Chapter 55: Chapter 56: Valuing Wealth as Life, Wei Jie’s Wrath
BANG! BANG! BANG!
The gray-robed man’s subordinates were sent flying backward like sandbags, landing in all directions. At Su Chen’s hands, they didn’t even have a chance to strike. Defenseless, they were easily knocked down.
Watching this, the gray-robed man’s eyelids twitched. "You’re all useless trash!" he bellowed.
With that, he stomped heavily on the ground, using the momentum to launch himself forward like a fierce tiger.
"Tiger Leaping Through the Forest!"
He shouted sharply, his body seemingly transforming into a giant mountain tiger. Every movement carried a violent, explosive power. His grim gaze locked onto Su Chen, already marking him in his mind as the prey to be hunted down.
"Die!"
A low growl rumbled from his throat. The gray-robed man formed his hands into tiger claws and lunged at Su Chen, bringing with him a howling wind.
Facing the attack, Su Chen remained expressionless and stood firmly in place. Feeling the incoming gust of wind, his gaze hardened. He shook his head slightly and delivered a simple slap.
SMACK! THUD! SPLAT!
From the moment the man launched his attack to being sent flying and face-planting into the dirt, only a few short seconds had passed.
SPURT!
Even though Su Chen hadn’t used his inner energy, the sheer physical force of his strike was not to be underestimated. That single slap severely injured the gray-robed man.
Blood spurted wildly from his mouth, and his face instantly turned deathly pale. He turned his head to look at the approaching Su Chen, extreme terror flashing in his eyes.
"D-don’t come any closer! I’m from the Medicine Gang! You can’t kill me!" he screamed in panic. His words were entirely filled with fear, forcing him to bring up the Medicine Gang in hopes that Su Chen would spare his life out of respect for them.
However, the only response he received was Su Chen’s merciless kick. The gray-robed man was sent flying once more. When he landed, apart from the muffled thud of impact, there wasn’t a single sound.
After dealing with the gray-robed man, Su Chen turned his gaze to the others. These men were already heavily injured. Under Su Chen’s sharp stare, they wanted to run but simply couldn’t.
"Please, don’t kill us! We don’t know anything!"
"It was Qian Ao who wanted to kill you! It has nothing to do with us! We were just following orders!"
"Spare our lives!"
Su Chen didn’t speak. It didn’t take long for the begging voices to cease. Nothing was left behind except a ground littered with corpses.
He looked at them calmly, his heart tranquil. Then, he bent down to loot the bodies.
"Huh?"
While searching one of the men, Su Chen suddenly noticed that he was clutching a few taels of broken silver in his hand. The grip was so tight that Su Chen had to exert some effort to pry his fingers apart.
"You’re already dead. Why be so attached to worldly possessions? Just give them to me," Su Chen murmured, shaking his head.
Before leaving, he gave the gray-robed man one last kick and strode away.
Much later, the corpses of the gray-robed man and his subordinates were discovered. The news reached the Medicine Gang, sending Gang Leader Jin Peng into a thunderous rage. For a time, everyone in Medicine Town was in a state of extreme paranoia, fearing for their lives.
Meanwhile, in Lanye Town.
A chilling aura of murderous intent permeated the courtyard where Wei Jie resided.
BANG!
Wei Jie vented all the frustration he had accumulated over the past few days of waiting. With a single kick, a ten-centimeter-thick stone slab instantly shattered into pieces. Still unsatisfied, he proceeded to kick and smash all the other training stones in the vicinity one by one.
In an instant, a thick cloud of dust kicked up across the courtyard. Only then did Wei Jie finally stop.
TAP TAP TAP.
At this moment, the sound of hurried footsteps approached. A subordinate walked in and reported, "Reporting to Guardian Dharma Wei. No one-armed man was found in Lanye Town today, nor were any suspicious individuals discovered."
For the past few days, he had heard the same news every single day. Wei Jie was growing tired of it, but he still said, "Understood. Keep watching."
"Yes, sir!"
After the subordinate left, he picked up a towel, wiped the fine sweat from his forehead, and sat down, his thoughts racing.
Ever since he deliberately leaked the information to the Government Office last time, he had been fully prepared in Lanye Town. Lanye Town was now completely under the covert control of the Rebirth Sect. As long as any suspicious person appeared in town, he would receive the news immediately.
He had thought that he would be able to lure in at least one of them—either the Government Office or Su Chen—but up until now, no one had shown up. His subordinates came to report every day, and the results were largely the same. There was absolutely no trace of anyone from the Government Office in Lanye Town during this period.
This left him somewhat disappointed. He had hoped to use this opportunity to crush the Government Office’s spirit, but unfortunately, they hadn’t taken the bait. And then there was Su Chen. If Su Chen had come to Lanye Town this time, Wei Jie would have made sure he never returned alive. Sadly, he hadn’t appeared either.
"But it doesn’t matter. Soon. Your retribution will arrive very soon!"
Wei Jie’s gaze was cold and gloomy.
CRACK!
The teacup in his hand shattered. Warm tea spilled through his fingers and dripped onto the stone table.
At this time, Su Chen had already returned to White Stone City from Medicine Town. After being away for more than half a month, returning home felt exceptionally welcoming.
After organizing his belongings, he went to his usual restaurant, ordered a table full of dishes, and began to eat unhurriedly. Occasionally, he would cast a glance across the street. The area that used to be the Black Water Gang’s territory had changed hands an unknown number of times by now, currently belonging to some obscure new gang.
And he himself had transformed from someone who was nearly driven to death by gangs into a Martial Artist. His strength was unfathomably greater than it used to be.
After a moment of entirely useless sentimentality, Su Chen ate and drank to his heart’s content, then stood up to leave. When paying the bill, he noticed that the prices had gone up again and couldn’t help but shake his head.
By now, the sky had grown dark. The streets were sparsely populated, appearing somewhat desolate. Braving the cold wind, Su Chen returned home.
Inside his room, candlelight flickered. A pile of broken silver lay on the table.
"From this trip to Medicine Town, besides acquiring the double-layered inner energy, I also looted forty-three taels of silver. Adding the seventy-something taels I already have on me, I’m still about eighty taels short of two hundred taels of silver," he calculated.
To Krypton Gold the Iron Cloth Shirt next time would require two hundred taels. Su Chen was still eighty taels short, but he wasn’t anxious. He already had a plan in mind.
After putting the silver away, Su Chen took out his medical books as usual and began to read.
The night passed silently.
Over the next three days, Su Chen found time to visit Hong Ming. Seeing that Hong Ming’s injuries were mostly healed, he rarely went out after that. He basically spent every day at home studying medicine and researching poisons.
Aside from an increase in his knowledge reserves, there weren’t many other changes. For now, Su Chen could still only concoct the Mind Confusing Powder. However, the potency of his Mind-Confusing Medicine had increased significantly.
He had accidentally discovered a type of herb in his medical manual that had hallucinogenic side effects. He incorporated it into the Mind Confusing Powder, and the results were surprisingly excellent. Just a tiny bit was enough to knock Blacky unconscious for a whole day and night. It was so potent that his neighbor almost thought Blacky had died and was about to bury him. Fortunately, Su Chen managed to intervene and save Blacky in time.
It was a pity that he couldn’t test it on a human; otherwise, he would have a much better understanding of the medicinal effects. Even so, he was very satisfied with his achievements over these past three days.
On this day, Su Chen changed his clothes, disguised himself once again as the one-armed Yang Guo, and left White Stone City.
He thought, "Since so many days have passed, the heat surrounding ’Yang Guo’ must have died down quite a bit. It’s about time I went out to make some money."
