Chapter 280: Black Water Under East Market
The outside hand pulled Elara’s breathing line too far.
The dark airway mark crossed the red ring.
Elara’s back arched. Her left hand struck the copper chip.
Stop.
Pela released her side of the cable.
The pale hand kept pulling from inside the black water.
Kikaru caught Elara under the shoulders. Rina put the external breathing bag over her mouth and waited for an object choice.
Elara found the printer gear.
Bag after shoulder.
Kikaru moved her shoulder once. Rina squeezed.
Air entered while the outside hand dragged the black line another quarter inch.
Skin grew over its wrist from five different directions. Pela’s burn scar appeared on the thumb. Kikaru’s sword callus formed under the first finger. Rina’s ink stain spread along the middle. Sefa’s old center puncture opened on the fourth.
The smallest finger tapped once.
The sample had learned yes.
"No," Sefa said. "That tap belongs to the hand making it."
The pale fingers closed harder.
Pela raised her fire axe.
"Cut?"
Elara touched the brass bolt, then pointed at the wrist.
Pressure one. Target wrist.
Pela struck.
The axe severed two copied fingers and buried itself in the conduit floor. Black water carried the fingers uphill. Each grew a smaller hand before reaching the wall.
"Bad cut," Pela said.
"Useful fact," Rina answered.
The new hands crawled toward the five breath objects.
Sefa kicked the objects apart. Birdseed scattered into black water. The copied hands selected seeds at random and pulled on the breathing line as if every choice belonged to Elara.
Rina threw her paper roll over the red ring.
"Object method compromised. Switch to local pressure. Elara, press one person. That person answers only your hand."
Elara put her left palm against Kikaru’s wrist.
He held the cable where her pressure placed it.
The copied fingers tapped his boots, coat, and elbow.
He ignored all pressure except the living palm on his skin.
Elara breathed.
Pela pulled the axe free and used the flat head to pin the growing hands under black water. Cutting multiplied them. Weight contained them.
At East Market, fourteen feeders drank from the Array trench.
Black water climbed their receiver spines against gravity.
The first feeder’s back opened from tail to skull. White route paint stretched across new ribs. Its front limbs lengthened until one claw reached the closed tram roof.
The other thirteen followed.
They had entered the Array as maintenance bodies small enough for tunnels.
They rose through East Market as route organisms tall enough to step over buildings.
Each spine pointed toward a different mercy opening.
Each body turned west toward Central Civic Shelter.
Tali opened the flood map.
One barrier could stop the water under East Market.
Closing it would join six drainage districts behind a single wall and give the outside sample one pressure body.
She split the closure.
North produce gate halfway.
Tram sump fully.
Cold-storage drain left open toward an empty canal.
Ward Nine gas line isolated from all three.
"Different timing," she told Soma. "No repeated close signal."
Soma sent the north gate by text, tram sump by manual bell, and cold-storage direction through Pei’s roof cloth.
The barriers moved at separate speeds.
Black water divided.
The feeder bodies divided with it.
Five followed the tram sump.
Four climbed toward produce.
Three entered the empty canal.
Two stayed over the Array and listened.
The city lost one route predator and gained four smaller fronts.
That was still better than one body.
The split had costs before anyone reached a door.
North produce gate closed on a route worker’s leg because its half-stop sensor read full closure. Her crew freed her with a paving bar and left the gate six inches higher than Tali requested.
The tram sump bell failed after its second strike. Three workers completed closure by watching the water line rather than waiting for another signal.
At the empty canal, one feeder stepped through a maintenance bridge and dropped into the lower channel. The collapse took two cold-storage runners with it. Both reached a ladder. One climbed with a broken ankle.
Tali recorded each deviation. Separate controls had prevented one pressure body and created separate places where local hands could be hurt.
People ran from East Market through doors they had held open themselves.
The water made copies among them.
A black shape climbed from the produce drain wearing Hana Bex’s voice.
"Upper hinge needs six inches."
Its hands had no burns.
Mira pointed at it from the South Ward feed.
"Hana left skin on the post. Show the hand."
The copy hid both hands and repeated the hinge sentence.
Route workers went around it.
Another shape rose beside the laundry bridge using Pei Marr’s voice.
"Wind stays west. Crossing safe."
Pei held wet cloth from the actual roof.
"Wind changed south ten minutes ago. My palms cannot hold that bridge."
The copy kept saying west.
People took the billboard crawl.
At the tram clinic, black water entered an empty patient coat and stood it upright. The coat used Iseul’s voice to call every bed toward Central Shelter.
Iseul answered from the eleven-piece palm.
"What did the anesthesia repairman say about his ventilator?"
The coat said nothing.
The repairman raised one finger from Mercy and pointed toward the reversed line in his recorded full frame.
Clinic runners left the coat behind.
The water found Jalen Price at South Ward while he carried a steel post toward Hana’s door.
It splashed his face.
Jalen stopped walking. June’s voice came from his mouth.
"My cellar is open. Twenty-three sleeping upstairs."
His crushed hand kept hold of the post.
Mira stood three feet away.
"Jalen. Show me what you called the certified route after it broke your hand."
June’s voice repeated the cellar line.
Jalen’s uninjured hand rose and made an obscene gesture at the nearest green arrow.
Mira took the post from him.
"Voice wrong. Gesture local. Jalen still inside."
She flushed his mouth with clean rainwater while he cursed through June’s voice. On the fourth rinse, his own cough returned.
The outside sample could occupy a channel without replacing the person using it.
Rina added a new rule.
"Wrong voice does not make wrong body. Verify local direction before force."
Voices were exact.
Local mistakes stayed wrong.
Tali’s split barriers held for four minutes.
The tram sump filled first. Five enlarged feeders put their claws into its grate and pulled the whole concrete box from the street.
Water escaped beneath them toward Central Shelter.
One feeder used the broken sump as a shell around its chest. Pipes became ribs. Drain chains became tendons. Its white-painted head rose above the tram wires and turned toward Caleb’s silver beams under the shelter roof.
It copied his shape without copying his scale.
The produce gate held halfway, exactly as requested. Black water climbed over its upper edge and fell in separate sheets. Hana’s steel posts kept the nearest mercy door open while copies struck it from the other side.
The empty canal took three feeder bodies and most of the cold-storage flow. Tov Ren dropped mattresses over side streets to show where water had crossed. Wet mattresses meant no route, whatever a green arrow claimed.
At Annex Four, the original pale hand changed tactics.
It released Elara’s breathing line.
Every copied finger released with it.
The black water withdrew down Kim’s hollow conduit.
Elara kept her palm on Kikaru’s wrist and chose three more breaths before trusting the absence.
Rina contained the severed hands beneath Pela’s axe head and a steel crematory tray. They kept growing skin and never gained a pulse.
"First sample contained," she said. "Not understood."
Under East Market, the escaped water reached Central Civic Shelter.
It ran uphill over the intake desks and entered the false rescue body’s open chest.
The person-shaped interior took its first breath.
