NTR: Barbarian Harem Conquest
Chapter 269: Barbarian Vs Beast Emperor (1)
Kane met the stare without dropping his gaze.
The size difference was absurd. The weight of presence was worse.
Every instinct that had kept him alive through tournament fields, elven courts, and mutant clearings screamed that this was not an opponent he could simply overpower.
He forced the flicker of real uncertainty back down into the cold place where he kept useful fear and kept his shoulders square.
Grathak continued, almost thoughtfully, as if speaking to himself as much as to the room.
"Savages. That is what the softer empires call your kind. Walking into my halls with my sister’s scent on your skin and an axe on your back. Bold. Or stupid. I have not decided which. Most humans who reach this deep either crawl or they are carried in pieces. You walked. That earns a moment of my curiosity. Nothing more."
Kane laughed once, short and genuine enough to make Marisa’s eyes cut toward him in clear warning. The sound was raw in the tense air.
"Look who’s talking."
The words hung in the air for half a heartbeat.
Grathak moved.
There was no roar this time, no theatrical warning.
One massive leg drove forward, and the kick caught Kane square in the chest with the force of a siege weapon.
Bam!
The impact was catastrophic.
Kane left his feet instantly, flew backward, and smashed through the thinner stone wall of the reinforced chamber in an explosion of dust, broken masonry, and flying fragments.
He hit the corridor beyond hard enough to drive every bit of air from his lungs and slide another several paces across the rough floor before friction finally stopped him.
Fuck.
Pain bloomed across his ribs in a white-hot wave.
Something in his chest protested sharply.
The Empress’s Mark flared under his skin, fighting the blunt trauma, flooding his system with enough residual strength to keep him from blacking out.
Somewhere behind the ringing in his ears, he heard Marisa’s voice, sharp with something that might have been anger, calculation, or both.
"Brother—"
Grathak’s footsteps followed through the hole Kane had made.
The emperor stepped out into the corridor, ducking slightly under the broken lintel, red eyes still fixed on the human who was already forcing himself up onto one knee amid the rubble.
Dust and stone fragments rained down around them.
Distant guards had gone completely silent.
Even the sounds from the pens seemed to pause, as if the entire underground level was holding its breath.
Kane spat a mouthful of blood onto the floor, braced one hand against the cracked wall, and pushed himself fully upright.
The world tilted once and then steadied.
Mjoldr had been knocked from his shoulder in the impact; he called it back with a sharp gesture, and the axe slapped into his waiting palm with a solid, reassuring weight.
The pain in his chest remained, sharp, deep, radiating, but nothing felt broken beyond immediate use.
He could still stand. He could still grip the weapon. That would have to be enough.
Grathak studied him with open interest now, head tilted slightly, the way a large predator studies something that should have stayed down but did not.
"You get back up. Good. Most humans stay down after the first reminder of where they stand. Some never get up at all. You are already more entertaining than the last three outsiders who thought themselves important enough to walk these halls."
Kane rolled one shoulder, felt the fierce protest of bruised muscle and possibly cracked bone, and settled Mjoldr into a loose ready grip.
His voice came out rough, edged with blood, but steady.
"I’m not most humans. And I’m not here to stand where you tell me."
Marisa had followed them into the corridor.
Her face was composed again, the political mask forced back into place, but her amber eyes moved rapidly between the two males, measuring distance, angle, the way Grathak’s enormous weight was balanced on the broken stone, the way Kane’s breathing had not yet evened out, the subtle tremor in his stance that he was trying to hide.
She didn’t speak again. This part was no longer hers to guide.
Grathak’s grin returned, wider and more unhinged than before. He spread his arms slightly, the gesture almost welcoming, the sheer size of him still blotting out a portion of the corridor and the light.
"Then show me what you are here for, barbarian. Talk is the currency of weaker thrones. Soft empires love their words and their treaties and their careful alliances. In my halls we measure first and discuss after, if there is anything left to discuss. Strength is the only language that has ever mattered here. Everything else is noise."
He took one slow step closer, the floor seeming to feel his weight even through the scattered rubble.
"Or do you need another reminder before the real conversation begins? I can provide it. I have all night. The pens will continue without me. My sister will wait. The packs above will hear whatever we decide to leave standing."
Kane spat another mouthful of blood to the side, never taking his eyes off the emperor, and shifted his stance on the broken stone.
The first blow had been a message, clear, brutal, and personal.
The next exchange would decide whether the message was received and accepted... or answered in kind.
Kane raised his hand.
Mjoldr tore free from the rubble and slapped into his palm with a solid, familiar weight.
He rolled his sore shoulder once, feeling the deep bruise Grathak’s kick had left across his chest, and lifted his eyes to the towering emperor.
"Would you prefer if I use a weapon?"
Grathak did not bother answering with words.
He simply rolled his neck until something cracked and settled into a loose, ready stance that still looked almost lazy.
"You are weak," the emperor rumbled. "Use whatever you want. It will not matter."
"What about you?"
"I don’t need a weapon to rip you apart."
Kane moved first.
