Chapter 370: The Ones Who Do Not Ask

  • Next Chapter

Lucian veered left as the mid-bridge crowd thickened, Istra keeping to his pace without question. Sera remained to his right, still muttering about the archive, still marked by the city with the habit of walking alongside him and still refusing to fall half a step behind.

"you keep choosing tight lanes."

she said

"Crowds make clean grabs harder."Until the crowd decides that it does not matter."

Istra’s eyes swept the buildings ahead. "Then we do not offer them a stable target"

They passed a tea stall, long since passed its opening time. The owner was gone, a single cup half drawn up on the board. Further on, a woman who’d been arguing price a moment before was not there, her buyer still holding out money in confusion, already working towards not inquiring.

Lucian felt the shift in the air. Not the slow pressure of surveillance building. Something already set in motion

"Sera"

She turned her head. "What?"

A body struck against her shoulder from within the throng. Another hand seized her wrist and yanked. It was a practiced movement, quick. A detour meant to separate one from the crowd while it halted those around.

Sera drove the hand that gripped her into her attacker’s throat. She shouted, a fury of sound with no words in it.

The lane separated around them. Lucian had the second pickpocket by his coat, driving him back against the wall. Istra blocked the side movement with her rod out, the light low, just enough to serve as warning.

The third attacker never finished his run, seeing the failure of the first two and pulling back into the safety of the crowd with his hands raised.

Sera stood there, breathing heavily, her wrist a bruised red. "They went for me"

"Yes"

"not you"

Istra observed the disrupted lane. "You are difficult to take. She is not. It is all method"

Sera turned to Lucian then to the side stair, to her hands. "i’ve grown very tired of being the convenient threshold"

A short Watch signal sliced through from the far end of the bridge. Not a rescue, but a crowd control directive. Those that had tried the pickpocketing maneuver were already moving on, ignored by those around them who wanted nothing to do with any part of what had happened.

Lucian got Sera off the bridge, into a service access between warehouses. Istra took the rear

Sera turned her back to the wall and laughed, a hollow sound without humor in it. "I promised myself i’d stay until the access to the archive, then until the secure corner beyond. They pick at me, openly, for walking with you in daylight"

Lucian stood in front of her, "you can still separate. We adjust your path, take distance and you are no longer useful to them"

Istra did not temper it. "if you truly separate. If half-measures are offered, men are prepared"

Sera focused on the floor. When she looked up the apprehension was gone, though something deeper had taken its place.

"I was marked the moment I saw the market using my name alongside his in Keth-Arel. I can disappear and hope they lose interest, or I can stop pretending to stumble and act as if my skin might not be peeled from these bones"

Lucian regarded her. "Which is it?"

"I am neither your old friend nor a soldier. I’ve made my bones in alleys and between shifts"

She indicated him, "but I am also not prey for you to lead into your pit"

She moved away from the wall.

I will stay. Not as bait, not as your possession. I’ve already paid the price to enter your game and I would not waste it."

Istra measured her. "You place yourself deeper in"

"I am already in"

said Sera, "I’m simply ceasing to pretend otherwise"

Lucian nodded. "You are no longer available to separate at the next turn, then. You are in the line"

Sera exhaled. "Good. Because if I’m staying the next plan involves me. I’m not going to continue existing in these periphery events"

A young voice called from the mouth of the cut, careful not to enter.

Message for the seal-breaker. Ash Vale indicates the girl may be taken at any opportunity. Authority recommends custody as protection. Cael’s people suggest the next attempt indicate loyalty. Selection of better alternatives suggested for future endeavors

The footsteps faded.

Sera closed her eyes for a second. "They’re quick"

"They are afraid of slipping the noose. So they pull every thread they can grasp"

Lucian turned towards the deeper lanes of Varn Thal. "Then we stop feeding them easy prey. We move in concert. We take our turns at rest and the next place we walk into will be of our choosing"

Sera fell in next to him, no longer half a step back

"If i’m killed by extension of this choice, I’m going to be very angry"

"If you are killed by extension of this choice"

said Lucian, "it will not be because we failed to value your place in it"

Istra led them off the open cut, into a service way beneath the next set of terraces. Beyond them the city chattered on, but ahead pressure was building.

Lucian and the others had barely cleared the mid-bridge when the first signs of real pursuit showed themselves in the way the lanes ahead began to empty at the wrong time of day. Istra led them down a service stair into a quieter cut between storage halls, where the noise of Varn Thal faded to a distant hum, and it was there that the three groups found them without any need for scouts or warnings.

The Authority woman arrived first, her gray coat still clean despite the lower streets, and she stopped at a distance that made it clear she expected to be heard. "Lucian Black, you have been identified as the source of the recent Lord-level fluctuation, and the review will not wait while you decide whether to cooperate. Submit to formal custody now, and the houses will be blocked from any claim; refuse, and every recovery team in this city gets the same open season."

Before Lucian could answer, the Cael-seat remnant stepped in from the side lane, Orlen among them but silent while their leader, a woman with the silver mark of the old ranks, took the front. "You already know the truth from the archive, so there is no point pretending this is still a lower-plane matter. Walk with us and we keep you out of their freeze; we give you protection and the records that still exist, and we treat you as part of the line rather than evidence to be locked away."

The third came last, the Ash Vale man with his practiced smile and the kind of confidence that came from knowing he was about to make everything worse. "Both of them are selling the same collar with different names. Come with us and we pay you, we shield you, and we make sure Cael’s old seat stays broken so no one gets to use it against the rest of us. Refuse, and you stay the prize that every side will keep tearing at until there is nothing left."

Sera had heard enough. She stepped up beside Lucian, her voice steady even though her hands were still shaking from the bridge. "You all talk like he is already yours to divide. He is not."

Istra stayed quiet, letting the three offers hang in the air while the distant noise of Varn Thal continued above them. Lucian looked at each of them in turn, the Authority liaison with her sealed case, the remnant woman with her silver mark, and the Ash Vale man with his smile, and the choice sat there without any soft edges left on it.

"I refuse all of it," he said. "No custody, no protection that comes with a claim, no deal that turns me into leverage. I will find the rest of Cael’s truth on my own, and the next time any of you come for me it will not be with terms."

The Authority woman closed her case with a sharp click. The remnant group exchanged looks that promised they were not done. The Ash Vale man only laughed again and stepped back into the lane with the kind of ease that said he had expected the refusal and already had the next move ready.

Istra watched them go, then turned to Lucian. "You just made this much harder."

"I know," he said.

Sera pulled the cloak tighter. "Then we move before they come back with more than offers."

They left the covered walk together, the three of them walking deeper into Varn Thal while the city adjusted around the fact that the seal-breaker had refused every hand that tried to close on him. Behind them the offers were already turning into plans. Ahead, the road only got narrower.
