My planet is infested with Goblins
Chapter 165: Lines of Defense
Chapter 165: Lines of Defense
The first group crossed the portal only after Noah signaled that the deployment could begin. Instead of infantry flooding into the staging yard, a compact command staff emerged first, carrying field radios, rolled maps, surveying equipment, and several portable communications sets.
At their center walked a tall goblin wearing the dark uniform of the Eldrath Planetary Defense Command. Two silver bars ran across his collar, while the insignia on his coat identified him as the highest-ranking officer in the expedition.
Grand Marshal Varek Dorn stopped several steps from Noah and lowered his head. He had risen during the years following unification, when the four former imperial militaries were being reorganized into a single defense structure, and his reputation had been built around making units with different doctrines function under one command.
"My Lord."
"Grand Marshal."
"The first four legions are assembled."
Noah looked through the portal toward the waiting formations. "You received the regional maps?"
"Yes. My staff has also received the preliminary transport schedules supplied by Khelron."
Varek turned toward the enormous staging yard and studied its exits. His eyes moved from the railway sidings to the western road, then toward the warehouses and open vehicle grounds that Khelron had cleared earlier.
"We can begin moving units almost immediately."
"Good. Send the legion commanders to me as they arrive."
Varek gave a short nod and moved aside to organize the arrival sequence. His staff spread through the staging area while military police began separating the open ground into temporary movement lanes.
The first banner crossed several minutes later.
The 1st Iron Legion entered Khelron in steady columns, its infantry followed by machine-gun companies, artillery tractors, engineering vehicles, medical wagons, and ammunition trucks. The formation carried heavier defensive equipment than the others waiting on Eldrath.
Its commander left the head of the column and approached Noah.
Noah opened the Central Refinery District on the tactical display supplied by Colonel Voss.
Instead of focusing on the refinery buildings themselves, he enlarged the open approaches surrounding them.
"The central district is yours."
The commander studied the map before asking, "Where do you want the primary line?"
"Here."
Noah traced a broad arc several kilometers outside the industrial complex.
"The first positions go along these roads and elevations. I want the main fighting kept away from the refineries for as long as possible."
The commander looked over the terrain.
"Continuous trenches?"
"Not everywhere. Strongpoints covering the approaches, with prepared routes between them."
Noah marked a second line closer to the industrial district.
"If the enemy breaks the first belt, withdraw in order. Don’t let one failed position trap the rest of the legion."
"And the final line?"
"The power stations, main rail junctions, and refinery approaches."
The commander nodded.
Noah zoomed in farther.
"Keep your heavy artillery outside the refinery perimeter. If enemy counter-battery fire lands among fuel tanks or processing equipment because our guns are sitting beside them, we’ve done their work for them."
"Understood."
"The stockpiles are secondary."
The commander looked toward him.
"We abandon them?"
"If the choice is between warehouses and the refinery system, preserve the refinery system."
The commander saluted and returned to his officers.
The Iron Legion began clearing the portal zone almost immediately. Infantry units moved toward waiting trucks while engineering vehicles were directed onto a separate road so they could begin preparing positions before the bulk of the formation arrived.
The second formation appeared before the last Iron Legion artillery battery had left the yard.
The 2nd Green Legion crossed with a much greater number of trucks, reconnaissance vehicles, motorcycles, and lighter artillery.
Its structure reflected the distances it was expected to cover rather than a need to hold one concentrated defensive belt.
Its commander approached as Noah brought up the Northern Extraction Belt.
"The north."
The commander examined the map and then looked at the distances between the marked mining settlements.
"We can’t hold all of that with one legion."
"You’re not going to."
Noah highlighted the largest processing centers, several fuel depots, and three major railway bridges.
"These are your priorities."
The commander enlarged one of the settlements that Noah had left outside the highlighted network.
"What about the smaller mining towns?"
"Keep reconnaissance around them and evacuate civilians if the enemy approaches."
"You don’t want garrisons?"
"Not strong ones."
Noah pointed toward the northern railway.
"If you scatter your companies through every settlement, the enemy only has to concentrate against them one at a time. Keep enough strength together to move."
The commander considered the order.
"The main route to the central region?"
"Keep it open."
"And if the rail line is cut?"
"Use the western road."
Noah shifted the display.
"If both are threatened, preserve the processing centers and withdraw toward positions you can actually defend. I don’t want your legion be surrounded for being stubborn defending a mine."
Colonel Voss, who had remained nearby, glanced toward Noah.
"Some of those towns won’t accept evacuation easily."
"They don’t need to agree with the military situation."
Voss folded his arms.
"You may find Khelron officials less obedient than your own people."
Noah looked toward him. "Then they can argue after they’re alive."
The Green Legion commander hid whatever reaction he had and saluted before returning to his formation.
Its advance units began boarding northbound trains within minutes.
The third major formation arrived behind a line of engineering tractors.
The 3rd Stone Legion brought bridge crews, construction equipment, field workshops, artillery, and a noticeably larger engineering component than either of the previous formations. Heavy vehicles carrying timber, steel sections, prefabricated shelters, and defensive materials followed the infantry.
Noah opened the Eastern Mining Region.
"Your sector is east."
The commander moved closer.
"Primary objective?"
"The rail network."
The commander looked over the dense web of lines connecting smaller mining cities.
"Which junctions?"
"Don’t think in terms of stations."
Noah expanded the terrain surrounding several important railway intersections.
"Think about what controls them."
He marked ridges, bridges, tunnels, narrow valleys, and road crossings.
"If the enemy can put artillery on high ground overlooking a junction, holding the station building means nothing. Your engineers inspect the terrain first and build around the approaches."
The commander nodded.
"Demolition authority?"
"Restricted."
That drew a slight pause.
"If a bridge is about to fall, we may not have time to ask."
"Then destroy it."
Noah shifted to another section.
"But don’t blow a railway because withdrawal becomes inconvenient. We are defending infrastructure, not preparing the world for someone else to rebuild."
"Understood."
"Prepare alternative positions behind every major corridor. If one junction becomes impossible to hold, I want you withdrawing to another defensive line instead of dying around the tracks."
The commander saluted.
Stone Legion engineers were already moving toward the waiting rail platforms before the conversation ended. Several teams departed ahead of their combat units so they could survey the actual ground rather than rely entirely on existing maps.
The fourth formation took longer to cross.
Armored vehicles appeared first behind reconnaissance cars, followed by motorized infantry, mobile artillery batteries, ammunition carriers, repair trucks, and long columns of transport vehicles. The 4th Storm Legion had been built around rapid movement and concentrated firepower.
Its commander approached Noah while the first armored vehicles rolled away from the portal.
"Orders?"
"Remain in the central zone."
The commander gave a single nod.
No question followed.
Colonel Voss waited until the goblin officer had moved away before stepping closer.
"You’re not assigning them a sector?"
"No."
"The south still has gaps."
"I know."
Voss looked toward the Storm Legion’s vehicles.
"Then why keep your most mobile formation here?"
"Because it’s my most mobile formation."
Noah reopened the full regional map.
The other three legions were already beginning to spread outward. Their assignments formed fixed defensive responsibilities across Khelron.
The Storm Legion did not.
Noah marked the two rail routes and three major roads leaving the central region.
"It can reach the north, east, or south from here."
Voss pointed toward the southern approaches.
"It could reach the south sooner if you moved it there now."
"And then it would take longer to reach the north."
"The southern defenses are weaker."
"The enemy hasn’t attacked them yet."
Voss frowned.
"You are waiting for them to choose their target."
"I’m waiting for them to slip up."
Noah looked at the four legion markers.
"If every major force is committed before the first enemy formation arrives, then every response after that requires pulling someone out of an existing position. I want one force that begins uncommitted."
"What if they attack two places?"
"Then the reserve goes to the more crucial position."
Voss studied him.
"And the other place?"
"We hold with what is already there."
The answer clearly did not satisfy him.
Noah had not expected it to.
Voss looked back toward the Storm Legion.
"How many soldiers are in that formation?"
"Enough."
"That’s not particularly useful."
"It’s not supposed to be."
For the first time, Voss gave him an irritated look that was almost open.
Noah turned his attention toward the staging yard before the argument continued.
The portal area had changed dramatically in less than an hour.
The space directly in front of the gateway remained clear while military police directed each arriving group toward separate assembly zones. Artillery moved one way, infantry another, and supply vehicles were sent toward warehouses without stopping the units behind them.
Varek Dorn approached with a field report in hand.
"The Iron Legion’s advance engineers are already moving toward the central line. Green Legion has secured enough trains to begin moving its first infantry regiments north."
"The east?"
"Stone Legion survey teams have departed."
Varek glanced toward the Storm Legion.
"They’re asking whether they should establish a temporary camp."
"Yes, but keep most vehicles loaded."
"Ready to move?"
"Exactly."
Varek nodded.
"The legion commanders also want authority to coordinate directly with local units once they reach their sectors."
"They can coordinate movement and immediate defense."
Noah paused.
"Major changes involving Khelron formations still go through their command."
Varek looked toward Voss.
"Until we have something better."
Voss heard the remark.
"The governor will want that ’something better’ discussed immediately."
Noah turned toward him.
"He wants a meeting?"
"He’s already requested one."
Voss checked a message on his radio.
"Actually, requested is generous. He expects you at the planetary command center now."
Noah looked toward the portal.
More Eldrathi formations continued entering Khelron, but the deployment no longer depended on Noah standing in the middle of the yard and directing every movement.
Varek had control of the arrival process.
"Keep the portal zone clear."
The grand marshal nodded.
"Do you want me at the governor’s meeting?"
"Not yet."
Varek raised an eyebrow but said nothing.
"I need to know what Khelron’s government thinks it controls before we put both militaries in the same room."
That earned a brief grin from the grand marshal.
"I’ll have a staff officer ready if you need me."
Noah walked with Voss toward the waiting vehicle.
Behind them, the staging area continued emptying almost as quickly as troops arrived.
The Iron Legion was already disappearing toward the central approaches.
Green Legion vehicles lined the northern rail platforms.
Stone Legion engineers were leaving ahead of their infantry.
Only the Storm Legion remained concentrated around the central transport network, its vehicles parked in long organized rows with crews still close enough to move on short notice.
Noah looked at the map once more before entering the vehicle.
The four legions no longer existed as symbols waiting for instructions.
The next problem was no longer where Eldrath would fight.
It was whether the government of Khelron would accept the defense Noah had planned.
