share the other person’s excitement. He remained completely indifferent.
"It’s the news you’ve been waiting for! You won’t believe this—we searched high and low for a break, and this one just fell right into our laps!
That high school girl case you’ve been chasing for so long? A death row inmate suddenly confessed right before his execution."
In that instant, Chen Mo, who had been indifferent to everything, felt as if he’d been struck by lightning.
"Who confessed?" he asked, his voice trembling with excitement.
"Turns out he’s connected to the girl. They just had so few chances to interact that we never zeroed in on him during the initial investigation."
"Who is it?" That was all Chen Mo cared about.
"It’s..."
CRACK!
A brilliant flash of lightning struck Chen Mo as he was on the phone.
Just as Su Yuqing leaned down to try and hear what Chen Mo was murmuring in his sleep, she saw his body jolt violently. His eyes shot open.
He wore a look of utter shock.
Seeing this, Su Yuqing assumed he’d had a nightmare and rushed to his side to comfort him.
She sat on the edge of the bed beside him, putting one arm around him while gently patting the blanket on his chest. "What’s wrong?" she asked softly. "Did you have a bad dream?"
Chen Mo was still in a state of shock. He looked around and saw that he was back in his high school days. The discomfort from his cold and fever washed over him again. *Cough, cough, cough...*
After a few pained coughs, he suddenly felt an overwhelming urge to cry with relief. He was back. He was really back.
Forgetting his own condition, he immediately pulled Su Yuqing into a tight embrace, as if terrified of losing her all over again.
Su Yuqing didn’t know what had happened, but it was clear he must have been terrified by a nightmare. She didn’t struggle, letting his feverish, furnace-like body hold her tight. She gently hugged him back, stroking his back and whispering words of comfort.
"Don’t be scared. I’m right here." Her words, meant to soothe him after a nightmare, struck the very core of his heart.
"Don’t ever leave me," he murmured.
But Su Yuqing heard him.
A shiver ran through her.
Chen Mo’s words were practically a confession.
No matter how close they had become, they had never verbally crossed that line in their relationship.
But with that one sentence, Chen Mo was clearly making a promise.
After he said it, he buried his head in Su Yuqing’s shoulder.
That moment he’d spent back in his life as a detective had nearly shattered him.
Whether it had been a dream or not, the experience was more terrifying than any nightmare.
Chen Mo never wanted to go through that again.
"I’ll never leave," Su Yuqing replied, gently stroking his back and whispering in his ear.
By now, Chen Mo had recovered somewhat from his disoriented state. Realizing he had lost his composure, he slowly loosened his arms from around Su Yuqing.
Su Yuqing pulled back a little, looking at him with concern. "Feeling better? I’ll go make you some brown sugar ginger tea. It’ll make you feel more comfortable and help calm your nerves."
Su Yuqing had just stood up to leave when a weak but scalding hot hand suddenly grabbed hers.
"What is it?" Su Yuqing turned back, giving Chen Mo a gentle smile.
The tangible warmth and feel of her small, soft hand—the palm bearing the faintest trace of calluses—was what finally convinced Chen Mo that this, right now, was the real world.
Once he had confirmed this, Chen Mo slowly let go of her hand, managing a faint smile. "It’s nothing."
