Chapter 412: Chapter 412: Stubborn Kai Thorne

Kai Thorne slammed his hand on the table. His expression was twisted with fury, and he glared at the two people sitting across from him.

If Eliza Lynch ever found out, the rest of his life would be completely ruined!

His current life, his marriage, even his future—it would all be utterly destroyed.

He absolutely could not let that happen!

Zoe Sawyer crossed her arms, watching the flustered Kai Thorne with a deadpan expression. "Eliza Lynch is a victim in this, too," she said coldly. "She has a right to know the truth.

What you should be doing right now is telling the police the whole story, not beating around the bush and wasting our time.

Do you have any idea how worried Eliza was when she called the police? She was afraid you’d gotten mixed up in a murder case and ruined your life.

And you? You’re sitting here refusing to cooperate because of your own dirty little secrets, leaving your wife and child terrified in the waiting room."

Zoe Sawyer’s words made Kai Thorne’s face flush red. He wanted to defend himself, but the words caught in his throat, and he swallowed them back down.

"Confess and be treated with leniency; resist and be met with severity. Don’t underestimate our investigative abilities. Whatever you’ve done, we have ways of finding the evidence.

There’s a big difference between you telling us yourself and us finding out on our own. The sentencing won’t be the same," Zoe Sawyer said, her voice laced with a warning as she looked at Kai Thorne’s feigned innocence.

Kai Thorne’s heart skipped a beat. A wave of unease washed over him. Every time he thought about speaking up, he remembered what he had done.

’No, I can’t tell them!’

’If I really confess, then I’ll be the one who’s truly ruined!’

"I don’t know anything. Isn’t it your job as the police to investigate the truth? Why are you asking me? Don’t tell me you’re not capable and are just trying to get this over with?" Kai Thorne swallowed hard, continuing to stonewall them.

Heath Hale patted Zoe Sawyer’s arm, stopping her from saying more. He then stood up and looked at the slightly pale Kai Thorne. "Alright. If that’s how you want it, we’ll do it your way.

Let’s go. Have the others prep to investigate the scene and Marcus Thompson’s body. We’ll lay the truth out for Mr. Thorne then and let him accept the inevitable."

’I’d like to see just what truth is so unspeakable,’ he thought.

As Zoe Sawyer, Heath Hale, and the recording officer behind them left, Kai Thorne’s expression completely darkened.

He stopped shaking his leg, stopped picking his nails and tearing at the skin on his hands. His face was grim as he lowered his head and stared at the table in front of him.

His mind couldn’t stop replaying the things he had done.

’Did I leave any traces?’

’I don’t think so. I even made a point to clean up any suspicious areas nearby. There shouldn’t be any problems.’

’Even if they investigate, the most they’ll find is evidence that I was a victim, too.’

’I, Kai Thorne, am a pitiful and innocent man! I was just trying to connect with my brother, but I was targeted.’

’Marcus Thompson attacked me first. He wanted to kill me, take my place, and steal my wife and daughter.’

’I was just acting in self-defense. At worst, it was excessive self-defense.’

’Everything else has absolutely nothing to do with me!’

After running through the events from start to finish, Kai Thorne’s pounding heart began to calm.

He finally couldn’t help but let out a soft sigh of relief.

’Go ahead and investigate,’ he thought. ’You won’t find anything anyway.’

Zoe Sawyer and Heath Hale hadn’t gone far. After leaving the room, they stood by the observation window, watching Kai Thorne’s every move.

Naturally, they had a crystal-clear view of his expression.

"He’s definitely hiding something. This ’truth’ is probably the real reason Marcus Thompson wanted to kill him." Heath Hale leaned on the table with both hands, his eyes fixed on Kai Thorne inside.

’What could it be?’

Their colleagues at the station hadn’t had a chance to investigate the social connection between the two men yet, but that was okay. They had a secret weapon on their side.

As long as Zoe Sawyer could get a clue from the Door, they could focus their efforts and save a ton of time!

"The victim’s body has been sent to the medical examiner, but it’ll still take some time to fully confirm his identity.

Zoe, we’re going to have to rely on you for what’s next." Heath Hale straightened up, pulled his gaze away from Kai Thorne, and turned to Zoe beside him.

"Don’t worry, I know what to do." Zoe Sawyer nodded, accepting the task.

The two didn’t waste any time. They instructed the young officer standing guard at the door to notify them immediately if Kai Thorne made any unusual movements.

After giving their instructions, Zoe Sawyer and Heath Hale hurried back to their office.

Just as they returned, they saw Evan Keller and his team, who were back from making an arrest.

"What’s the big rush, you two?" Evan Keller asked, greeting them with a wave from his desk as he watched the hurried pair.

He knew perfectly well they were working a case, though.

"We’ve got a tight-lipped suspect who won’t say a thing. To crack the case quickly, I’m going to ask the Door for help," Zoe Sawyer explained briefly before striding toward the Door.

Heath Hale followed behind her, pausing slightly as he passed Evan Keller’s desk. "Did it go smoothly on the way back? You guys didn’t run into any trouble?"

"Don’t worry. We caught them completely off guard. Even if they had a backup plan, they wouldn’t have had time to react." Evan Keller shrugged nonchalantly. "Not that they had one in the first place."

It was a surprise raid, and we were fully equipped and had the numbers.

Evan Keller and his team had rounded them all up in one fell swoop. Now, the only one left was the "boss" they kept talking about.

After discovering the two lookouts staking out the station, the chief had their phone signals and bank accounts secretly monitored.

Through their call logs and transaction records, the police had followed a winding trail of clues and significantly narrowed down the search.

A dedicated team was also keeping an eye on them; if they made any strange moves, officers would move in and detain them immediately.

Now, Evan Keller was just waiting for Zoe Sawyer to finish her current case so she could help identify who this group’s boss was.

Once they had a positive ID, they could move in and make the arrest.

"Good work. I’m going to go help her," Heath Hale said, clapping Evan Keller on the shoulder and then pointing toward Zoe Sawyer.

Evan Keller waved him off. "Go on. Solve this case quickly, then come help me with my interrogation."

Heath Hale didn’t say anything more, just raised a hand in acknowledgement.

Meanwhile, Zoe Sawyer took the file Officer Lee promptly handed her and flipped through it, memorizing the address of the crime scene and the estimated time of death.

She gripped the doorknob and closed her eyes, focusing her thoughts.

With a clear target and location in mind, a familiar sensation soon flowed from the doorknob into her palm.

"It’s coming!"
