Chapter 69: Chapter 70: Li Mo Breaks Through, Fusing Turtle Shell Skill
Have you ever experienced the sensation of walking faster and faster, growing more and more exhilarated with every step?
Su Chen had just experienced exactly that. The simple mode for activating the Wind Chasing Step was simply walking. As he walked, Su Chen felt as though he were about to take flight. His speed abruptly increased, and his footwork became increasingly effortless. It felt as if a ten-kilogram weight had been removed from his legs and replaced with an accelerator.
Not long after, Su Chen returned home. After cultivating while walking, his Wind Chasing Step had now reached the perfection stage. The reason he hadn’t cultivated it to the limit was simply a lack of money. He had acquired a total of eighty-three taels from the Flying Thief. Even adding his meager savings, he only had a little over one hundred taels.
After spending sixteen taels of silver to Krypton Gold the Wind Chasing Step, he didn’t have enough to Krypton Gold any further. Although he couldn’t continue to Krypton Gold, Su Chen was still very satisfied with the speed of the Wind Chasing Step.
He thought, "The Wind Chasing Step excels in speed, while the Thunderbolt Leg excels in kicking attacks. The combination of the two perfectly complements each other!"
Now, Su Chen finally felt that he had grasped the basics of martial arts. With the ability to advance and attack or retreat and escape, he truly possessed the power to protect himself within White Stone City.
After washing up, Su Chen climbed into bed to rest, his mind reflecting on the night’s encounters.
He pondered, "The Flying Thief’s bell design is quite ingenious. If I get the chance, I should make a few to try out. There are also those Thunder Bombs. It’s a pity he didn’t leave behind a recipe, otherwise, I could try crafting a few myself. Then again, I think I read about how to make something similar in my previous life. How did it go again...?"
The night passed in silence.
Time flowed like a winding stream. Three days passed in the blink of an eye, arriving at the day of Li Mo’s wedding.
Su Chen walked out of his courtyard, exuding a faint scholarly aura. He arrived at the Martial Arts Hall and joined Hong Ming and the others to attend Li Mo’s wedding. Li Mo had been waiting for a long time. After settling everyone into their seats, he bustled off to attend to his duties.
Before long, Liu Fang and Fang Rou also arrived. After greeting Hong Ming, the two women gathered in a corner.
"Junior Brother Su," Liu Fang called out softly, approaching him upon noticing his presence.
"Senior Sister Liu," Su Chen replied.
Liu Fang smiled and nodded. "That batch of medicine you ordered might still take some time to arrive."
"Understood. Thank you, Senior Sister," Su Chen said gratefully.
Liu Fang had sought him out primarily to give him a heads-up so he wouldn’t grow anxious from waiting. Seeing that Su Chen wasn’t bothered, she took Fang Rou by the arm and took her leave.
The banquet lasted late into the night. Even Su Chen, who rarely drank, indulged in a few cups of wine. After watching the crowd playfully tease the newlyweds in the bridal chamber, Su Chen headed back with Hong Ming and the others.
For the next few days, life returned to a peaceful rhythm. Aside from occasionally visiting the Martial Arts Hall, Su Chen rarely left his home.
On the third day, however, he welcomed a guest. It was Li Mo.
"Senior Brother Li Mo," Su Chen said with a smile.
"What, aren’t you going to invite me in for a seat?" Li Mo chuckled. Compared to his past self, Li Mo seemed to have matured overnight, exuding a steady and reliable aura.
"Please come in, Senior Brother!" Su Chen invited, pouring Li Mo a cup of tea.
Li Mo sized up the courtyard and shook his head. "It’s desolate, far too desolate. Junior Brother, you should really find a woman to manage your household."
Faced with this remark, Su Chen could only respond with silence.
Li Mo chuckled again and retrieved a stack of silver notes from his pocket. "I won’t tease you anymore. I came to see you today on business. Take this money."
"Senior Brother, what is the meaning of this?" Su Chen asked, his brow furrowing slightly.
"Don’t get upset. My father-in-law asked me to give this to you," Li Mo explained. "It’s a total of one hundred taels. It’s not much, but it’s a token of his appreciation. Please, just accept it."
"I cannot accept this," Su Chen refused, shaking his head.
"Why can’t you accept it?" Li Mo suddenly glared, his voice rising. "Junior Brother Su, not only did you help my father-in-law reclaim the ginseng, but you also indirectly saved my life and did me a massive favor. If you ask me, this token of appreciation isn’t even enough!"
"This..." Su Chen opened his mouth to speak, but Li Mo forcefully pushed the silver notes into his hands with a solemn expression. Left with no choice, Su Chen finally accepted the one hundred taels.
Seeing this, Li Mo beamed. He then pulled twenty taels from his pocket and chuckled, "Since you accepted my father-in-law’s money, you might as well take mine too!"
Su Chen was left speechless.
"If it weren’t for you, I probably would never have had the chance to break through in this lifetime!" Li Mo bared his arm, proudly displaying the deep red iron lines on his skin with a wide grin.
Su Chen was slightly taken aback, then quickly offered his congratulations. "Congratulations, Senior Brother!"
"It’s all thanks to you!" Li Mo scratched his head with a laugh and explained the circumstances of his breakthrough.
After taking a palm strike from the Flying Thief, Li Mo had been severely injured. It took a period of rest and recuperation to recover, and once he did, his breakthrough occurred naturally. If Su Chen hadn’t intervened back then, he likely would have charged forward to continue fighting the Flying Thief. In that scenario, he wouldn’t be breaking through; he would probably be dead.
Despite hearing this, Su Chen still firmly refused Li Mo’s money.
Seeing Su Chen’s persistence, Li Mo helplessly took the money back. The two chatted for a while longer before Li Mo finally took his leave. Before departing, he self-righteously insisted that Su Chen visit his home when he had free time, so that his wife, Zhang Wan’Er, could help him scout out a few decent women.
Su Chen felt thoroughly embarrassed. He gave a few perfunctory replies and quickly saw Li Mo to the door.
Following that, Su Chen had originally planned to use the one hundred taels of silver given by Zhang Hong to upgrade his Wind Chasing Step to the limit. To his surprise, good things came in pairs.
Liu Fang, from whom he hadn’t heard in days, suddenly sent someone to visit Su Chen, asking him to come over. Word was that the items he requested had arrived. Consequently, Su Chen grabbed his money and made his way to the Liu Mansion.
"Junior Brother, this is the Red Blood Grass you asked for. Take a look," Liu Fang said, placing thirty stalks of Red Blood Grass in front of Su Chen.
Su Chen nodded. After a brief scan, he noticed that the quality and color of the Red Blood Grass were excellent. He then took out three silver notes and handed them to Liu Fang. "Thank you so much for this, Senior Sister."
Liu Fang pulled out two silver notes from the stack and shook her head. "I will accept these two silver notes. Take the extra one back."
Su Chen gave a sheepish smile and tucked the silver note back into his pocket. Seeing this, a smile finally graced Liu Fang’s face.
"While I don’t know what you need these medicinal herbs for, Junior Brother, please remember not to consume them recklessly. Some folk remedies aren’t necessarily reliable." She assumed Su Chen had believed in some obscure prescription and offered a word of caution.
Su Chen nodded. "I understand."
A short while later, Su Chen bid Liu Fang farewell. He hurried back home, unable to wait any longer, and began preparing the Nameless Medicine.
He thought, "Last time, my body’s limit was three portions of the Nameless Medicine. I wonder if I can handle four now that I’ve practiced the Wind Chasing Step. I’ll prepare four portions first to test it out. If I can endure it, I’ll take all four at once to break through as quickly as possible!"
