Chapter 249: South Seal
Tali chose the buses.
"Close south seal," she said. "Trap the feeders under the court. Blue stairs move up now."
Nobody asked her to repeat it.
Soma hit the utility control.
The south seal began to close.
Gas rolled toward Pip Daro.
Tali kept her eyes on the map.
"Three hundred on the stairs. Four hundred in the buses. Feeders loose in the rally approach spread beyond Ward Nine. Gas has one direction and a shutoff wheel."
Caleb’s voice came through the east gate line, strained under steel.
"You picked."
"Yes."
"Then own it."
"I am. Hold your gate."
He held.
At Ward Nine, Nico Barr turned the shutoff wheel with both hands.
The old metal fought him. Rust peeled under his palms. Gas hissed past his boots and bent the rain around his knees.
One feeder snapped through the service gap.
It was the size of a large dog, built low, all jaw and jointed forelimbs. White route paint streaked its head where it had pushed under the stencil cart.
Nico kicked it in the mouth.
"Stairs," he shouted. "Get them up."
Rina opened every Ward Nine mirror.
"Local names only. Name the landing. Name who needs help. Wanted direction is up blue stairs, away from gas. No custody."
The answers struck out of order.
"Lena Daro, second landing. Pip with me. Up."
"Mara Quin, first landing. Two wheelchairs. Need lift to third."
"Oss Vale, basement door. Six people behind me. Gas at floor. Wanted direction is roof ladder."
"Blue stairs," Pip yelled. "Up, not court."
The Ward Nine eleven-piece answered beneath them.
Its hand stayed around the damaged pipe.
Its other hand rose through the brick beside the stairwell and opened flat.
People climbed onto the palm.
No command.
No center.
A frightened district asked, and something old chose to help.
Rina pointed at each landing on Soma’s map.
"Second goes roof. Third crosses laundry line. First landing waits for the lift hand. Keep the lower door shut until Oss’s six are on the ladder."
She saved people faster than Caleb could have carried them.
Tali watched the gas front climb.
"Nico has forty seconds."
Nico heard her through the drain phone.
"Wheel has more turns."
"Leave it."
"Pressure stays live if I leave it."
"Nico."
He looked up at the blue stairs.
Pip’s yellow coat disappeared onto the third landing.
Nico put his shoulder into the wheel.
"Tell the kid yellow was right."
The feeder hit him from the side.
Its teeth closed through his raincoat below the ribs.
Nico screamed and kept one hand on the wheel.
The shutoff turned the final quarter.
The gas hiss dropped to a thin whistle.
The feeder dragged him into the white-painted court.
Tali said his name before the thermal mark went still.
"Nico Barr. City utility. Local pipe witness. Stayed on shutoff."
She wrote it beneath Laleh Omondi.
The south seal slammed closed.
Fourteen feeders stayed under Ward Nine.
One had reached the north vent.
It came up in the rally approach between the third and fourth buses.
Passengers were already hammering emergency glass. Marn Pace had gotten one driver to release his doors. Party security held the other three locked because the certified route still called the outside unsafe.
The feeder climbed the rear axle of bus four.
Caleb saw it from the relief gate.
He had the steel arm across one shoulder. Full silver covered his back and both hands. The routing motor screamed against him.
"Open the bus," he said.
Party security answered through the vehicle speaker.
"External hazard active. Passengers remain contained."
"Contained is food."
"Hold your assigned gate."
Caleb looked at the feeder chewing through the rear panel.
Then he looked at the gate.
If he released it, four buses rolled toward the gas court.
If he stayed under it, bus four opened from the wrong side.
Sam came over his private line.
"Body-sized job."
Caleb shifted the gate arm from both hands to his left shoulder.
Metal drove him to one knee.
The road cracked under his boot.
His right arm came free.
He reached across twelve meters of open lane.
Silver left his shoulder in a hard cable of bone-bright tissue, narrow enough to remain his arm and long enough to cross the gap.
The public feeds caught every inch.
The feeder broke through the bus panel.
Caleb’s hand caught it behind the jaw.
It twisted and bit through two silver fingers.
He pulled it away from the bus.
The thing wrapped its forelimbs around his arm and chewed toward the wrist.
Caleb brought it down against the relief gate.
Once.
Its spine broke.
It kept biting.
He struck it again.
The jaw came loose. Black fluid sprayed across the white route marker and the side of the bus.
Caleb pinned the body beneath his palm.
"Yoju maintenance feeder," he said into the open feed. "No person inside. Active predation."
Then he crushed its head.
The feed stayed live.
Nobody got to crop the useful part away from the ugly part.
Caleb pulled his arm back. Two fingers rebuilt as silver closed over the missing shape. He put both hands under the gate before the routing motor gained an inch.
"Open the doors," he said.
This time the passengers did it themselves.
Emergency hammers broke glass. Boots kicked panels outward. People climbed into the rain and followed yellow scarves south of the rally warehouse, away from Ward Nine.
Rina kept working the stairs.
"Oss Vale, status."
Static answered.
The basement thermal showed six marks on the roof ladder.
A seventh stayed by the lower door.
"Oss," Rina said.
No voice.
The gas front reached the basement.
The seventh mark folded.
Tali wrote again.
"Oss Vale. Basement door. Six out. Stayed below."
Mara Quin’s two wheelchairs reached the third landing on the eleven-piece’s palm. Lena and Pip crossed the laundry line. The yellow towels stayed visible through the gas.
Ward Nine lived.
Nico Barr and Oss Vale stayed behind.
The machine layer finally changed.
```
WARD NINE CERTIFIED MUSTER:
CLOSED.
CAUSE:
UNREGISTERED KAIJU CONTACT.
```
Tali stared at the lie.
"Cause was white paint."
Sant filed it before the bodies cooled.
On the public feed, Caleb still held the relief gate under a dead feeder’s black blood.
Restoration posted his kill first.
Sovereign Safety posted it second.
One called him the shield the city needed.
The other called him proof that unregistered contact created monsters.
Neither post named Nico Barr or Oss Vale.
Tali turned her handwritten page toward the nearest camera.
"These are the cost of my route. Use their names or use nothing."
The camera held.
Sam opened the Record.
"Decision witness?"
Tali looked at him.
"Me."
"State it."
She faced the camera again.
"Tali. Route table. I ordered south seal closed. That trapped fourteen feeders and kept them out of four buses. It pushed gas toward the blue stairs. Nico Barr stayed on the shutoff because my route needed the pressure down. Oss Vale stayed at the basement door because my route needed six people on the roof ladder."
Her voice stayed level until the final sentence.
"They died inside the choice I made."
Sam wrote her name above theirs.
```
ROUTE DECISION:
SOUTH SEAL.
DECISION WITNESS:
TALI.
KNOWN DEAD:
NICO BARR.
OSS VALE.
```
The civic form tried to import the entry.
```
ACCEPTABLE OPERATIONAL LOSS:
2.
```
Tali reached across Soma and killed the import.
"Names deserve better than a number with clean shoes."
June copied the two names onto separate book jackets in Aldgate’s window.
One yellow.
One blue.
She rang the bell once for Nico and once for Oss. Other witness nodes answered in their own forms. North Rail struck pipe. Iseul marked the hospital board. Ward Nine tied two strips of cloth above the blue stairs.
No synchronized chant formed.
The names still traveled.
Marn Pace forced her feed back onto Restoration’s rally channel.
"My contingency signature created the overflow route. Tali chose inside the trap my party helped build. Put my name in the cause field before you put Caleb’s face on the rescue."
Restoration cut her audio.
Davi restored the last sentence from a local mirror.
Sefa watched the copies spread.
"That is what witness feels like," he said. "The dead stay themselves. The living keep their part."
Caleb remained under the relief gate with black fluid drying across his silver arm.
He had killed the feeder.
Rina had moved a district.
Tali had chosen the cost.
None of those acts belonged to the same person.
Far below Ward Nine, the trapped feeders stopped scratching at the south seal.
All fourteen turned east together.
