Chapter 364: Morning Claim

Morning came early on neutral ground.

Twice on the outer door, a guard struck. She did not wait. ’Hearing call. Outer court hall. Now.’

Lucian was already half-awake. Sera sat hunched upright along the bench with the borrowed cloak draped around her shoulders, Istra pacing the entrance as though she had not slept at all the night before

’And’

Istra said. ’Together.’

They crossed the yard beneath thin light. More kept watch than the night before; officers perhaps, or brokers - someone wore house colors beneath a dull coat as though that might trick anyone left looking. The word had gone out that seal-breaker from the lower city was about to be called in.

Sera stayed close to Lucian’s side. ’If this goes bad what’s the play?

’Remain upright, ’

Lucian told her, ’do not offer reason to restrain.’

’That’s not a play.’

’The opening.’

The outer court hall was a broad, bare chamber paved in stone and stripped of display, save long table set ahead of a throne-like chair. Three line officers sat along its length. To Lucian’s right, Authority Adjutant Soren stood with two grey coat officers on his flanks while on his left a Veyrn man took his place with a woman in Sallis blue. Back further along the walls, Orlen lingered without seat nor welcome at the table.

Lucian was directed to the centre floor in front of the table while Istra took station at his side. Sera was ordered to take up position at their backs with no comment offered, though her expression made it clear what she thought of the idea

The woman in middle spoke first. Her voice was dry and accustomed to repeating the same script. ’This hearing addresses the Free marked Lucian present from Keth-Arel under temporary outer court shelter following violent conflict against Authority seals. Claims have been offered and shall be received in turn.’

Soren stepped forward. ’Authority requests freeze and transfer pending anomaly assessment. The subject concealed latent skill upon working under civil authority, breached lawful binding and fled lawful possession. This is not a case of unskilled Free labor but of privilege class disturbance.’

The Veyrn man nodded. ’Veyrn extends recovery claim. The subject was identified within our district network prior to unlawful extraction from Keth-Arel. Subject is releasable to house detention pending superior judgment.’

It was the Sallis woman who responded to this. ’Any recovery along transit acquisition lines falls under joint review. Sallis will not accept sole Veyrn possession.’

One of the line officers turned to Orlen. ’You filed notice but not claim.’

The man inclined his head. ’True. My circle expresses desire for the subject not be reduced to house property nor Authority inventory pending proper Cael-seat interrogation. We request continuance and guarded review.’

’You’re all bickering over him like cargo, ’Sera muttered from behind Lucian.

’Indeed, ’Lucian said.

The middle officer turned to him. ’You may reply. Keep it brief.’

Lucian moved a step closer. ’I will not be delivered to the houses. I will not accept Authority freeze as if I am freight. I fled Keth-Arel because they were prepared to make me property in smoother words. Question me if you must, but do not hand me over.’

Soren’s eyes narrowed. ’Answer by submitting to inspection.’

’I answer by taking this position , ’Lucian said, ’which is farther than your process will carry you without my agreement.’

A murmur of discontent rolled through the hall.

Istra spoke before it could build. ’He was brought to neutral ground by my transport after attempted seizure. Outer court shelter was given. If this line seeks to transfer under split claims, you are not adjudicating but waging conflict on your own floor.’

The officer on Lucian’s left frowned. ’That sounds like a threat.’

’It is a warning, ’Istra said, ’and there is a difference.’

The middle officer raised a hand and the murmuring died.

The line rejects sole house custody. The claims are in conflict and the subject’s condition is not resolved for private recovery.’

The Veyrn man’s jaw tightened. The Sallis woman snapped her folder shut with more force than needed.

’Authority freeze, ’Soren said, ’is still cleanest course.’

There was a pause as Orlen spoke from his place further back.

’Clean for you, perhaps.’

The middle officer turned away from both of them to consider Lucian. ’You broke sealed labor conditions before witnesses. That cannot be ignored in favor of dockyard dispute. Likewise, neutral ground is not auction site. We will not name you property of highest bidder simply because they came first with contracts.’

Lucian waited.

The officer tapped her wrist. ’The decision for now is that shelter is granted an extra day under further examination. No transfer, no private extraction. Authority may submit more complete claim by evening. House claims are stayed. Any outside attempt to remove the subject shall be considered breach of line authority.’

Soren was anything but satisfied. ’One day is negligible.’

’Write then, ’the officer said.

The Veyrn man swarmed back through the watching crowd and vanished without another word. The Sallis woman followed, slower but no less determined. Orlen remained where he stood, his stare already on Lucian even as the thought passed that perhaps the last night’s answer still held between them

Sera exhaled something of a laugh. ’So you’ve another day.’

’Yes, ’Lucian said.

’That doesn’t feel like a victory.’

’It is not. It is time, ’Istra said.

They were escorted back towards the outer hall corridors through more careful eyes than yesterday. Two guards kept station well back from the group as if to remind that the watch had grown keener.

When at last they had space to sit near the bench from which they had risen, Sera laid her weary bones down onto it. ’I’m always waiting for someone to treat you like an individual instead of a prize.’

’I suspect that will not occur here, ’Lucian said.

Istra turned her gaze back to the high ground stairs. ’Use your time. If Authority returns with stronger freeze order, the line will not hold twice. If the houses cannot take you by claim, they will move to intimidate elsewhere. And Orlen’s people will not stand forever as you decide which master to serve.’

Lucian inclined his head. ’Then we need some means to leave these grounds other than transfer and surrender.’

’Anything that gets you away costs something, ’Istra said

’I will pay, ’Lucian said.

’Aye, with what? Yard-treasure? , ’Sera asked.

Lucian’s gaze lingered on the pale towers and waiting faces across the yard. ’With whatever buys us a chance not to stand this room again and let them decide what I may be.’

Cael’s voice lingered at the edge of his thoughts.

One day is short. Use it. If you stay on their cycle, you walk away in chains with a better shaped name.

Lucian knew that. He understood what the hearing had bought him. Authority would continue to write, the houses to watch and patiently wait for him to crawl, begging for purchase, to a house that would not hold him but sell him to something far worse

One day. He meant to use it.
