Chapter 169: The Higher Castes

The first warning came from the central sector when an Iron Legion observer reported that several newly landed Vraxith pods had survived direct hits from anti-aircraft guns.

By the time the footage reached Noah in the command center, one of those pods had already split open beside a forward strongpoint.

The creature emerging from it was almost three meters tall. Layered armor covered its chest and head, while four heavy limbs carried it forward with enough speed that the nearest goblins barely had time to redirect their weapons.

Rifles opened first, sending a concentrated volley into the creature’s chest. The rounds struck its frontal armor and produced little visible effect, forcing the defenders to bring a machine gun onto the same target.

The Vraxith continued moving through the fire as pieces of its outer plating finally began breaking away. One of its upper limbs opened along the forearm and launched several hardened projectiles into the trench.

Two goblins disappeared beneath the impacts while another crew shifted its machine gun toward the creature’s exposed side. A burst caught it along the flank and tore through one of the joints connecting its rear leg.

The organism staggered but continued dragging itself toward the trench. Sustained fire eventually ripped through the softer tissue beneath its upper armor and brought it down only a short distance from the defenders.

The tactical officer beside Noah enlarged the recording. "Central command is calling it a Praetorian."

Noah watched another large pod strike the ground behind the first. "Tell them to keep the designation."

The second shell opened differently from the first. Something much heavier pushed through the torn biological casing and immediately began moving toward the strongpoint.

The new organism stayed low to the ground, supported by six thick limbs beneath a body covered in overlapping plates. Its front resembled a moving wall of biological armor, with only small gaps visible between the hardened sections.

Machine guns fired before it reached the nearest barricade. Most of the rounds flattened against the layered plating or disappeared into spaces too narrow to slow the creature.

A field gun struck its right side and tore away part of one limb. The creature stumbled, recovered, and slammed into the defensive wall hard enough to throw broken concrete across the trench behind it.

"Breaker," one of the analysts said.

Noah watched the creature prepare for another impact and accepted the designation without comment. The name described exactly what it had been bred to do.

A second impact cracked the barrier and opened a visible gap near the center.

Praetorians emerged behind the Breaker while ordinary Vraxith spread outward and forced the defenders to divide their fire.

The local commander reacted quickly and shifted two field guns toward the breach. The first shell hit the Breaker at close range and forced its body backward against the shattered barrier.

The second shell tore open its upper body before the Praetorians could fully enter the position. One of the elite organisms still reached the damaged wall, where concentrated machine-gun fire caught it as it attempted to climb through.

Another Breaker appeared on the left side of the strongpoint. The commander requested artillery support as soon as he realized his remaining field guns would not be able to engage both directions effectively.

Noah approved the request, and Ember Legion batteries several kilometers behind the position began firing. Their first coordinated salvo landed across the Vraxith approach before the Breaker reached the outer barricade.

One Praetorian disappeared beneath the explosions while the second Breaker survived long enough to continue forward. Another shell struck behind its frontal plates and finally brought the creature down against the damaged wall.

The goblins retained the strongpoint after several minutes of close fighting. Their ammunition display updated immediately afterward and showed how much heavy fire had been required to stop only a small number of the new organisms.

Noah changed feeds and opened the latest northern report. A reconnaissance aircraft had located a massive Vraxith creature several kilometers behind the nearest ground formations.

The organism was broad and almost completely stationary, with thick limbs buried deeply into the soil. A long hollow structure slowly rose from its back and angled toward the nearest railway facilities.

The first projectile launched before the aircraft finished transmitting the image. It crossed several kilometers in seconds and struck beside a railway platform.

The explosion destroyed two parked trucks and tore apart a section of track near the loading area. A second projectile landed farther south moments later and cratered a road that had previously been considered safely behind the fighting.

"Range?" Noah asked.

"Still estimating," a Khelron artillery officer answered. "At least several times farther than the earlier organisms."

The creature fired again while the artillery staff worked. This projectile struck near a rail bridge and damaged the approach road badly enough to force traffic to stop.

Green Legion units immediately began dispersing from exposed staging areas. Convoys were divided into smaller groups while stationary vehicle concentrations were moved away from known firing lanes.

The northern commander sent the new designation several minutes later. The organism would be called a Siege Crawler, and the first targets it selected already revealed its intended battlefield role.

Railway stations, road junctions, fuel areas, artillery positions, and repair sites began appearing on the target reports. The Vraxith were using these organisms to reach beyond the forward troops and disrupt the logistics supporting them.

A Green Legion convoy changed route shortly before another organic shell struck the road ahead. The vehicles disappeared beneath tree cover and continued in smaller groups instead of remaining in one long column.

Another alert reached Noah before the northern staff had finished adjusting its traffic plans. Eastern air defense had detected a large organism descending through the clouds.

The first image showed a wide-winged Vraxith creature larger than any atmospheric organism the defenders had fought so far. Heavy armor covered most of its body, while several smaller flyers remained attached beneath it during the descent.

Three anti-aircraft batteries opened fire as soon as the creature entered their engagement zone. Explosions surrounded it and tore part of one wing, yet the organism remained airborne.

The creature turned toward the nearest battery and released several heavy biological projectiles. The first missed the emplacement, while the second struck close enough to bury part of the position beneath soil and shattered equipment.

The third projectile destroyed the battery’s rangefinding equipment. Its crew continued firing through visual correction while another gun farther south joined the engagement.

Repeated hits finally tore through the damaged wing and forced the organism downward. It crashed beyond the ridge, leaving a trail of smoke and biological debris behind it.

Two more large flyers were already approaching the same region. Khelron intelligence assigned the caste a new designation after reviewing the first engagement.

The organisms became known as Sky Tyrants. Their size, durability, and ability to carry smaller flyers made them far more dangerous than the creatures that had dominated the earlier atmospheric attacks.

Noah opened the eastern command channel as the next Sky Tyrant crossed into range. "Do not engage each one separately. Concentrate batteries."

The Stone Legion commander answered immediately. "We’re already shifting fire."

"Keep your guns dispersed."

"Understood."

The next Sky Tyrant survived long enough to release the smaller flyers beneath its body.

Those organisms separated into several groups and turned toward different anti-aircraft positions while the larger creature continued drawing the heaviest fire.

The Vraxith were no longer relying on simple mass attacks. Different biological castes were beginning to support one another in deliberate combinations.

A new report from the central front demonstrated the same change on the ground.

Ordinary Vraxith rushed an Iron Legion position first and forced several machine guns to reveal themselves.

Praetorians advanced behind the initial assault through broken terrain while a Breaker moved directly toward the strongest portion of the barricade. The goblins destroyed the ordinary warriors and wounded one of the Praetorians before the heavier creature reached the wall.

Its first impact opened several cracks across the concrete. The second tore an entire section inward and created enough space for Vraxith warriors to begin pouring through.

The local commander ordered a fallback before the defenders could be surrounded inside the position. Machine-gun crews remained long enough to cover the last infantry squads crossing the rear trench.

Engineers attempted to recover a damaged field gun during the withdrawal. Vraxith projectiles began landing around them before the towing vehicle could reach the weapon, so the crew removed the breech mechanism and abandoned the gun.

The strongpoint disappeared from the tactical network several minutes later. Noah watched the surviving troops reach the next prepared position before looking toward the ground the Vraxith had taken.

Halden stood beside him. "First one we’ve lost completely."

Noah enlarged the markers representing the withdrawing company. "Thankfully the unit got out."

The governor studied the same display and nodded. The Vraxith had taken the position, while most of the defenders remained available for the next line.

Another withdrawal request arrived from the north shortly afterward. Siege Crawlers had struck the same road four times, leaving the outpost at its end increasingly difficult to supply.

Noah approved the movement and allowed the Green Legion to abandon the position. The troops removed their radios, wounded soldiers, remaining heavy ammunition, and everything else they could carry before leaving.

Artillery farther behind the outpost covered their movement. When the Vraxith finally reached the trenches, they found abandoned fighting positions and equipment that had already been rendered unusable.

Noah shifted his attention east, where Stone Legion was facing several Praetorians below one of the ridges. The creatures used gullies and uneven terrain to approach while ordinary Vraxith climbed openly toward the defensive line.

The goblins initially concentrated too much fire on the exposed swarm. Observers corrected the targeting once the Praetorians reached the lower slopes.

Mortar shells landed behind the elite organisms while machine guns swept their flanks. One Praetorian fell under concentrated fire, and another reached the first trench before a field gun fired into it from less than a hundred meters away.

The explosion destroyed part of the fortification along with the creature. Another Praetorian continued climbing and forced the ridge commander to request permission to abandon the lowest trench system.

Noah approved the withdrawal before the remaining troops could be trapped against the slope. The defenders moved upward toward stronger fortifications near the crest and left mines and prepared explosive charges behind them.

The pursuing Vraxith triggered the first detonation several minutes later. Smoke and soil covered the lower slope while Stone Legion continued firing from higher positions.

The ridge remained under goblin control, although the defenders now occupied a shorter line near the top. That same pattern soon began appearing in other sectors.

Breakers forced additional heavy weapons into action whenever they reached prepared barricades. Siege Crawlers struck supply routes and rear positions, while Sky Tyrants tanks concentrated anti-aircraft fire.

Praetorians survived ordinary rifle fire long enough to reach positions earlier Vraxith could not approach. The defenders were still killing them, although every successful engagement consumed far more heavy ammunition than the previous waves had required.

Noah opened a direct channel to Varek. The expenditure figures from multiple sectors were climbing fast enough that he wanted a consolidated report instead of separate requests.

"How quickly is heavy ammunition falling?"

"The numbers are quickly dwindling."

"Give me specifics."

"Central artillery expenditure is almost fifty percent above the previous rate. Eastern anti-aircraft consumption is climbing faster."

Noah opened the logistics screen and examined the available deliveries. "Prioritize heavy shells to units facing Breakers and Siege Crawlers."

"Already doing it."

"Do not waste field guns on ordinary warriors unless the position is in danger."

"Understood."

A new alert interrupted the exchange before Noah could continue. Khelron intelligence had identified another unusual organism inside one of the larger central landing zones.

The reconnaissance feed showed a swollen Vraxith creature surrounded by several heavily armored guards. It remained behind the main fighting while nearby formations shifted with unusual precision.

One Siege Crawler stopped firing seconds before Praetorians advanced. A group of aerial organisms attacked an anti-aircraft position at nearly the same time, while ordinary Vraxith altered direction before the goblins could reposition.

The analysts tracked several similar actions and reached the same conclusion. The creature appeared to be coordinating operations across a much larger area than the command organisms encountered earlier.

"Command organism," Voss said.

Noah continued studying its position as new movement reports appeared around it. The nearby Vraxith attacks were too coordinated to be accidental.

"Designation?" Noah asked.

"Overmind Node."

"Mark its location."

"Artillery strike?"

"Do it only when you have accurate coordinates."

The organism moved before the first targeting solution could be completed. Noah canceled the strike rather than spend heavy ammunition chasing a target whose exact location was already changing.

The pressure continued through the afternoon and forced another central strongpoint to request withdrawal. Siege Crawler fire had damaged the road behind it twice while Breakers approached along both accessible routes.

Noah approved the request and ordered the neighboring units to cover the movement. The goblins evacuated wounded soldiers before moving their heavy weapons and ammunition toward the next line.

Machine-gun teams remained behind until the final infantry sections had cleared the area. They withdrew only after the Vraxith reached the outer obstacles.

Similar movements appeared elsewhere as the fighting continued. A Green Legion position pulled back after repeated bombardment made its supply route unreliable, while Stone Legion abandoned an exposed slope when Praetorians began approaching from both sides.

The troops removed radios, ammunition, wounded soldiers, and functioning vehicles before leaving. Engineers destroyed stores and damaged equipment that could not be recovered safely.

Halden watched the changes spread across the tactical map. "We’re moving backward in three sectors."

"We’re shortening exposed lines," Noah said.

"That is still retreating."

"Yes."

Noah studied the positions remaining around the refineries, rail junctions, and major roads. "We retreat where we need to. We keep the army intact."

Khelron’s own formations began making similar decisions. A local battalion withdrew from a mining settlement after Breakers destroyed its forward barricades, while another unit moved toward a stronger road junction after Sky Tyrants damaged its anti-aircraft position.

Each movement affected only a small section of the battlefield. Taken together, the withdrawals began changing the overall shape of the defensive front.

Varek contacted Noah again to report that several commanders wanted permission to use newly arrived units for immediate counterattacks. Noah denied the requests because the full scale of the Vraxith escalation remained unclear.

"If we spend fresh troops retaking every abandoned position, they’ll be exhausted before we know what else the Vraxith are sending," Noah said.

"Cover every withdrawal with artillery and coordinate neighboring units before anyone moves."

Varek agreed and passed the instructions through the command network. Units began adjusting their positions according to prepared fallback routes rather than attempting to reclaim every lost trench.

Iron Legion shortened sections of its outer belt while Green Legion abandoned isolated northern positions. Stone Legion drew exposed companies toward stronger junctions, ridges, and artillery zones where neighboring formations could support them.

The Vraxith followed the withdrawals and encountered continued resistance along the way.

Machine guns cut down ordinary warriors that pursued too quickly, while artillery targeted Breakers whenever observers found clear firing solutions.

Anti-aircraft guns continued engaging Sky Tyrants whenever several batteries could concentrate on the same target.

Ground formations moved beneath that covering fire without losing communication with neighboring units.

Noah watched another central marker shift backward, followed several minutes later by a northern outpost. A Stone Legion company withdrew toward a junction farther west while nearby Khelron troops adjusted their own positions to prevent an opening from forming.

Supply trains continued running behind the contracting front. Medical vehicles reached rear stations, artillery batteries remained connected to observers, and command channels stayed active throughout the withdrawals.

No unit had begun fleeing without orders. Officers still knew where their formations were and which positions they were expected to occupy next.

By evening, the cumulative movement had become visible across the entire tactical map.

The outer defensive belt had begun contracting in several regions as the Vraxith higher castes pressed forward behind the ordinary swarm.

Goblin and Khelron troops continued firing as they moved toward stronger prepared positions.

The Vraxith gained ground, yet every advance still required them to fight through artillery, machine-gun fire, mines, and delaying positions.

The higher castes had finally given the Swarm enough strength to force the defenders backward. The retreat remained slow, coordinated, and under command as the front gradually withdrew deeper into Khelron.
