In the currently chaotic Charldo Harbor, there are still quiet areas. The area outside the large database that manages and stores Calculating Pearl data information is exceptionally stable.
It’s almost like seeing a ghost. Despite the fact that all machines with Calculating Pearls in the entire city have lost control, this area, which should be considered the core of the data network, remains as quiet as a chicken, with no rampaging walking machines coming here. Even the faucets on both sides of the street, controlled by Calculating Pearls, are still dutifully performing their tasks.
However, this quiet amidst chaos makes this place seem rather odd.
Especially for those about to enter and carry out special missions, such a quiet area seems more like a cunning beast with its bloody mouth wide open, awaiting the unsuspecting prey to step inside. The disguise of silence is merely to avoid scaring away the timid ones.
Ruyi, chewing on hard candy, wears a mechanic’s coat and dons a halfling’s signature mechanical goggles, dressed like a miniature pilot, looking exceedingly cool.
She twirls a small-issue pistol in her hand, occasionally ejecting the magazine, professionally glancing at the bullets before inserting it back, and after holstering her pistol, she takes out her oddly-shaped Adventure Assistant, furiously tapping on it.
That’s a Tetris game she "coded" for herself.
It’s a feedback of her learning from Old Flywheel to arrange Spiritual Energy Factors; being able to make this type of puzzle game herself shows that Ruyi is now ready to master the field of Calculating Pearl logic programming.
This little figure couldn’t stay calm, just like a truly active halfling rather than a foreigner.
Besides her, there are about fifty halfling players preparing to execute their missions. These are all the halflings among the players right now, two-thirds of whom are halfling assassins, with the remaining third including mechanics, psychics, doctors, and other professions.
The diversity of professions seems adequate, but compared to the total of over 6000 players, less than one percent is quite disheartening.
However, considering that the racial talents of halflings aren’t particularly outstanding among available races, coupled with combat debuffs, in an absolutely realistic game, players who persist in playing halflings with such negative buffs are surely true lovers of the "small stature" image.
"Mentor, what do you think Sir Murphy is doing right now?"
While waiting, the bored Ruyi softly asked the expressionless Old Flywheel standing in front of her.
This interrupted Old Flywheel’s sentimental musings about the "scenery" of his hometown tonight. The mechanical goggles on his eyes rotated twice, allowing him to see clearly in the dark, and finally, when he saw a Transylvania-style carriage turning around the street corner, Old Flywheel whispered:
"Like Lord Morphy, a remarkable leader is likely engaged in something significant that will impact the continental situation; just like us followers are also entrusted with important missions tonight.
All the city’s machines have lost control. If we cannot deal with this chaos in the shortest time, even if Charldo Harbor overcomes tonight’s crisis, this city will lose vitality due to internal destruction from the grassroots.
My disciple, the future of the halflings rests on our shoulders at this moment."
This NPC’s manner of speaking made Ruyi pucker her lips; an otherworldly hacker complained inwardly that when she first knew Old Flywheel, this guy was a very prestigious master of heretical engineering who would challenge everything, but has now been "tamed" by Sir Murphy, becoming someone who refers to himself as a "follower" insect.
Is this the pull of the main storyline NPC?
Makes these clearly hard-to-deal-with guys as obedient as chickens. Hmm, maybe this is the legendary "charisma"?
"Someone’s coming!"
The halfling assassin players quickly noticed the approaching carriage, and these guys immediately readied themselves for battle.
However, most of them are newbies who entered the game in the late Black Disaster stage, being weaker in combat ability and gear. Thus, backed by the resourceful Silver Moon Group, armored Ruyi was already the best-equipped and most significant among the halfling players.
She barely qualified as an old player and was "enlisted" in the real world as a legitimate "professional," thus having a comprehensive understanding of the various forces in the game. The sight of the carriage from Transia Embassy coming over, escorted by NPC winged cavalry from the Mountain People, made it clear they are "friendly forces."
Thus, Ruyi waved, encouraging fellow halfling players not to panic.
She then followed Old Flywheel forward, standing at the street corner waiting for these folks. The carriage soon stopped ahead, and when the door of Professor Malcolm’s dedicated carriage opened, a dozen fully armed halfling mechanics jumped out, leaving Ruyi stunned.
Wow!
Although everyone was short and occupied little space, how on earth did they manage to squeeze so many people in such a narrow space?
Just when Ruyi was ridiculing the carriage for being a terrifying Barret-style vehicle, Old Flywheel had already stepped forward, reaching out to the elderly halfling with a mechanical cane standing before him, his tone filled with strong nostalgia and complexity, softly saying:
"Minkus, long time no see. Look at you now, just like a shaky old man!"
