Naruto: Kurotsuchi Mayuri
Chapter 480 - 376 : Both Of Us, Awake!!
Kagetsu woke up remembering a war he’d never fought.
Not metaphorically. Not as a figure of speech.
He was lying on the floor of Corridor Seven, Orochimaru’s hand braced under his shoulder blades, and somewhere behind his own eyes there was a memory of standing in a gold-lit space for thirty-six Chapters, watching the same three feet of wall-seal and counting the seconds by how long it took dust to settle after it didn’t move.
That memory had a texture. A weight. It felt exactly as real as anything that had happened to him yesterday.
It just hadn’t.
He could still feel the specific cold of that gold-lit space against skin that had never actually stood in it — a draft that didn’t exist anymore, from a room that had stopped being separate from him sometime in the last few minutes. He knew the exact number of times the older him had run a thumb along the edge of the wall-seal, testing for give that was never there. He knew what boredom felt like across thirty-six Chapters of waiting for a door that wouldn’t open. None of it belonged to the body currently lying on this floor. All of it was, somehow, already filed under things that had happened to him.
"Kagetsu." Orochimaru’s voice, close, controlled, doing the thing it always did where the fear only showed up as extra precision. "Nod if you can hear me."
He nodded. It worked. Both sets of instincts agreed on how to move his own neck, which was — he noted, with the same distant clinical interest Mayuri’s talent card had given him for every other impossible thing that had ever happened to his body — a genuinely useful sign.
"I’m here," he said, and his voice came out layered, two throats’ worth of resonance behind one mouth, before it settled into something closer to normal. "I’m — give me a second. There’s a lot of me right now."

The detached hand was gone.
Not vanished — reattached, resting at the end of his own wrist exactly where it should have been all along, fingers curled loose against the floor like it had never once belonged to anyone else. No seam. No scar. No sign it had spent four Chapters as its own independent entity, gripped by a version of him that no longer had a body separate enough to grip it with.
The figure was still holding the space where it used to be.
Its fingers were curled around nothing, frozen in the exact shape they’d held the wrist in a minute ago, like the hand leaving hadn’t registered yet as something the body was allowed to react to.
"It’s not there anymore," the figure said, staring at its own empty grip like it had lost something it hadn’t realized it was still counting on. "I was still holding it. I didn’t feel it go."
"Neither did I." Kagetsu flexed the fingers. All five worked. All five felt like his, in the uncomplicated way fingers were supposed to feel, which after four Chapters of the alternative was almost disorienting on its own. "That’s the first uncomplicated thing that’s happened to this hand since Chapter 359."
Kushina’s chains were still half-raised, but they weren’t pointed at him anymore. They’d dropped to something closer to ready-but-not-hostile, the same posture she used on storms she couldn’t do anything about yet.
"Are you you?" she asked. Not unkindly. Just directly, the way she asked everything.
Kagetsu thought about that longer than the question probably deserved.
"I remember being both of us," he said finally. "I remember thirty-six Chapters of watching a wall from the other side of it, and I remember every Chapter before that from this side. Neither memory feels borrowed. They both feel like mine, because they are mine now. But there’s only one of me making that sentence, so — yes. I think so. I think I’m still me. I just have more of me than I did an hour ago."
"That’s not reassuring," Minato said, kunai finally lowered but not sheathed.
"No," Kagetsu agreed. "It’s not supposed to be. It’s supposed to be true."
---
Orochimaru helped him upright and didn’t let go once he was there, hand still braced against his back, watching him the way he watched every experiment in its first minutes of stability — waiting to see if the stability was real or just the calm before a second, worse event.
"Test it," Orochimaru said. "Something specific. Something only one of you would know."
Kagetsu didn’t have to reach far.
"The older me spent the first six Chapters of his existence assuming he was hallucinating," he said. "He didn’t tell anyone that. He didn’t tell me that, either, out loud — I only know it because I remember deciding it privately, the way you remember deciding something you never said out loud to another living person." He looked down at his own hands again. "That’s not something Divergent Expression could have fed me secondhand. I didn’t get told. I remember living it."
Orochimaru’s grip eased, fractionally.
"That’ll do," he said.
Hiruzen crouched slightly, studying Kagetsu’s face with the same attention he’d been giving doorways and thresholds for two Chapters straight, finally aimed at something that wasn’t a wall.
"Does this mean he’s gone?" he asked. Not accusing. Careful. "The older you. Is there a version of this where you woke up and he simply isn’t in there anymore — used up, not merged?"
Kagetsu went still.
He hadn’t checked. He’d been too busy confirming his own hands worked to go looking for whether the other set of memories still had a voice attached to them, separate from his own, or whether they’d just become inert history — facts with no one left standing behind them.
He looked inward, the way Mayuri’s old habits had taught him to look at anything he didn’t fully understand yet.
There was a presence there.
Quiet. Familiar. Watching from somewhere just behind his own thoughts the way a person watches through a window they’re no longer allowed to open.
"Still here," said a voice that was and wasn’t his own, layered so far under the surface that no one else in the corridor could have heard it. "Didn’t say I’d disappear. Said I wouldn’t be the one who did. Turns out that just meant neither of us did — we’re both just occupying the same address now."
"He’s still here," Kagetsu said out loud, and something in his chest — right where the gold crack had opened — eased slightly, like a held breath finally let go. "I can hear him. He’s not gone. He’s just—"
"Quieter," the older-Kagetsu-voice supplied, dry even through the layering. "For now."
---
The figure hadn’t moved from its spot on the floor.
It was still staring at the space where the detached hand used to be, and its own facial crack — gold, unhealed, open since Chapter 354 — pulsed once, unprompted, in a rhythm that didn’t match anything currently happening in the room.
"You said someone’s been matching the cracks," Kushina said, turning to it directly, chains lowering the rest of the way now that the more immediate crisis had a name and a shape. "Before. You didn’t finish."
The figure’s expression did something complicated.
"I know," it said. "I remember what I was about to say."
"Then say it."
It opened its mouth.
The wall-seal — the gold seam, still shuddering in place since it had stopped closing partway through the last Chapter — chose that exact moment to shudder harder, a sound underneath it now that hadn’t been there before, low and structural, like something large shifting its weight on the other side of a door too thin to hold it. The light behind it changed color for the first time since it had turned gold three Chapters ago.
Not gold anymore.
Not the black that had heralded Black Zetsu, either.
Something in between — a color none of them had a name for, shifting slowly the way oil shifts on water, refusing to settle on being one thing or another — and the figure’s sentence died in its throat as every head in the corridor turned toward the seam at once.
Kushina’s chains snapped back up without her seeming to decide it. Orochimaru’s grip on Kagetsu’s shoulder tightened again, protective instinct overriding the all-clear he’d given thirty seconds earlier. Even the older-Kagetsu-voice, still settling into whatever quiet corner of Kagetsu’s mind it now occupied, went sharply, fully alert.
"That’s new," Danzo said, flat as ever, and for once nobody in the room disagreed with how much that single observation was carrying.
