Naruto: Kurotsuchi Mayuri
Chapter 485 - 381 : Everyone Behind Me!!
Nobody argued. Nobody moved fast enough.
The light along the seam’s exposed edge didn’t spread like fire. It spread like recognition — one point catching, then another, then a dozen, each one blooming the instant the last one steadied, until the whole visible length of the seam looked less like a wound and more like a row of eyes opening in sequence.
[Talent Card: Divergent Expression]
Reading targets: MULTIPLE, SIMULTANEOUS
Count: rising in real time — 4, then 7, then 11 —
Individual correlation: partial matches to newcomer signature, 60-80% each, no two identical
FLAG: Not copies. Not echoes. Distinct partial signatures, each incomplete in a different way.
Confidence: Cannot compute — target count still increasing.
"They’re not the same thing eleven times," Kushina said, chains snapping fully taut for the first time all Chapter. "They’re eleven different unfinished things."
"Move," Orochimaru said again, and this time it wasn’t a suggestion.
He had Kagetsu’s collar in one fist and the figure’s arm in the other before anyone else’s feet caught up to the order, hauling both of them back from the seam’s threshold in a single motion that cost him his footing and didn’t slow him down at all.
*
The newcomer hadn’t moved.
It stood exactly where it had been standing since it stepped through, watching the lights bloom along the seam’s edge the way a person watches weather they’ve seen a hundred times and stopped being afraid of decades ago.
"They’re not attacking," it said. Not raising its voice. Not needing to. "You should know that before you hurt yourselves running from something that isn’t chasing you."
"Forgive me," Danzo said, already moving, already flanking Hiruzen toward the corridor mouth without breaking stride, "if I don’t take that on faith from the thing that just told us there are more of these than we were counting."
"You didn’t ask me how many," the newcomer said. "You asked if I knew. I told you I didn’t. That’s not the same as there being an unknown number of hostiles. It’s the same as there being an unknown number of people who have been waiting a very long time to stop being unfinished."
Minato’s kunai didn’t lower. His voice did, flat and hard. "That’s not reassuring the way you think it is."
Kushina kept her chains between the group and the seam, walking backward instead of turning her back on it, eyes flicking across the multiplying lights like she was trying to count them and losing the count every time a new one bloomed. "Eleven becomes twelve becomes we stop being able to track any of them individually. Somebody give me a number where this stops mattering less than it does right now."
"There isn’t one," Hiruzen said. He hadn’t stopped moving either, but his voice had gone into the register Kagetsu recognized from Chapter 366 — the one that meant he was thinking three steps past what he was saying out loud. "Danzo. If this is a rate problem again, what’s the rate."
"Climbing," Danzo said. "Which is the only answer that matters."
The seam’s light kept blooming. Twelve. Fourteen.
And then, at the seventeenth point along the seam’s edge, something different happened.
The light didn’t just gather and steady the way the others had. It pushed — the peeled layers of the seam bowing outward at that single spot, straining like fabric under a hand pressed flat from the other side, and for the first time since the Chapter began the newcomer’s composure actually shifted.
"That one’s early," it said, and for the first time, it didn’t sound entirely calm. "They shouldn’t be able to do that yet. None of them should be strong enough to push."
"Define ’yet,’" Hiruzen said, already turning back toward it instead of continuing to retreat.
"I don’t have a clock for it," the newcomer said. "I have a sense of order. This is out of order."
*
The bowed section of the seam split.
Not peeled — split, a clean tear opening along a line that had never been part of the original two-layer separation, and through it came something that didn’t look built the way the boy or the figure or the shape had looked built.
It looked started. Half a shoulder. An arm that thinned to nothing past the elbow. A face with one eye finished and the socket of the other still smooth, blank, unclaimed. It didn’t walk through so much as it arrived at the threshold and stayed there, held half-in and half-out like something too incomplete to commit to a side.
[Talent Card: Divergent Expression]
Signature: UNIDENTIFIED (partial construct, seventeenth bloom)
Correlation to newcomer: 71%
Correlation to seam-entity: 8%
Correlation to figure/boy/shape/door composite: 4% (unclear which)
Structural completeness: approximately 40%.
FLAG: First-ever reading of an entity mid-formation rather than post-formation. No precedent for interpreting a signature this incomplete.
The half-formed thing’s one finished eye moved across the corridor — past Danzo, past Hiruzen, past Minato’s leveled kunai — and stopped on Kagetsu.
"You," it said. Half a voice. The consonants didn’t all land; some of the word simply wasn’t there yet, the way the arm wasn’t there past the elbow. "You’re — carrying — "
It didn’t finish the sentence.
Kushina’s chains snapped toward it on reflex, gold light flaring down their length, and stopped short of striking — not out of hesitation, Kagetsu realized, but because she genuinely didn’t know yet whether hitting it would help or make everything worse. "Someone tell me what happens if I hit that."
"You’d be hitting someone’s unfinished child," the newcomer said, quiet now, none of its earlier flatness left in it. "I’d ask you not to find out the rest experimentally."
Kushina didn’t lower the chains. But she didn’t strike either.
[He’s not talking to you,] the older-Kagetsu voice said inside Kagetsu, quiet, careful. [Or not only to you. Listen to what he’s reaching for.]
Kagetsu felt it before he understood it — a tug at the same place in his chest where the extraction had been working since Chapter 379, except this pull came from a completely different direction. Not toward the seam-entity’s composite signature. Toward this one. The half-formed one. The early one.
"He’s not reaching for the fragment," Kagetsu said out loud, voice tight. "He’s reaching for me."
*
The figure moved before anyone told it to — stepping half in front of Kagetsu, facial crack flaring bright gold for the first time since it went quiet at the start of the Chapter.
"Don’t," it said, to the half-formed thing, and its voice had none of its usual fear in it. This was something else. Recognition, maybe. Or guilt arriving early. "Whatever you think he’s carrying, it’s not yours to finish taking."
"It’s not his," the half-formed thing said, one syllable at a time, effortful. "It’s — mine. Started. Not — finished. He has the — piece that would have — "
The seam behind it bowed again. Harder.
"— completed me."
The newcomer’s composure broke fully for the first time.
"Stop," it said — to the half-formed thing, urgent in a way nothing about it had been urgent before. "You’re not strong enough to pull a completion through from outside. You’ll tear before it does."
"Already — tearing," the half-formed thing said, and smiled with the half of its face that had a mouth.
The seam’s seventeenth point split wider.
And the pull in Kagetsu’s chest — the new one, the one aimed at him specifically instead of at the fragment he carried — stopped being a tug and became, all at once, a demand.
Kagetsu’s knees buckled. Orochimaru caught him — again, the third time this arc, hands already in position before the fall finished starting — and felt something under his palms that hadn’t been there a heartbeat earlier: a second heartbeat, faint, out of rhythm with the first, beating from somewhere just beneath Kagetsu’s sternum that had no business having a pulse of its own.
"Kagetsu," Orochimaru said, low, controlled, the calm voice he used for things he refused to let become panic out loud. "Kagetsu, what is that."
Kagetsu didn’t answer.
Hiruzen was already moving toward them, and even Danzo had stopped watching the seam long enough to watch this instead — the first time all Chapter his attention had left the bigger, more countable threat for a single point of failure in front of him.
"That’s not the extraction," Hiruzen said, kneeling fast, one hand hovering just short of touching Kagetsu’s chest, like he’d learned better than to grab first and ask later. "The extraction’s been slow. Steady. This isn’t slow."
"No," the newcomer said, and for the first time it sounded like it was bracing for something rather than merely observing it. "This is completion. Someone finally has the missing piece close enough to reach."
The figure’s grip found Kagetsu’s shoulder, gold crack blazing now, voice cracking with it. "He doesn’t get to just take it. Not like this. Not without asking."
"He’s not asking," the newcomer said. "He’s seventeen Chapters ahead of asking. He’s dying."
He couldn’t.
Because for the first time since the wall-seal first cracked open in Chapter 336, something was answering from inside him that wasn’t the older Kagetsu’s voice at all — and it was using his own mouth to do it.
