No Money to Cultivate Immortality?
Chapter 505: Champion of Civil Engineering
As the competition came to an end, Zhang Yu reattached his own limbs, while Mo Shangjin retrieved the Law Husk of the Seven Absolutes from the battlefield.
The doctor glanced at Zhang Yu’s battered body and asked again, unwilling to give up, “Are you sure you don’t need treatment?”
Zhang Yu shook his head. “Just reattach the parts that were replaced by the Law Husk earlier. That’ll be enough.”
“As for the injuries I got during the match, don’t worry about those.”
He really wasn’t about to waste money on medical treatment—who knew how much they would charge?
But even without treatment, the Law Husk reattachment alone was expensive. The difference between Zhang Yu and Mo Shangjin’s physiques, the need for speed and precision, and Zhang Yu’s ever-strengthening body had all driven up the cost.
Altogether, the reattachment burned through nearly eight spirit coins. Out of his original savings—barely ten coins—he now had less than two left.
After all, he’d already spent quite a lot to upgrade his artifacts before the match to improve his odds of winning.
Judging from the results, the investment had been worth it.
The Taiyi Liquid Gold Pill had strengthened his Martial Qi, greatly prolonging his endurance against Xiangshan. The other artifacts, including the Goldfilament Jade Disk, hadn’t helped much during the direct confrontation, but they had been invaluable when aiding his teammates in construction—boosting their efficiency and improving the company’s future profits.
“The repair cost for the Law Husk of the Seven Absolutes… probably another five to ten spirit coins,” Zhang Yu sighed. “I’ll have to owe Mo Shangjin for now.”
Even though he had spent so much, Zhang Yu felt it was all worthwhile.
Winning the Civil Engineering Competition meant he would gain the blueprint of a military-grade armor and secure his transfer to the Artifact Refinement Department. His Immortal Path was suddenly wide open.
When his limbs were fully reattached, the Four-Headed White Ox within his consciousness roared to life. The activated flesh fused seamlessly under his will, temporarily sealing his wounds.
After a short rest, the team gathered again for the awards ceremony.
Before the eyes of countless spectators, Zhang Yu led the Wanfa University team onto the champion’s podium.
For veterans like Mo Shangjin and first-timers like Su Yanyang, the excitement was overwhelming. This was the first time in their lives they had won a cross-university championship.
“Finally, first place,” Mo Shangjin thought. “Now I can graduate without regrets.”
Shi Huaiyu smiled to herself. “With this achievement, both job hunting and graduate exams will be much easier.”
Her future suddenly seemed brighter than ever.
Su Yanyang sighed inwardly. “If Zhang Yu stays in the Civil Engineering Department next year, I could just coast to another easy victory… what a pity.”
Meanwhile, in the Spiritual Realm, the soul cultivators were also watching excitedly.
Zhao Tianxing was filled with emotion. “I never thought I’d see this day.”
Mo Tianyi exclaimed, “We’re just vocational students, but our résumés now outshine most students from the top ten academies!”
The elders of Ying Xin’s family laughed together. “We couldn’t even dream of such a championship while alive. Who’d have thought we’d get a share of the glory after death?”
Che Yufei stared longingly at the stage, snapping several photos and muttering to herself, “I’ll just edit myself into these later.”
Just then, Zhang Yu’s Law Husk eyes scanned the Spiritual Realm, sensing their presence. He called out, “You all should join us.”
Zhao Tianxing froze. “Us…?”
Zhang Yu smiled. “You fought alongside us, didn’t you? Come up and take the photo.”
Before Zhao Tianxing could react, Ying Xin’s grandfather had already materialized behind Zhang Yu, followed quickly by Che Yufei and the others.
The soul cultivators crowded behind the Wanfa University team, filling the entire podium to the brim.
Hu Yuntao hesitated, then stepped up as well.
“To hell with it. I’m done with Tianyao University anyway.”
Feeling the stares of countless demon-kin from both the venue and the Spiritual Realm, Hu Yuntao realized he had never felt this radiant before.
Zhao Tianxing quickly spent a few spirit coins to upgrade his display resolution, enlarging the name tag above his head so he’d appear clearly in the group photo.
He had only one thought in mind: “As soon as I get the picture, I’m posting it on my social feed!”
…
Elsewhere, Xiong Wenwu watched the broadcast and froze. “That guy… Hu Yuntao…”
Another bear demon beside him frowned. “What’s so funny?”
Xiong Wenwu smiled faintly. “An old high school friend of mine just won the championship.”
The bear demon was about to ask more, but their boss called them out. Together, they hefted their master’s cargo and got back to work.
…
True Lord Tianxiang glanced over the Wanfa University team and the soul cultivators behind them, a trace of surprise flickering in his eyes.
It was the first time he had ever seen someone invite soul cultivators onto the stage for the award ceremony.
Shaking his head, he walked forward to begin the presentation.
He looked at Zhang Yu calmly. “To think that half a year ago you didn’t even have a Military License, and now you’ve become the strongest civil engineer.”
Zhang Yu replied modestly, “You flatter me, True Lord.”
At that moment, a wave of boos erupted from the audience. Countless demon-kin hurled foul, aura-tainted projectiles toward the Wanfa University team.
It was clear that many demon-kin were deeply displeased.
But such minor filth could never touch them. The attacks were effortlessly blocked.
True Lord Tianxiang then presented the blueprint and usage rights of the military-grade armor—Biyue Goldcrystal Armor—to Wanfa University and its winning team.
With this, the university gained the right to manufacture and study the armor, while the students could commission their own custom sets.
Of course, using a military-grade armor required a Military License—but Wanfa University would surely grant them additional rewards for their victory.
Zhang Yu eagerly scanned the blueprint, already planning to study it in detail once he joined the Artifact Refinement Department. He wanted to understand why the Biyue Goldcrystal Armor was considered part of the Chain Diagram set.
Meanwhile, on the runner-up podium, Xiangshan stood alone.
Messages flooded through his Law Husk display:
“Why don’t you just die?”
“Refund our money!”
“If I were you, I’d drop out!”
The entire Tianyao University network was filled with insults and curses.
The spectators glared at him with fury.
His teammates demanded compensation for their revival expenses.
His clansmen left in silence, returning to work to make up for lost time.
Though surrounded by crowds, Xiangshan felt utterly alone.
Moments ago he had commanded the battlefield like a storm; now, the same demon-kin who worshipped him scorned him.
…
After the ceremony, the Wanfa University team began their journey home.
While still aboard the flying vessel, congratulatory messages flooded in from classmates and teachers.
By the time they arrived back at Wanfa University, they were whisked straight to a celebratory banquet.
Even before entering the hall, the rich aromas of food and wine hit them, making everyone’s stomachs growl.
Inside, congratulatory banners filled the air, celebrating the Civil Engineering Department’s championship.
Messages came not only from the Security, Pharmacology, and Artifact Refinement Departments, but even from several vice principals.
Mo Shangjin chuckled. “It’s been years since we won a championship. No wonder the faculty wanted to celebrate.”
Shi Huaiyu laughed. “It’s also the first major success since Director Gao took over the department.”
As Zhang Yu and the others entered, countless eyes turned toward them.
He spotted familiar faces—students like Ma Xuan and Gongshu Jin from Civil Engineering, Feng Tingting from the Artifact Refinement Department, and top students such as Yan Qianji and Ye Xingli.
There were also professors like Tu Lishan and Lang Yougong, along with teachers from other departments.
Even True Lord Qiyun, the vice principal in charge of academics, had projected his Spiritual Realm avatar and was chatting with Director Gao.
Feeling everyone’s gaze, the team tensed for a moment—then straightened with pride.
Someone began clapping, and soon the entire hall erupted into applause.
Zhang Yu thought helplessly, “This is getting a bit over the top.”
Spotting True Lord Magneto in the crowd, Zhang Yu quickly sent a message: “Teacher, are you all right?”
True Lord Magneto replied: “Before you leave, let Old Gao have one last moment of glory.”
Zhang Yu responded: “I may have told everyone during the competition that I plan to transfer… to boost morale.”
True Lord Magneto: “That’s fine.”
Meanwhile, True Lord Qiyun turned to Director Gao and smiled. “Old Gao, the Civil Engineering Department has grown well under your leadership.”
Director Gao laughed. “It’s all thanks to the university’s guidance and the hard work of our students.”
True Lord Qiyun said, “If you run into any difficulties, come to me.”
Director Gao smiled. “The Civil Engineering Department still needs more investment in talent cultivation…”
True Lord Qiyun thought privately, “Once Zhang Yu transfers and Mo Shangjin graduates, the department’s results will surely plummet. He’s right—they’ll need to nurture the next generation fast.”
Director Gao waved Zhang Yu over and said to True Lord Qiyun, “This young man has great talent and did a lot for the department this year. I hope you’ll look after him.”
True Lord Qiyun was slightly taken aback. “You want me to take care of Zhang Yu? He’s transferring to the Artifact Refinement Department… maybe focus on your own department first.”
