Chapter 999: [999] : The Six Races

"Humans were weak—everyone above them knew it, and most of them never let us forget it," the king said. "That contempt is what set everything in motion."

"The Dragon race was born with the highest tier of innate magic—commanding forces that no other race could naturally access. The spirit race was different. Their power wasn’t raw strength. It was foresight, and something more specific: the ability to act as a natural check against the gods."

Shin said nothing. He was listening carefully now.

"The gods—the divine race—were never truly independent. They were instruments. The Creator God built this world, and when it stepped back from direct management, it appointed the gods to govern in its absence. They were handed authority over the laws of this world. Rules, causality, the frameworks that everything else operates within. That’s what made them untouchable."

He paused.

"So the Creator God gave the spirit race God-Slaying Magic. A hard counter. And it gave the dragon race something parallel—law-breaking magic, specifically shaped to resist divine authority. Two leashes on the gods, held by two different races. The demons and monsters, as I said, were eventually absorbed by humans and stopped being a factor."

Shin sat with that for a moment.

’The gods aren’t the top of the chain. They never were. They’re administrators—powerful ones, but administrators. The real variable is whatever the Creator God actually is, and whether it’s still paying attention.’

He looked at the king.

"You’ve been thinking about this from the wrong angle," he said. "You keep trying to figure out why the spirits died. But you’re treating it as an isolated event—something that happened to the spirit race on its own."

The king frowned.

"It wasn’t isolated," Shin continued. "Think about what you just told me. The spirits had the one power that kept the gods in check. The dragons had the other. Those two facts don’t sit next to each other by accident."

He leaned forward slightly.

"What happens if the gods and the dragons make a deal? The dragons remove the spirit threat—the one thing that can actually stop divine authority—and the gods look the other way while the dragons consolidate their own position. Both sides get rid of their biggest problem and come out stronger. It’s straightforward."

The king stared at him.

"You’re saying they worked together," he said slowly.

"I’m saying the math points that way. The spirits disappear suddenly, completely, across an entire race—that’s not a plague or a natural decline. That’s something deliberate. And the Spirit King vanishing at the same time means he either went to fight it or went to warn someone." Shin paused. "Either way, the spirit race wasn’t destroyed. It was dismantled. By something with enough authority and enough power to do it quietly."

The king was quiet for a long moment.

"I’ve spent years going through my wife’s records," he said finally. "Every story she ever wrote down, everything she told me about the spirit realm. I never found a clean explanation." He looked at Shin with an expression that was somewhere between relief and grief. "You’ve been in this conversation for twenty minutes."

"I’ve seen a lot of worlds," Shin said simply.

He stood up and turned toward the bier.

"That’s enough for now. I can theorize later. Right now, there’s something more important."

He looked at the flowers, the careful arrangement, the woman who had been lying there for eleven years while a king kept her room exactly the way she’d left it.

"Step back," he said. "All of you."

The room went quiet.

Shin closed his eyes and let the Rinnegan open—that slow, wheeling shift of perception, the one that let him see the threads connecting living things to the world they’d left behind.

"Edo Tensei."

The air in the room changed. A subtle shift in pressure, like a door opening somewhere nearby that shouldn’t have had a door.

The woman on the bier moved.

Color returned to her skin. Her chest rose. Her hands, which had been still for eleven years, shifted almost imperceptibly against the cloth beneath them.

Alice didn’t wait. She crossed the room in two steps and wrapped her arms around her mother before anyone could say a word. She wasn’t crying—not yet—just holding on, her face pressed against her mother’s shoulder, her whole body locked against the realization that the warmth was real.

Then she pulled back and looked at her mother’s face.

Her mother’s eyes were open.

Empty.

Alice’s expression held for exactly one second before it broke.

Shin had already seen it—the moment Edo Tensei had completed and the soul hadn’t followed. He’d noticed the difference immediately. The technique had found the body, rebuilt it, restarted it. But when it had reached for the consciousness, for the person—it had found nothing. Something was holding her soul in place, somewhere it wasn’t supposed to be.

’Someone put a lock on it,’ he thought. ’Deliberately.’
