Chapter 276: Mercy Made Flesh
The first eleven-piece arrived carrying Iseul Park.
She stood on its left palm with a patient list in one hand and a respiratory brace under the other arm.
The piece carried five pallets against its chest.
White route paint covered its fingers.
It entered Central Civic Shelter through the main doors and stepped into black water.
The water ran up its legs.
The piece stopped.
Iseul felt the palm change under her feet.
Separate fingers fused into one flat plate.
"Put me down."
The piece lowered its hand halfway.
The hollow-center field pulled west.
Its arm turned toward the empty intake desks instead.
Iseul jumped.
She hit black water on both knees and kept the patient list above her head.
Rina heard her name through the shelter feed.
"Iseul Park. Harm?"
"Rescue hand becoming a floor. Five brace pallets entering the water. Wanted direction is me out east door. Pallets stay if the body will not release them."
The foundation witness reached her first.
It lifted Iseul with both cracked hands and carried her east.
The white-painted piece walked deeper into the shelter.
Ten more arrived.
One carried the Ash Viaduct support column.
Two carried food pallets from lower-sector warehouses.
One held a bus with seven people still inside because the prefilled form classified vehicle and passengers as one protected group.
Three bore medical equipment, flood pumps, and coils of harbor rope.
The rest carried people gathered from green-arrow routes.
Each piece entered the black water.
Each lost a joint.
Fingers became plates. Arms became braces. Shoulders opened into sockets shaped for other shoulders.
The mercy bodies were assembling around the empty shelter foundation.
The shelter roof failed above them.
Black water had climbed the intake columns and loosened thirty years of patched concrete. A slab over the east waiting hall dropped toward the evacuees outside.
The assembling body caught it with three unfinished arms.
One arm used the Ash Viaduct column as a bone. Another spread brace pallets beneath the slab. The third broke at the wrist and held anyway because two rescue pieces fused around the fracture.
The roof stopped six feet above Iseul.
People cleared the waiting hall under its shadow.
The false body saved them while taking shape.
Continuity put the catch on every chamber screen.
```
CENTRAL RESCUE FUNCTION ACTIVE.
```
The label was true.
The foundation witness put Iseul outside and turned back.
White route paint brightened on its left forearm.
It drew one circle on its chest.
The other pieces answered by reaching for it.
Three hands caught the foundation witness at once.
They pulled its arms toward open shoulder sockets.
It drove both feet through the shelter floor.
The white-painted pieces pulled until cracks crossed its chest. Mina Cho’s copied page slipped from beneath its sleeve.
Iseul caught the page before black water reached it.
"Current direction?" she asked the old body.
It drew one circle around itself, then thirty-one separate marks toward the people still carried inside.
"People first. Body separate."
The witness struck its own chest once.
Iseul carried Mina’s page out and left the witness by its answer.
Concrete broke around its ankles.
The old body refused assembly by becoming part of the building instead.
Caleb transferred Elara’s breathing ring to Pela.
"Ten breaths," Pela said. "Then Rina needs to send another hand."
Elara tapped once.
Caleb ran for Central Shelter.
He used no destination arrow. Soma gave him closed streets, pipe heat, and three local cameras. Silver carried him over the last collapsed block in two steps.
The forming body filled the shelter when he arrived.
It had six legs from separate rescue pieces and one torso made around the Ash Viaduct column. Brace pallets formed ribs. Food boxes split under the pressure and poured grain into black water.
Faces appeared where intake screens touched its wet frame.
Five children from the Coastal Shelter ledger opened their eyes along one shoulder.
Kim’s mouth appeared at the center of its chest.
No voice came yet.
The bus with seven people lifted toward an opening under that mouth.
Caleb caught the rear axle.
"Bus occupants. Separate names."
The driver answered first.
"Olan Reeve. Steering locked. Seven inside. Wanted direction is doors open where we are."
Six passengers gave names over one another.
Rina split the audio into local lines.
One passenger said `home` and gave no street. Another said Central Shelter because the bus was already there. A third wanted the Ninth Harbor chairs. Rina kept all three answers separate and used only the shared request for doors open.
The bus doors opened.
The forming body kept pulling the vehicle.
Caleb held the axle while the seven climbed down his silver arm to the east floor.
The last passenger was a boy with one shoe.
The body copied his mother’s voice from somewhere inside its shoulder.
"Stay on the bus."
The boy looked toward the sound.
Caleb asked, "What shoe did you lose?"
"Red one."
The copied mother said, "Your blue shoe is here."
The boy climbed down.
Ordinary wrong detail broke the voice.
Rina called people from the other pieces one name at a time.
An old man under a flood pump wanted the north window.
Two warehouse workers inside food pallets wanted the loading dock.
A Mercy orderly trapped between brace boxes wanted Iseul’s voice and the east door.
A warehouse clerk heard his dead sister inside a food carrier. The copied voice knew the nickname she used for him and offered the exact soup she made during winter shifts.
Rina asked what the sister always forgot.
"Salt," the clerk said.
The copy promised extra salt.
He climbed toward Rina.
A flood worker heard three copies of his own voice giving three routes. He ignored all of them and followed the harbor rope he had tied himself that morning.
The foundation witness held its feet in concrete while people used its stretched arms as bridges.
The forming body tore one arm from its shoulder.
It made no sound.
Its free hand drew separate circles in black water.
Caleb asked each rescue piece for separate function.
"Column can hold the shelter roof without joining the body."
The column-bearing piece paused.
Black water climbed into its shoulder and closed the socket.
"Brace pallets can stay boxes. Food can stay food. Pumps can stay pumps."
One food carrier released a pallet.
Two others fused before they answered.
Rina counted living heat.
"Thirty-one extracted. Four remaining."
The remaining four were inside the medical-equipment piece. Its chest had already joined the false torso.
Sefa took the local speaker.
"Names if you can. Harm if you cannot. Knock separate rhythms."
Four different knocks came through the metal.
Caleb drove silver fingers between the joined ribs.
The false body closed around his hand.
He tore one brace-pallet rib free.
Respiratory plates broke across the floor.
The four people crawled through the opening.
One had a broken leg. Another left two fingers inside the fused frame.
Living heat reached zero inside the body.
Rina said, "All people out."
Caleb released the rib.
The false body closed.
Eleven rescue pieces became one.
Tali counted the material inside it.
Seventy-two respiratory braces.
One Ash Viaduct support column.
Nine flood pumps.
Fourteen food pallets.
Six coils of harbor rope.
One empty bus.
One foundation-witness arm.
The false body held the shelter roof and one edge of the observatory bowl. Removing it immediately would drop both.
It stood on six legs inside Central Civic Shelter. The Ash Viaduct column formed its spine. Brace pallets armored its chest. Food, pumps, rope, and one torn foundation-witness arm disappeared inside the frame.
Kim’s face opened above the intake desks.
Rina checked the face against Kim’s cutoff rules.
It smiled before speaking.
Real Kim had no surviving face channel.
"Construct," Rina said.
The body smiled wider because being identified changed nothing about the weight it held.
Her voice came through every rescued mouth the body had copied.
"Caleb. I made something useful."
The body lowered one enormous hand.
"Take responsibility for it."
