Nightblade (Darkest night)
Chapter 329: Shadow trials[12]
In Sector 7-A, near an open-air amphitheater, there was a subtle tension in the air.
?Kaelen Sorel had assembled three other lower-ranked contestants—two Talented from minor houses and an assassin from a secondary syndicate.
They stood in a semicircle around Samantha, who stood at the center of the concrete stage, her spear resting lightly against her forearm.
"The clue says ’an ancient legacy untouched by modern forges,’ Kaelen declared, his voice ringing with absolute certainty.
"There isn’t a single weapon in this entire academy that fits that description except that black stick in your hands, Samantha!"
?Samantha looked at the four contestants surrounding her. Her expression was entirely calm, her eyes measuring their footwork, their balance, and their distance.
?"Kaelen," Samantha said, her tone steady and even. "If I am the Phantom Target, the system would have issued me a notification confirming my status as an objective. I received no such notification."
"Or you’re lying to protect your three-hundred-and-ten points," the secondary assassin sneered, drawing two curved short-swords.
?"Think about it logically," Samantha continued, ignoring the assassin. She looked directly into Kaelen’s eyes.
"If the trial system wanted to create a genuine test of deduction, why would it give a clue that singles out one person within ten seconds of the announcement? That isn’t a puzzle. That’s a target paint designed to eliminate the leaderboard front-runner."
?Kaelen hesitated.
?Samantha’s reasoning was sharp, logical, and painfully obvious once stated aloud. But the temptation of one hundred and fifty points—points that would instantly propel him into the Top 3—was clouding his judgment.
"Wrong answer, Kaelen," a lazy voice called out from the amphitheater entrance.
?Xander Gray strode onto the stage, holding his hands behind his head. Beside him walked Lucian, his daggers sheathed, his face an unreadable mask.
?Kaelen frowned, stepping back slightly. "Lucian? What are you doing here? She’s your primary rival on the leaderboard. If we take her down, you take First Place instantly."
?Lucian stopped ten paces from Kaelen. He glanced at Samantha, then looked at Kaelen with cold disdain.
?"I take First Place by securing verified objectives, Sorel," Lucian said cleanly. "Not by joining a desperate mob falling for a system trap."
?Xander snorted with laughter.
"Yeah, Kaelen, seriously. Lucian and I actually checked the database while you were busy giving speeches. The clue says ’ancient legacy,’ not ’ancient weapon.
The clue says the target bears an ancient legacy," Xander continued, his fingers idly twirling his silver stylus as he strolled across the concrete stage of the amphitheater.
"It never says the legacy belongs to a weapon."
?Kaelen’s grip on his rapier didn’t loosen, but his eyes narrowed as he stared between Xander and Lucian.
"Don’t play word games with me, Gray. Look at her. Look at that spear. It doesn’t register on standard scanners, it doesn’t run on runic sockets, and it looks like it was dug out of a thousand-year-old trench. If that isn’t an ’ancient legacy untouched by modern forges,’ then what is?"
?"It’s a red herring, you idiot," Lucian said coldly.
"The trial system doesn’t reward the first person to draw their weapon; it rewards the contestant who correctly filters signal from noise. If the system dropped a clue that points to a single, hyper-visible object held by the leaderboard front-runner within ten seconds of the broadcast, it isn’t a hint. It’s a filter designed to catch short-sighted contestants desperate for a shortcut."
?The secondary assassin holding the paired curved short-swords shifted his stance, his gaze darting nervously between Lucian and the floating system announcement above the sector.
The hundred-point penalty was a massive executioner’s axe dangling over all their scores. A single wrong call would drag anyone in the mid-ranks straight into structural elimination.
?"You’re making assumptions, Lucian," the assassin muttered, though his blades lowered an inch. "What if the system is double-bluffing? What if it’s explicitly testing whether we have the spine to engage the top seat?"
?"Then go ahead," Samantha said.
?Her voice was entirely level. She hadn’t adjusted her grip on the spear by a millimeter. The dark, lusterless shaft rested against her forearm, showing zero reflection under the overhead sector lights.
?"Engage," Samantha added, her dark eyes locking onto the assassin.
"Take the strike. But understand what you’re actually betting. You’re not hunting a target based on verification. You’re hunting the person you most want removed from the leaderboard because standing near the top makes you uncomfortable. If you’re wrong, you lose a hundred points, and your placement in Trial Three is permanently burnt."
?Silence settled over the open-air amphitheater.
?Xander let out a low whistle, grinning wide. "Damn. Brutal, logical, and completely accurate. I’d give that speech ninety-five points on style alone."
?Kaelen’s jaw clenched. His pride was screaming at him to order the attack, to prove that his instinct wasn’t flawed, but the cold math of the trial was suffocating.
He looked at Samantha’s motionless posture, then at Lucian, who was already assessing the escape routes and sightlines around the amphitheater perimeter.
?"This isn’t over," Kaelen spat, slowly easing his rapier back into its scabbard. "If the clues keep matching that spear, don’t think your logic is going to save you when the rest of the sector catches up."
?"I don’t rely on logic to save me, Sorel," Samantha replied quietly.
"I rely on the fact that you’re making decisions based on panic."
?Kaelen turned on his heel, motioning sharply for his three temporary allies to follow.
The secondary assassin lingered for a fraction of a second, his eyes lingering on Samantha’s spear, before he retreated into the shadowy arcade bordering Sector 7-A.
?Once the four figures disappeared down the pedestrian ramp, Xander relaxed his posture, sliding his stylus back into his belt casing.
?"Well, that was entertaining," Xander said, popping another synthetic nut into his mouth.
"Though, for the record, Samantha, that spear really is ridiculously suspicious. If I were a lesser genius, I would have tried to stab you myself."
?"You would have lost a hundred points," Samantha said, turning her head slightly to acknowledge Lucian.
"Thank you for the intervention."
?"I didn’t step in for you," Lucian said cleanly, his hands remaining near his belt.
"Sorel’s cluster was cluttering the transit lane. And his logic was offensive."
