The Rose Foundation annex café was all light wood and quiet money. Logan sat where he could see both doors. He did not order anything he would have to leave behind.

Evelyn came in wearing sunglasses she did not need indoors. A man in a gray suit came with her. Not Paul’s gray. Foundation gray. A lawyer with clean shoes and a mouth that had learned to stay shut until it got paid.

She sat. The lawyer sat half a pace back.

"You look different," Evelyn said.

"You look like a woman who grabbed the wrong wrist last week and is trying to live."

The lawyer cleared his throat.

"We are here for the library file. Chain of custody. No social copies."

Logan put a sealed drive on the table. Not his only copy. He was not newly born.

"Andrew’s hand. Andrew’s voice note is not on this drive. That one stays with Hydra counsel. You get the wrist because it is her skin."

Evelyn’s jaw flexed.

"You always needed to feel moral when you were cruel."

"You sent me a video of you riding my best friend and called it honesty. Do not lecture me on moral."

The lawyer took the drive like it might bite. He left them two minutes of air that neither of them deserved.

Evelyn took off the glasses. Her eyes were red in a way makeup had not planned.

"Andrew is going to say you paid me. He is going to say Stephanie paid me. He is going to say the clip is cut."

"Let him say it in a room with a clock and a secretary."

She leaned in.

"Paul asked me if I would testify that you isolated Stephanie. He offered to fix a foundation grant that my uncle has been begging for. I said I would think about it so he would not put men on my street the way he put them on yours."

Logan’s pulse jumped.

"That is the sentence I needed. Say it again to Mara Quinn off record and I will keep your name out of Friday’s moral packet."

Evelyn stared at him for a long time.

"I hated you because you made me look at the version of myself that picks the richer boy. I still hate you. I will still not help Paul put a woman in a wellness van."

It was not love. It was not redemption. It was a hinge.

She stood.

"If you ruin me with the old album I will come back from this and I will use the Rose name properly."

"Stay off the album and I will let you keep the name."

She left first.

The lawyer followed.

Logan paid for water he had not drunk.

Outside the annex, Counterweight warmed as if it could smell a fist before the fist existed.

Andrew was across the street.

No hoodie now. A shirt that tried to look like court. He started walking the moment he saw Logan, fast, diagonal, the kind of line a man draws when he has decided the café is public enough to get away with something.

"You gave her a drive," Andrew said. "You gave my girl a drive."

"She is not your girl. She is a Rose who watched you grab her and then priced her own wrist."

Andrew’s hand came up.

Public street. Open sky. A bus camera. A café window.

Counterweight woke.

Andrew’s palm hit Logan’s face hard enough to turn his head. The sound was clean. People looked. A phone came up. Another.

The system did not block the sting. It copied it.

[Counterweight triggered]

[Public first strike by Andrew Hale]

[Auto-push: Hydra counsel / Mara Quinn / Paper Shield firm / Rose annex lawyer]

[Context packet includes pre-strike audio from host phone]

Andrew stood there breathing like he had won something.

Logan tasted blood and smiled with the side of his mouth that still worked.

"Thank you," he said. "Friday needed a live demonstration."

Andrew’s face changed as the meaning arrived too late.

He looked at the phones. At the street. At the annex window.

He stepped back.

"This is not over."

"It is on file," Logan said. "Over is a luxury you sold when you hit me in daylight."

He walked.

Behind him Andrew started shouting at a stranger to delete a video that had already left the block.

[Mission 2 complete]

[Andrew narrative conversion: 100%]

[City now holds a simple sentence: the son hits, the father threatens, the director speaks]

[Friday board status: host listed as material witness]

[Warning: Paul Hale will not strike in public. Paul Hale will change the board’s math]

Logan touched the heat on his cheek and felt, for the first time since the party, that the beating might have moved in the opposite direction.

Then Stephanie texted.

Charles just flipped. He wants immunity. He has Paul’s original purchase-promise list. 170 names. If it is real, Friday is not a debate. It is a hanging. He will only meet you. Tonight. The old Hydra annex warehouse. Come alone or he burns the list

Charles had been a traitor when it paid. He wanted to be a witness now that it hurt. Logan did not trust the conversion. He trusted the panic.

The old Hydra annex warehouse sat on a service road that city lighting had given up on. Logan did not come alone in the way Charles meant. Night Watch sat two streets off with a live pin and a promise to move if the pin stopped.

Quiet Room went up when Logan stepped inside. Dust. Oil. A table with one lamp.

Charles looked smaller without a boardroom. Sweat had ruined his collar.

"I did not know they would send men to a student’s door," he said.

"You knew they would send a woman off a chair. Start there."

Charles put a folder on the table. Not a drive. Paper. Old instinct.

Logan flipped. Names. Numbers. Promised bonuses. Initials that matched sitting members. A note in Paul’s hand that made the lamp feel hotter..
