Nightmare Apostle
Chapter 2170 - 1181: Ghost Face_4
However... Yang Xiao thought for a moment, feeling as though something was amiss, but he couldn’t quite pinpoint what it was.
The sound of rain outside went pitter-patter, the night grew deeper, the rain fell harder, and the atmosphere in the office was heavy and oppressive.
Under Yang Xiao’s arrangement, besides the seven of them left in the office tonight, there was only Chief Zhou and two security department officers accompanying them.
Although everyone tried their best to pretend to be at ease, the seriousness in each of their eyes betrayed them.
Yang Xiao had seen one security officer’s hand constantly tucked inside his coat, likely clutching a handgun.
Guns were useless against ghosts; to avoid accidental shootings, Yang Xiao requested everyone to turn in their guns, locking them up together, which included Chief Zhou’s weapon.
It was clear that Chief Zhou and the two security officers were reluctant to hand over their guns, as subconsciously, the firearms were their source of confidence.
But under Chief Zhou’s orders, the two officers complied and surrendered their guns.
Two handguns and a submachine gun were all locked in the cabinet by Yang Xiao, and he tucked the key into his pocket.
Time ticked away, minute by minute, as the night grew deeper. Although no one spoke of it, internally, everyone was wondering who would die tonight.
Perhaps because of adequate precautions, no one would die tonight.
Of course, that would be the best outcome.
"Check if the windows are shut tight, how is there wind?" Zhao Xuejun said.
"Is there wind? I don’t think so." Zhang Xiaomin, sitting closest to the window, heard Zhao Xuejun’s request and gently lifted the corner of the curtain, confirming that the window was tightly sealed.
Her eyes inadvertently glanced outside; the rain curtain merged into one, resembling a curtain draping into the night.
After looking outside for a few moments, she suddenly felt inexplicably uneasy, like something had suddenly fixed its gaze on her.
Instinctively turning her head towards the source of the odd feeling, she found the all-consuming rain and darkness obscuring everything. She squinted her eyes, seeing something at the junction of the rain and night.
It was beside a crooked tree, a small white part distinctly contrasting the black trunk.
Using all her effort, Zhang Xiaomin couldn’t see clearly until a flash of lightning split the night sky, revealing the true form of that thing.
With the brief illumination, Zhang Xiaomin’s eyes widened in shock; she saw it was a face, a ghastly pale face!
The whole face was incredibly pale, as if drained of blood, while the pitch-black eyes were even deeper than the night, staring at her intently.
It was a person, someone with most of their body hidden behind the tree, leaving just a face peeking at her!
No, it wasn’t a person; it was a ghost! A ghost had set its sights on her!
Zhang Xiaomin let out a fierce scream and instinctively felt her legs weaken, tumbling and stumbling backwards. But when she turned around to seek help, the scene before her nearly crushed her.
Inside the large office space, it was now empty and silent, leaving just her alone.
Even the chairs, military coat, water cup on the desk, the reviewed data, all remained in their original positions; only the people had vanished. Everyone... had disappeared without a trace.
Suddenly, Zhang Xiaomin realized something even more terrifying; the reason she opened the curtain and looked outside was due to her partner Zhao Xuejun’s suggestion. But with hindsight, Zhao Xuejun, being so careful, would never suggest such a thing.
That voice wasn’t human; it was a ghost.
She had been deceived.
"It’s over..."
