My Most Beautiful Fiancée

Chapter 130: A Blank Check

  • Next Chapter

Zhao Ling'Er turned to look at the hospital bed and saw that Liu Yifang had opened her eyes.

Zhao Ling'Er immediately grabbed Mu Lin. "Miss Liu is awake!"

Mu Lin had noticed as well.

Liu Yifang pulled back her hand. Seeing the wound in her palm, she stared blankly for a moment. "This is..."

Zhao Ling'Er hurried over and offered a small smile. "To drain the poisoned blood, we had to make a small cut in your palm. Please don't worry; it was disinfected, so you'll be fine."

Liu Yifang was also excited to see Zhao Ling'Er. "Miss Zhao, we just met the day before yesterday!"

Zhao Ling'Er smiled as well. "That's right. If certain people hadn't been making trouble, we probably would've have you cured long ago."

Mu Lin pouted. "Hey, don't drag me into this. It's exhausting!"

Although Liu Yifang was awake, she still required a great deal of care.

It wouldn't be easy.

Zhao Ling'Er stuck out her tongue playfully.

Outside the operating room, Mu Lin and Divine Doctor Zhao pushed open the doors and stepped out.

Liu Yiming walked up to Mu Lin, his lips merely twitching, not daring to utter a sound.

"Mr. Mu, how is her condition?"

"She's out of danger. Now it's all about recuperation. Elder Liao should be an expert in this area, so you might as well let him handle it."

Doctor Liao thought, 'Is my only value to prescribe a diet for the patient after surgery?'

She's fine! In Liu Yiming's mind, those two words sounded like a firecracker going off.

Liu Yiming kicked Liu Qizhou, who hurried over and placed a check in front of Mu Lin.

"This is a blank check. Fill in any amount you wish. The Liu Family won't bat an eye."

Mu Lin was left speechless. 'Isn't this the kind of thing you only see in movies?'

'But the situations where they appear usually don't end well.'

'The person who fills out the check either dies a violent death or is forced to flee to the ends of the earth.'

Mu Lin felt his life was perfectly fine as it was; there was no need to do something so reckless.

"No rush. I'll just hold onto this for now," Mu Lin said. "I don't know how much I want yet."

"How much did you guys give Doctor Liao?" Zhao Ling'Er asked curiously.

Doctor Liao, standing to the side, felt his face twitch. 'I was trying so hard to be low-key, and they still dragged me into it.'

Doctor Liao took a deep breath and answered himself. "Three hundred million..."

Mu Lin tsked. "I don't think you should be a doctor. Wouldn't robbing a bank be better? For three hundred million, why not just go rob one?"

Doctor Liao said with a gloomy expression, "The problem is, I didn't actually help with anything, so that offer is void... I'm just thanking my lucky stars the Liu Family isn't holding me accountable."

'Heh, so that's how it is.'

Mu Lin unfolded the check and wrote down a string of numbers. "This'll do!"

Then he folded it over and over and tucked it into an inside pocket.

None of the people present could see clearly what Mu Lin had written.

Mu Lin had written one billion. He planned to handle it as he always did: give it to Zhou Qianfan and have him arrange for it to be donated to impoverished areas.

The Zhou Family was reliable.

"Elder Zhao, I have to get back to the hospital, so if you'll excuse me."

Divine Doctor Zhao didn't understand at first. "What are you going to the hospital for?"

Mu Lin simply said that Elder Li wasn't well and was staying in the hospital.

He didn't want the news of the attack to spread any further.

Divine Doctor Zhao figured that Elder Li was getting old and his health was gradually declining, so it was normal for such problems to arise.

"Then I'll have..."

But Liu Yiming kicked Liu Qizhou. "You take him. And on the way, think long and hard about how to apologize properly!"

Liu Qizhou rubbed his forehead, where the swelling had long since subsided. His earlier bravado was gone, and he followed Mu Lin out with a subservient stoop.

Meanwhile, Liu Yiming, led by Divine Doctor Zhao, walked into the operating room.

Liu Yifang was asleep on the operating table, her slumber unexpectedly peaceful.

She had been tormented for so long. Now that she could finally get a good night's sleep, her stress naturally eased considerably.

"My poor granddaughter..." Liu Yiming walked over to the basin of black blood on the floor.

"Is this the Cold Poison that tormented Fangfang for nearly two years?"

Divine Doctor Zhao said, "Yes. It started as a tiny amount of Cold Poison, but when left unchecked, it multiplied rapidly and became extremely rampant."

"Later, I'll mix this with quicklime and bury it deep underground so it can never harm anyone again."

Hearing Divine Doctor Zhao speak of it in such an arcane manner, Liu Yiming thought, 'This is clearly not a field I should meddle in,' and wisely kept silent.

Divine Doctor Zhao turned and exited, giving the Liu grandfather and granddaughter some space.

He came face to face with Doctor Liao, who stood with his hands clasped before him, looking exceptionally constrained.

"Divine Doctor Zhao!"

Divine Doctor Zhao jumped as if he'd been struck by lightning. "Don't start with that! We're both just doctors who run clinics and treat patients. No need for all this formality!"

But Doctor Liao said, "You have an expert like Divine Doctor Mu by your side. Before long, the medical world of Anhua will be yours for the taking."

"Don't get ahead of yourself and make decisions for me. I have no interest in any of that. Managing my current clinic is already my limit. Or are you trying to ruin me with excessive praise?"

"No, you're overthinking things," Doctor Liao said. "I just want to consult Divine Doctor Mu about a few things. Could you perhaps... pave the way for me?"

"I can put in a good word for you, then you can go find him. But don't call him 'Divine Doctor' to his face, or he'll probably punch you."

Doctor Liao looked thoughtful. "I understand. I'll be sure to do that!"

He was just too curious. Why had his own treatment methods been useless?

He was from Beijing, after all, and had his pride. He could never accept such an inexplicable defeat.

Liu Qizhou drove Mu Lin toward the City Hospital.

"Mr. Mu, is Elder Li doing okay? Should I maybe stop by a supermarket and buy a gift to pay our respects?"

Mu Lin sighed. "That won't be necessary. But I might as well tell you the truth. He was attacked yesterday. Although he was lucky to escape with his life, he's in a coma. We don't know when he'll recover."

Liu Qizhou's eyes narrowed. In his view, the Li Family was nothing special, but they weren't a small operation either. How could something like an attack happen to them?

"Should I arrange a better room for him, then? A lot of people at the City Hospital are connected to the Liu Family one way or another. My word carries some weight there."

Mu Lin waved his hand. "Elder Zhang is already handling things. He's in the best room they have. We can't ask for more."

"Elder Zhang? You mean Zhang Chunlei?" Liu Qizhou asked tentatively.

Mu Lin nodded. "That's him. If he hadn't fought with all his might to keep him alive yesterday, even my skills, god-like as they may be, wouldn't have been enough to save him."

An idea sparked in Liu Qizhou's mind. Since Mu Lin thought highly of Zhang Chunlei, then by looking out for Zhang Chunlei, he could improve the relationship between Mu Lin and the Liu Family.

Mu Lin got out of the car, thanked Liu Qizhou, and then walked briskly into the hospital.

When Mu Lin returned to the hospital room, Li Xue, seeing how long he'd been gone, asked, "Where did you go?"

"To make some money. Six hundred million, to be exact!"

"Yeah, right! You think you can earn more than the entire South City Plot 6 project in such a short amount of time?"

To be honest, the profit the Li Group stood to make from the South City Plot 6 project was, at most, that very amount.

The reason they were so invested in the project was because of the influence it would bring.

The result of Li Xue being so invested in it was that she now liked to use Plot 6 as a benchmark for everything.

"Believe it or not! How's Mom?"

Li Xue said, "Mom's awake. She's been moved to a regular ward."

"A regular deluxe room, that is."

She added, "Elder Zhang has really been looking out for our family."

Mu Lin nodded, secretly making a mental note of this debt of gratitude.

"But Grandpa still isn't responding. Elder Zhang said that if this continues, he might... end up in a vegetative state..."

Mu Lin couldn't help but feel a little resentful toward Zhang Chunlei. 'Why would he say something like that to her?'

'Li Xue isn't the one who can make the final call on these things. Couldn't he have just said something reassuring?'

"It's not that dramatic. As long as I can find the right medicinal herbs, I can wake him up."

Normally, Li Xue would have scolded Mu Lin for talking nonsense, but after witnessing his abilities yesterday, she held her tongue.

"So, where can we buy them? Should I try to find a way?"

Mu Lin gave a dry laugh. 'Honestly, these herbs are so rare they're barely even a footnote in the pharmacopoeia. I doubt there are many pharmacies in the world that would have them in stock.'

'It's going to be very difficult to acquire them.'

"I'll think of something."

"Besides, our family can't just keep relying on Divine Doctor Zhao, can we? We're already too deep in his debt!"

Mu Lin figured Li Xue had another, smaller motive—like not wanting him to get too close to Zhao Ling'Er.

He didn't say it out loud, though. After all, if he were to point it out, she would only deny it.

Besides, even with Divine Doctor Zhao's influence, finding such rare herbs would still be difficult. He would need to leverage some more powerful connections.

For example, the three great families. Setting aside the Yang Family, which was a lost cause, there were still the Zhou and Liu families he could ask.
