Chapter 191: The Shattered Throne Awaits

Nathan stood at the head of the table of the briefing room, his party gathered around him. Valerie sat near the back, her expression unreadable. Helena stood by a large map of the known Tower Worlds, her Thunderbird crackling faintly on her shoulder. Smithy was there too, his Void Eel coiled at his feet. And the three summons—Mirko, Kuro, and Shiro—were in their small forms, perched on the table and watching everything.

"The Shattered Throne," Helena began, activating a holographic display. The image of a broken world appeared—floating islands connected by crumbling bridges, ancient castles built on fragments of a shattered empire. "A Master Class Tower World. It was once a single, unified realm, ruled by a line of kings. But the Shepherd broke it. Shattered the world into fragments. Now it’s a warzone."

Nathan studied the image. The floating islands were scattered across a pale void, each one crowned with castles and fortresses. Banners of a dozen different colors flew over the ruins. "Warlords," he said. "Valerie mentioned them."

"Twelve major factions," Helena confirmed. "Each one claiming the right to rule the broken empire. They’ve been fighting for centuries. The Clear Condition is to unite them—to place a single ruler on the throne. The World won’t be cleared until that happens."

Dillon leaned back. "So we’re not just climbing. We’re playing kingmaker."

"More or less." Helena advanced the display. "The TCA has been in contact with one of the factions—the Legion of the Shattered Crown. They’re the remnants of the old imperial army. They’re loyal to the memory of the old kings, and they’re open to outside help. If we can support them, help them unite the other factions, the TCA believes the World will recognize the restored crown as the legitimate ruler."

"And if the other factions don’t agree?" Garrett asked.

"Then we’ll have to convince them. Through diplomacy. Or force." Helena’s expression was serious. "This World isn’t like the Ashen Expanse or the Verdant Depths. The enemies aren’t mindless monsters. They’re people. Civilizations. Some of them will be reasonable. Some will be fanatics. Some will try to kill you the moment you arrive."

Nathan looked at his party. They were all watching him, waiting for his decision. "We need more information. What do we know about the factions? Their leaders? Their strengths and weaknesses?"

Helena brought up a new display—a list of names and symbols. "We know enough to get started. The Legion of the Shattered Crown is the most stable faction. Their leader is a woman named Lady Seraphine—a former imperial general who’s been holding the line for decades. She’s pragmatic, honorable, and tired of the endless war. She wants peace. That’s why she’s willing to work with outsiders."

"Seraphine," Mirko repeated. "Like the Silver Drake captain?"

"Different person. Just a coincidence." Helena smiled briefly. "The other factions are more problematic. The Iron Court is a military dictatorship—strong, disciplined, and hostile to outsiders. The Vine Council is a group of druidic separatists who want to sever the World from the Shepherd’s influence entirely. The Deep Fleet is a naval faction that controls the floating seas. And the Crownless are nihilists—they believe the old empire should never be restored and fight to keep the World broken."

Nathan absorbed the information. Each faction was a potential ally or enemy. The Clear Condition wasn’t a simple fight. It was a political puzzle.

"We’ll need to meet with Lady Seraphine first," Nathan said. "Hear her story. Understand the World’s history. Then we can decide our approach."

Valerie spoke from the back of the room. "The Shattered Throne is a long climb. It’s not like the other Worlds. You won’t be in and out in a few weeks. This could take months. The TCA will support you, but you’ll be on your own inside the World. No reinforcements. No outside contact. Just your party and your wits."

Nathan looked at his summons. Mirko’s pink eyes were bright with determination. Kuro’s dark gaze was steady. Shiro’s golden eyes burned with quiet fire. They were ready.

He looked at his party. Garrett, Dillon, Elise, Smithy. They were battered, tired, but still standing. Still fighting.

"Then we prepare," Nathan said. "We rest. We resupply. We learn everything we can about the Shattered Throne. And then we go in."

He turned to face the map of the Shattered Throne. The floating islands seemed to pulse with a life of their own, as if the World was waiting for them.

"The Shattered Throne awaits," Nathan said quietly. "And we’re going to put it back together."

---

That night, Nathan found Elise on the balcony of the guild hall.

The city stretched below, its lights glittering in the darkness. The stars above were bright, unpolluted by the red glow of the Cleansing. The world was healing. The outer regions were rebuilding. And Nathan’s party was preparing for their next journey.

Elise didn’t turn when he approached. She simply stood at the railing, her silver hair catching the starlight. "You’re thinking about the Shattered Throne."

"Among other things." Nathan joined her at the railing. "This one’s different. The other Worlds were about healing or mercy. This one’s about politics. About power. About choosing the right ruler."

"It’s the logical next step." Elise’s voice was quiet. "The Shepherd destroys. But we... we rebuild. Not just worlds, maybe civilizations too"

"Can we really do that? Install a ruler? Make a difference in a World that’s been fighting for centuries?"

Elise turned to face him. Her icy blue eyes were soft, warmer than they’d been when they first met. "We’ve already made a difference. We ended the Cleansing. We freed the Leviathan. We gave the Ashen Expanse peace. If the Shattered Throne needs a ruler, we’ll find one. Someone worthy."

Nathan looked at her for a long moment. The stars reflected in her eyes. "You’ve changed."

"So have you." A faint smile touched her lips. "We’ve both changed."

Nathan reached out and took her hand. She didn’t pull away. They stood together on the balcony, the city humming below, the stars watching above, and Nathan felt something warm settle in his chest.

Whatever the Shattered Throne held, they’d face it together.
