My Superpower Leads Me to Murderers
Chapter 424: Then I’ll Commit the Crime
Chapter 424: Chapter 424: Then I’ll Commit the Crime
Having specific names and addresses made the investigation incredibly efficient.
Soon, Sean Hughes and his team had identified the areas where the robbers were most active and spent the majority of their time, allowing them to roughly map out their route.
However, to get more precise answers, they would have to catch the culprits and interrogate them thoroughly.
As Sean Hughes was looking at the information at hand and wondering about his next move, a junior officer came over. "Captain Hughes," he said, "Gary Dawson cracked. He said he’s willing to talk, but he’s specifically asking to see you."
The officers hadn’t even really started the interrogation—they just told him the police had arrested his wife, who had been packing to flee and had no intention of rescuing him.
Gary Dawson, who had been stubbornly tight-lipped, seemed to deflate. He lowered his head and fell silent for a long moment. In the end, he said he had something to tell them, but he would only speak to Sean Hughes.
After that, Gary Dawson clammed up, making it clear he wouldn’t cooperate with anyone but the man he’d named.
The junior officer had no choice but to hurry over and get Sean Hughes.
It was rare for one of them to be willing to talk. They couldn’t miss this opportunity.
"Alright, I’ll go check it out now." Sean Hughes wasted no time. He gathered the information he had just been reviewing and hurried to the interrogation room.
In the interrogation room, Gary Dawson sat with his head hung low. The overhead light hit his hair, casting his expression in an even deeper gloom.
"I hear you asked for me by name. You’d better actually be ready to talk. Otherwise, wasting police time will have consequences you can’t bear." Sean Hughes placed the file on the desk, his voice growing colder.
Gary Dawson’s head sank even lower, and a long silence settled over the interrogation room.
Just as Sean Hughes was about to break the silence, Gary Dawson’s hoarse voice cut in. "Is she really planning to abandon me and leave?"
His first question wasn’t about anything else—it was about whether his wife was truly abandoning him to save herself.
Sean Hughes raised an eyebrow in surprise. ’A man pining for his love? He really doesn’t look the type.’
"That’s right. Your wife was with a younger man, and they looked very close.
One of them stayed behind to deal with the children, while the other went to pack their valuables. The getaway car was waiting in the yard. If we hadn’t gotten there when we did, they would have been long gone." Sean Hughes didn’t bother hiding the details. This information wasn’t classified, and on the contrary, used skillfully, it could have an unexpected effect.
For instance, the foul expression now twisting Gary Dawson’s face and the way he clenched his jaw in fury.
’Damn it, how dare they!’
’I’ve been holding out, refusing to say a word, all because I was worried about her getting caught!’
’I can’t believe it. From start to finish, they never planned on saving me. They were just trying to figure out how to ditch this ’burden’!’
’It’s true the Yorke Family always looked down on me. But I always worked hard, whether it was running the business or taking care of the family. I poured my heart and soul into everything.’
’So why, when it came down to it, was their first thought to run, not to rescue me?’
The more he thought about it, the darker Gary Dawson’s expression grew.
He felt utterly abandoned—abandoned by the wife he had always trusted and loved.
Besides, he knew Ms. Yorke had other lovers, too.
’It was just that they never flaunted it in his face, and besides, he wasn’t exactly a saint himself, so he’d let it slide.’
’But I swear, if our roles were reversed, my first thought would be how to get her out, not to pack up and leave her in the dust!’
"Oh, right. Your wife seems convinced you’re the one who snitched. She’s in another interrogation room, cursing you nonstop. Want to see the surveillance video? We can pull it up for you," Sean Hughes added, as if the blow hadn’t landed hard enough.
Gary Dawson’s already dark expression turned downright foul at these words.
After another long moment, Gary Dawson took a deep breath. "Go ahead, ask. Whatever you want to know, I’ll tell you."
"She thinks I’m the one who snitched? Fine! Then I’ll just have to prove her right!"
’Ever since he found out Ms. Yorke had also been arrested, Gary Dawson knew there was no getting out for him.’
’Considering everything he’d done, it would be a miracle if he avoided the death penalty when the sentence was handed down.’
’If that’s the case, he might as well own the label Ms. Yorke had slapped on him and spill everything he knew!’
’They could go to prison together, face the firing squad together. At least their marriage wouldn’t have been for nothing!’
As he thought this, Gary Dawson’s expression twisted into a savage sneer, and his gaze on Sean Hughes grew feverish.
"Tell me about the route the Yorke Family operates. Are you familiar with it?" Looking at his notes, Sean Hughes picked the most critical question and asked it.
Gary Dawson looked at Sean Hughes, his expression a mixture of surprise and displeasure.
’He really hadn’t expected the police to be so fast. To think they’d already found out about the route.’
’He had been hoping to use that information to bargain for a reduced sentence if Sean Hughes hadn’t brought it up.’
’Damn it! If I’d known this was going to happen, I wouldn’t have been so stubborn from the start. I should have just spilled everything I knew!’
Gary Dawson was seething with regret, but it was too late. He had missed his best chance. All he could do now was answer Sean Hughes’s questions and try to salvage what he could.
"That route... my father-in-law scouted it out over a decade ago. It’s mountainous and heavily forested. He arranged for some dedicated freight drivers to run that road exclusively, with other teams scattered along the way."
"If they come across a police checkpoint, they take the cargo, get out of the vehicle, and hide in designated spots. Once the police leave, they load the cargo back on and continue."
"They were extremely cautious, and with enough lookouts, they could almost always evade patrols in advance. Over time, they developed a route that was both well-hidden and well-known to them."
Boss Yorke had also paid off some of the restaurants and residents along the route. More or less all of them had received money or gifts from him.
Following a ’you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours’ principle, the people who received these gifts wouldn’t report them to the police. Sometimes, they’d even help hide the cargo.
"Did the nearby residents never think of calling the police about this kind of criminal activity? Don’t they know they’ll be arrested too if they get involved and are discovered?" Sean Hughes asked, a hint of confusion on his face.
Gary Dawson nonchalantly picked his nose, looking every bit the brazen hooligan.
"What good would calling the cops do? You think you can catch every last one of them in one go?"
"As long as one person gets away, what do you think happens to the snitch?"
