Chapter 7: The Invasion VI – Naruto vs. Sasuke

The clearing was silent.

The distant sounds of the invasion had faded into nothing, muffled by the thick canopy of the forest. The evening light was fading, casting long shadows across the grass. The air was cool and still, holding its breath the way the two boys standing in the center of the clearing held theirs.

Naruto stood with his hands at his sides, his face blank, his eyes cold. His black outfit blended with the shadows around him. He looked like he belonged here, in the dark, in the quiet, in the space between one moment and the next.

Sasuke stood across from him, his Sharingan active, his body tense. The two tomoe in the red of his eyes, tracking Naruto's every movement, every breath, every flicker of muscle. His hand was on his kunai pouch. His weight was balanced, ready to move in any direction.

"I've been waiting for this," Sasuke said. His voice was quiet, but it carried across the clearing. "I've been thinking about it every day for the last month. About what it would be like to face you. About what it would be like to prove that I'm the strongest."

Naruto did not answer.

"You always talked about surpassing me," Sasuke continued. "You always said you were going to be the one to beat me. You said it in the academy. You said it in the Land of Waves. You said it during the exams." He paused. "And now here we are."

Naruto tilted his head. "You’re mistaken, it may have been in the academy but I did surpass you in the Land of Waves.”

Sasuke moved.

He crossed the distance between them in less than a heartbeat, his kunai already drawn, his Sharingan tracking Naruto's position. His strike was fast, precise, aimed at Naruto's throat.

Naruto was not there.

He had shifted to the left, just barely, and Sasuke's kunai passed through the space where his neck had been. Sasuke spun, his other hand already coming up, a second kunai aimed at Naruto's ribs.

Naruto blocked it with his forearm. The impact was solid. The blades clashed.

Sasuke pushed forward. Naruto stepped back. Sasuke pushed again. Naruto stepped back again.

"You're not fighting back," Sasuke said. His voice was tight with frustration. "Why aren't you fighting back?"

Naruto did not answer. He simply kept moving, kept dodging, kept avoiding.

Sasuke's strikes grew faster. More aggressive. His fists. His feet. His kunai. Each one aimed at a vital point. Each one missing by a fraction of an inch.

Naruto moved like water, flowing around the attacks, never quite committing, never quite countering.

Sakura watched from the edge of the clearing, her hands pressed against her chest, her heart pounding. She had seen Naruto fight before. She had seen him destroy enemies without hesitation. She had seen him kill. She had seen him almost kill Kiba in the preliminaries.

This was different.

He was not fighting. He was toying with Sasuke. He was letting Sasuke exhaust himself.

"Why?" Sakura whispered. "Why is he doing this?"

Pakkun sat beside her, his small eyes fixed on the fight. He did not answer.

Sasuke's breathing was growing heavier. His strikes were slowing. His chakra was running low. The Chidori had taken more out of him than he wanted to admit.

Naruto saw the opening. He moved.

His foot swept Sasuke's legs out from under him. Sasuke hit the ground hard, the breath driven from his lungs. Before he could recover, Naruto was on him, one knee pressed against his chest, one hand holding his wrist against the ground.

Sasuke struggled. He could not move.

"It's over," Naruto said. His voice was flat. "You lost."

Sasuke's Sharingan spun faster. His curse mark flared. The black flames spread across his neck, reaching toward his jaw.

"No," Sasuke said. "I'm not done yet."

Naruto looked at him. For a moment, something flickered behind his eyes. Then it was gone.

"Fine," Naruto said. "Have it your way."

He released Sasuke. He stepped back. He walked to the edge of the clearing.

Sasuke pushed himself to his feet, breathing hard, his curse mark still active. He looked at Naruto. Confusion was visible on his face.

"What are you doing?" Sasuke asked.

Naruto did not answer. He turned his back on Sasuke. He walked toward Sakura.

Sasuke stood in the center of the clearing, his curse mark fading, his Sharingan deactivating. He did not understand what had just happened. He had not won. Naruto had let him win.

He shook his head. He did not have time to think about it. He had to go. He had to find Gaara.

He ran.

Naruto stopped in front of Sakura. Her eyes were wide, confused.

"Why did you do that?" she asked. "You could have beaten him. You could have stopped him. Why did you let him go?"

Naruto looked at her. His face was blank. But something behind his eyes was soft. Not cold. Not calculating. Just... present.

"Because he needed to win," Naruto said. "He needed to believe that he could. He needed to prove something to himself."

Sakura shook her head. "That doesn't make sense."

"It doesn't have to."

Sakura looked at the direction Sasuke had gone. "He's going to get himself killed. He's wounded. Sasuke can't beat him like this."

"No," Naruto agreed. "He can't."

"Then why?"

Naruto stepped closer. His hand came up. His fingers brushed Sakura's cheek.

"Because he needs to learn," Naruto said. "He needs to know that he can't do everything on his own. He needs to know that he can't just run away and expect to be fine. And the only way he's going to learn that is by failing."

Sakura's breath caught. She was close to him. She could feel the warmth of his hand on her face.

"And what about me?" she asked. "What am I supposed to learn?"

Naruto smiled. It was a small smile, but it was real.

"You've already learned enough," he said.

He leaned in. He kissed her.

Her eyes closed. Her hands came up to his chest, pressing against the fabric of his black shirt. She kissed him back. Her lips were soft. His were firm. It was not like the hospital room. It was not awkward. It was not hesitant.

It was certain.

Pakkun cleared his throat.

"Excuse me," he said. "I hate to interrupt, but we do have a mission."

Sakura pulled back, her face flushed. She looked at Pakkun, then at Naruto, then back at Pakkun.

"Sorry," she said. "We were just..."

"Kissing," Pakkun said flatly. "I know what kissing looks like. I'm a dog, not a rock."

Sakura's face went even redder.

Naruto's smile did not waver. He looked at Pakkun with the same calm, unbothered expression he always wore.

"Since when have you two been dating?" Pakkun asked.

"We're not," Sakura said quickly. "We're not dating. We're just..."

"Kissing," Naruto said. "She said it."

Sakura shot him a look. He did not react.

Pakkun sighed. "This is above my pay grade. Kakashi didn't say anything about this in the briefing."

"He didn't need to," Naruto said. “He must mind his own business.”

Pakkun looked at him. His small eyes were surprisingly sharp. "Why didn't you just defeat Sasuke yourself? You could have ended it. You could have stopped him right there. You could have brought him back to the village like Kakashi ordered."

Naruto was silent for a moment. His smile faded. His face went blank again.

"Because if I had defeated him," Naruto said, "he would have kept running. He would have kept fighting. He would have kept trying to prove something he doesn't need to prove." He paused. "This way, he learns. Gaara will defeat him. He'll be humbled. He'll realize that he can't do everything on his own."

Sakura looked at him. "And if Gaara kills him?"

Naruto met her eyes. "He won't. Gaara's not going to kill him. He's going to beat him. There's a difference."

Sakura did not look convinced. But she did not argue.

Pakkun shook his head. "You're playing a dangerous game, kid."

Naruto shrugged. "I know."

Pakkun looked at the direction Sasuke had gone. "He's getting further away. If we're going to catch up, we need to move."

Naruto nodded. He looked at Sakura. "Ready?"

Sakura took a breath. She steadied herself. She nodded.

"Yeah," she said. "I'm ready."

Naruto turned. He started running. Sakura followed. Pakkun followed.

Behind them, the clearing was empty. The only evidence that anything had happened was the churned earth and the fading scent of chakra.

Ahead of them, Sasuke was running. Ahead of him, Gaara was waiting.
