My Overpowered Bunny Girls
Chapter 199: Shepherd’s Emissary
The shadows didn’t just crawl, they exploded out of the stone walls with a sharp, hissing snap!.
Nathan’s eyes flared as he triggered [Hunter’s Insight], and the chaotic gloom instantly snapped into sharp, clean focus. These weren’t standard monsters warped by the Cleansing. They were something far older, far more unnatural. They moved like thick black smoke, their bodies stretching, melting, and reforming with every beat of his heart. They had no faces, no eyes, just terrifyingly long, thin arms ending in jagged claws of pure, suffocating darkness.
"Line up!" Nathan shouted over the rising wind. "Defensive formation!"
The party moved as one fluid machine. Mirko slammed into her human form, Dragon’s Fang bursting into a brilliant wall of purified wyrm-fire. Her [Impenetrable Fortress] flared to life, a solid dome of jade light that instantly shoved the nearest wave of shadows back.
Above them, Shiro’s [Dragon King’s Ascension] rocketed her toward the vaulted ceiling, leaving a trail of golden fire that chased away the dark.
Garrett and Red planted their boots in the center of the hall, ready to intercept anything that broke the lines. Dillon and Cloudy sparked with fierce blue lightning, while Elise summoned her Frost Golem, its crystalline body shining like a cold beacon in the gloom.
Kuro didn’t shout or flash into view. She simply stepped backward and vanished into the darkness, blending seamlessly with the enemy’s own elements.
The central figure, the Emissary, watched them with its empty, dark eye sockets. It didn’t rush forward or bare its teeth. It just stood calmly in front of the broken Throne, tilting its featureless head as if it were observing a strange new bug under a microscope.
"That’s the Shepherd’s Emissary," Smithy muttered, his voice tight and breathless. "They aren’t like the Court’s foot soldiers. They aren’t even human. They are direct pieces of the Shepherd’s own mind."
"Then we smash it," Nathan said.
He pulled back Moonlight’s string and loosed [Starfall Barrage]. A single silver arrow shot high into the ruined ceiling, instantly splitting into dozens of glowing projectiles that rained down in a deadly storm.
Before a single arrow could land, the shadows whipped upward, swallowing every last one in a thick black cloud. The Emissary didn’t even blink.
"Your arrows are just toys, little King," it spoke. Its voice was unsettlingly wrong, too smooth. "I am not bound by the pathetic rules of this World. I am the Shepherd’s living hand."
"Then we’ll chop the hand off!" Mirko roared.
She charged forward like a freight train. Dragon’s Fang tore through the air, the roaring flames scattering the smoke-monsters like morning mist. Mirko closed the distance to the Emissary in a heartbeat and brought her heavy blade down in a brutal, sweeping arc.
Her sword sliced straight through empty air.
The Emissary wasn’t there anymore. It had melted away and reformed three feet to her left, utterly untouched. "Too slow, little Knight."
It casually flicked a wrist. A heavy wave of compressed shadow slammed into Mirko’s side. Her jade shield held, but the sheer kinetic force blasted her backward, her boots scraping deep grooves into the broken stone floor.
From above, Shiro descended like a falling star. [Tyrant Dragon Fist] detonated with a deafening KRAK-BOOM, sending a shockwave of golden fire rolling across the floor.
The Emissary simply dissolved again, slipping through the blast like vapor, before materializing on the other side of the hall. It raised both hands, and the shadows shot out like living ropes, wrapping tightly around Shiro’s arms and legs.
With a fierce cry, Shiro triggered [Dragonification]. Brilliant gold scales rapidly spread across her skin, and a pair of massive, glowing wings burst from her back. The sudden burst of dragon fire burned the shadow-ropes away to nothing. She broke free and landed lightly beside Nathan.
"It isn’t solid," Shiro warned, her golden eyes locked on the shifting target. "It keeps changing its state. We can’t land a clean hit while it’s like this."
"Then we force it to stay put," Nathan said.
He locked his gaze onto the creature and fired [Death’s Homing Compass]. A bright, silver sigil instantly burned itself right into the center of the Emissary’s chest. Even as the creature’s body flickered and shifted like smoke, the silver mark stayed locked in place.
Nathan drew his string again and loosed. The arrow curved sharply mid-air, chasing the Emissary as it tried to slide away. THWACK. It struck dead center.
The Emissary stumbled. Its shifting form violently locked up, turning solid for a single, painful second before it could disperse again. "Fascinating," it hissed, sounding genuinely surprised. "The Shepherd’s own mark... used against me."
"Everyone, hit that mark!" Nathan ordered, nocking another arrow. "Focus everything on the sigil!"
The team didn’t hesitate.
Mirko launched herself forward again, unleashing a violent [Aegis Strike] that cracked the stone. Shiro followed up with another heavy [Tyrant Dragon Fist], the golden explosion catching the Emissary right as it solidified.
Garrett swung Volcan, sending a wave of burning heat across the room. Dillon jumped into the mix, his [Thunder Edge] sending jagged bolts of electricity dancing through the floor. Elise cast a heavy [Glacial Lance] that punched straight through the creature’s shoulder, while the Frost Golem slammed its heavy ice fists into the ground, freezing the shadows in place.
And out of nowhere, Kuro materialized directly behind the Emissary. Her daggers flashed twice in the dim light. SHINK-SHINK. She drove both blades deep into its spine.
The Emissary let out a sound that made everyone’s blood run cold.
It wasn’t a human scream. It was a violent, tearing noise, like the fabric of reality itself ripping in half. The black smoke violently collapsed inward, and the Emissary’s shape began to break apart, flickering wildly.
It turned its dark, empty sockets toward Nathan.
"The Shepherd will never forget this," it whispered, its voice cracking and breaking. "You will never take the Throne. This World belongs to death. And you, little King... you will watch everything you love burn down to the dirt eventually."
Nathan pulled Moonlight back to his cheek. "We’ll see about that."
He let the arrow fly. It struck the glowing sigil on the Emissary’s chest with a sharp PING.
The sigil flared blindingly bright. Then, like a cheap mirror dropping onto a stone floor, the Emissary shattered into a million tiny pieces of pale, glowing light that faded into nothingness.
The hall went dead quiet, save for the heavy breathing of the party.
For a long moment, nobody moved.
The shadows were completely gone. The strange emissary was destroyed. But at the far end of the vast, ruined hall, the broken Throne still sat silently on its black stone block, radiating an ancient, freezing weight.
A soft sound broke the quiet. The hooded man—their Crownless guide—stepped out from behind a collapsed marble pillar. His eyes were wide, and his jaw was hanging open. "You killed it. By the old gods... you actually killed the Shepherd’s Emissary."
"Well, it wasn’t the Shepherd," Nathan said, lowering his bow and letting out a long, slow breath. "Just a piece of him."
"A piece that has butchered every single person who ever stood against it," the man whispered, shaking his head slowly. "You’re different, outsider. I don’t know what you are, but you’re different."
Nathan walked past him, stepping up the stone steps until he stood right in front of the broken Throne. Up close, the stone was freezing cold to the touch, and the jagged crack running down its middle pulsed with a faint, sickly grey light. The Shepherd’s dark magic was trapped deep inside the material, like a disease in bone.
"This Throne," Nathan said, his hand resting on the cracked stone. "The Crownless think it’s cursed. They think anyone who sits on it catches the Shepherd’s madness."
"We didn’t just think it, we watched it happen," the man replied firmly. "Three different lords tried to claim it over the last hundred years. All three lost their minds. All three died screaming in this exact room."
Nathan looked down at the broken seat, then back at his tired, battered team, and finally over at the hooded man. "What if the curse isn’t permanent? What if the Throne can actually be cleaned?"
The man stared at him like he had grown a second head. "You’re out of your mind."
"Maybe. But if we don’t try to fix it, this entire World is just going to rot away." Nathan turned to face him fully. "The Crownless have guarded this wreck for generations. You know every secret buried in these stones. Help us. Tell us how to break the curse."
The man stood in silence for a long, heavy minute. Then, with slow, deliberate movements, he reached up and pulled back his torn hood.
His face was covered in old, jagged scars and the deep, heavy lines of a lifetime of grief. "My name is Corvus," he said quietly. "I am the last bloodline of the old imperial family. This was my father’s seat. And if you are crazy enough to try and break the curse... I’ll help you do it."
Nathan reached out, offering a firm hand. "Then let’s get to work."
