The fourth morning in the hidden basalt valley dawned under the sign of a rapid thaw. The freezing, dry frost that had bound the banks of the mountain stream in a thin shell just last night began to slowly give way beneath the pressure of the first predatory rays of the sun. The glass shell of ice cracked with a loud, clean snap, floating down with the foaming current, while the moisture settled on the black, polished stone plate began to evaporate rapidly. Wisps of white, warm steam rose slowly over the stone arena, lending the entire valley a misty, rugged, and almost surreal atmosphere.

I stood barefoot in the very center of the black plate, wearing only short training trousers. My skin and muscles, though hardened by three days of ruthless katorga on the slippery stone in the stream's current, still throbbed with a sharp, clean pain from yesterday's collisions with the old man's hard fists. The energy conduits in my chest were silent. For seventy-two hours, my core had been severed from my physical Vessel, leaving me in a state of absolute, Spartan discipline where my only weapons were raw skeletal mechanics, sharpened Yomi, and gravity.

From behind my back came the slow, scuffing step of bare feet on rough basalt, accompanied by the distinct, acrid smell of burning tobacco from an old clay pipe. I didn't turn my head. My accelerated metabolism and heightened senses flawlessly registered the old man's presence beside me.

Sensei stopped a step behind my back. He released a thick, grey cloud of smoke that slowly mingled with the steam rising above the rock. For a long moment, an absolute, deafening silence hung over the gorge, broken only by the steady, deep roar of the river.

"Three days," the old man finally spoke, his raspy, concise voice cutting through the humid air like a sharp razor. "Three days you ran in the mud, drowned in the water, and took beatings on the hard stone. Your body has finally stopped fighting gravity. You've stopped tensing up like a dead log at the sight of an incoming strike. You've learned that zero resistance is the only way to avoid being broken on hard ground. Time to see if you can transfer that lesson inside."

I raised my chin slightly, wasting no energy on unnecessary words.

The old man slowly raised his right hand. He didn't tense his muscles, didn't generate any perceptible aura, nor did he chant poetic spells. He folded two fingers in a simple, dismissive gesture—exactly as he had four days ago when he shut down my conduits with a single precise strike. Without a word of warning, Sensei delivered one short, sharp flick directly into the same cervical vertebra on the back of my neck.

CLICK!

In a fraction of a second, as if a giant dam had been opened on a dammed river, the sapphire reactor in my chest exploded with life. The previously severed mana rushed into my body like liquid, white-hot silver. A pure, inhuman tonnage of energy flooded my dry energetic pathways under immense pressure.

Instinctively, I attempted to form sapphire plasma around my hands to vent this sudden surge of voltage.

That was a mistake.

BOOM!

In a fraction of a millisecond, wild blue lightning bolts erupted from my hands, shoulders, and chest. Energy tore in every direction without rhyme or reason, searing my own skin and striking the basalt plate beneath my feet with a loud, cracking boom. The air around me instantly saturated with the sharp, biting smell of ozone. This wasn't controlled force—it was a chaotic, turbulent explosion. The mana inside my conduits surged, collided against the walls of the Vessels, and formed violent eddies. Every blockage generated colossal friction that tore my tissues from within, triggering a burning agony and wasting over ninety percent of my real power.

My blood Vessels strained to their absolute limits, and dark blood dripped from my lips.

To control this, I had to immediately apply the lesson from the roaring stream. I had to abandon resistance entirely.

"Stop fighting the current. Become transparent to it."

I took a deep, slow breath, even though my chest was burning. Intentionally and with iron discipline of will, I began to decelerate the rushing core. Instead of forcing the mana outward, I let it slow down. I began arranging the chaotic waves of energy into perfectly smooth, parallel streams. I broke down the energetic eddies inside my conduits, forcing every particle of mana to move in the same direction at the same stable, frictionless speed.

I was transitioning to laminar flow.

It was pure, surgical engineering inside my own body. In a fraction of a second, as soon as the turbulent blockages vanished, the friction inside the conduits dropped to zero. The tearing pain in my Vessels instantly subsided, replaced by a cool, crystalline, and impossibly dense sapphire dominance.

The wild, chaotic lightning bolts shooting from my skin vanished without a trace. In their place, a remarkably thin, quiet, and silent aura of sapphire plasma ignited around my bare, bruise-covered silhouette. The energy no longer tore outward; it adhered closely to my skin, moving in a perfect, stable rhythm that resembled a smooth sheet of flowing glass.

"You learn quickly, boy," the old man muttered, taking the pipe from his mouth and tucking it behind his leather belt. "Your energy has finally stopped fighting your body. Let's see how this new fluidity of yours withstands my hard fist."

And without another word, Sensei launched into an attack.

The old man's movement was far faster now than yesterday on the black basalt. He was no longer restricted by my lack of magic—he knew I had my arsenal back, so he raised the bar to a level that would be an immediate death sentence for an ordinary mortal. His hard, calloused fist shot straight toward my chin at a speed that tore through the steaming mist.

My Yomi caught the rotation of the old man's hips a fraction of a second before the strike. I made a fluid, slipping movement with my neck and hips, letting his fist pass right by.

But this time, I did something more.

At the moment of rotation, through my perfectly calibrated, laminar conduits, I released a micro-flash of sapphire plasma, discharging it directly into the air through my left shoulder.

HISS!

It wasn't an attack. It was a micro-thruster.

The sapphire plasma released under pressure acted as a frictionless momentum booster. The small, condensed impulse of energy pushed my shoulder away from the old man's incoming fist, completely neutralizing the inertia of my body. I moved with unnatural, biologically impossible speed, evading the lethal blow by the width of a single hair.

SWISH!

Sensei's fist cut through the empty mist, and the momentum of the strike merely brushed single strands of my dark blond hair.

The old man didn't pause for a millisecond. Utilizing the momentum, he instantly delivered a left hook to my torso, aiming straight for my sore, cracked ribs from yesterday. The strike was lethal, designed to end the fight in a single blow.

I didn't attempt to retreat backward. I remembered that moving backward on hard ground meant a loss of balance and certain death.

Instead, I executed a fluid, pendulum movement with my hips into the depth of the old man's range. At the same moment, I released another micro-flash of sapphire energy through my bare right foot directly into the black basalt.

CRACK!

A blue spark struck the black rock, and the reaction force instantly shoved my hips to the side, evading the Master's destructive fist by millimeters. On the black, polished basalt beneath my foot remained a perfect, sapphire-charred mark from which a delicate wisp of smoke rose.

The dance of shadows on the basalt transformed into a complete, sapphire spectacle.

Sensei delivered dozens of strikes at a deadly, inhuman pace. His fists wove a dense net of lethal trajectories around me. Yet I moved with my eyes closed, barefoot and in my shorts, resembling a fluid, blue pendulum. Every one of my evasions was minimal, effortless, and perfectly synchronized with the opponent's movement. With every step, with every tilt of my neck or hips, tiny, precise sparks of sapphire plasma erupted from my skin, neutralizing my body's inertia with a loud crack and burning further scorched marks into the black rock.

At one point, Sensei executed a powerful, double-handed strike aimed directly at my solar plexus. It was a blow meant to shatter my balance and end the training.

I felt a sudden thickening of the air in front of my chest. Without a second's hesitation, I sent a massive laminar impulse of mana backward through both shoulders, creating a temporary, blue energy sail out of sapphire plasma.

BSHHH!

The recoil force instantly shifted my torso back by a mere three centimeters, perfectly arching my back.

The Master's lethal fists passed exactly one millimeter above my bare chest, slicing through the mist hanging over the plate. I stood motionless, my arms hanging loosely along my torso, as blue wisps of smoke slowly rose from my bare back.

Silence fell over the black basalt plate. Only the roar of the river and the quiet crackling of the cooling sapphire fire on the rock broke the stillness.

Slowly, I opened my sapphire eye.

Sensei stood right in front of me, his hands lowered by his sides. The old man slowly pulled his pipe from his belt, placed it in his mouth, and lit it with a small, natural flame from his finger. He released a thick cloud of smoke, staring at my feet surrounded by scorched marks and the smoking rock around us.

In his tiger's-eye eyes burned a deep, unclouded respect.

"You did it, boy," the old man rasped. "You've stopped treating mana as an external weapon you throw at enemies. You've understood that energy is merely an extension of your own biomechanics. Your conduits are clean now, and laminar flow eliminates the friction that restricted you until now. This is the true foundation of the Sapphire Flow Style."

I smiled quietly, and on my blood-stained, soot-smeared face appeared that same insolent, predatory expression.

"This is only the beginning, Sensei," I muttered, wiping the blood under my nose with the back of my hand.

"Yes, this is only the beginning," the old man agreed, turning with a slow step toward the hut. "You've mastered defense and movement. But the style I am teaching you is not meant merely for dodging blows. True Sapphire Flow lies in absorbing the force you frictionlessly pass by, accumulating it inside your laminar conduits, and returning it to the enemy with destructive, multiplied power. Tomorrow, you will learn how to strike. Go to sleep, kid. Because tomorrow, this black basalt will begin to crack under your feet."

My analytical mind was already racing into the future, designing further lethal combat schematics. I had mastered frictionless movement. I had understood the laminar engineering of conduits. When I combine this with the destructive force of sapphire plasma in attack that the old man mentioned, I will become a monster that no one in this cursed city will be able to stop. Not the elite guild retinues, nor the ancient beasts from the deepest levels of the dungeons.

Dave Reinhart was slowly returning to his path. And it was a path written in sapphire fire.
