Chapter 604: Chapter 604
"Fifty-eight minutes," she said.
Satou was already moving toward the mechanism.
He stopped after two steps.
Something in the ambient temporal field had changed in the moment the dimensional pocket sealed.
Not the mechanism. Not the working. Something smaller and closer — the specific resonance of temporal energy without a host, the signature of a power that had just been stripped from its owner and was dispersing into the ambient field, the temporal substrate absorbing back what it had once given to a being who no longer had the connection to hold it.
Chronus’s power, stripped and then sealed, was bleeding into the environment.
Satou stood still and felt it.
The residue of Richard was in that dispersing power. He could feel it — the specific signature he had carried since the dream realm fight, the thirty percent that had become part of him when he consumed what Merc Assault had left behind. The echo of that signature in the dispersing temporal energy was faint.
But present.
He looked at Loki.
Loki was looking at the sealed space where the pocket had been. His expression was the expression of someone who had finished doing the thing they had been planning to do and found that finishing it felt less like completion and more like a specific kind of quiet.
"Loki," Satou said.
Loki looked at him.
"Do you mind," Satou said, "if I take the rest of it."
It wasn’t the power he was asking about. Not primarily. Loki understood this. The power was incidental — Satou’s reserves had no meaningful use for what was dispersing into the ambient field from a half-powered Tenth Seat’s stripped capabilities.
It was the Richard.
The last place Richard’s signature existed in any form — the specific thirty percent that had been outside Chronus, that Satou had consumed from Merc Assault, now echoing in the dispersing power of what Loki had stripped.
Loki looked at him for a long moment.
Then he looked at the dispersing field.
’He wants to make sure there’s nothing left,’ Loki thought. ’Nothing remaining. Not the power. The last echo of what Richard was.’
He understood this.
He understood it specifically.
"Yes," Loki said.
Satou turned to the dispersing temporal energy.
[DEVOURING]
—------------
It was not like consuming the Ancient God.
Khar’razoth had been a divine consciousness, vast and ancient and furious, fighting the consumption every step of the way — a battle within a battle, the act of eating something that had never been eaten before and was violently opposed to the experience.
This was different.
The temporal power dispersing into the ambient field was not conscious. It was not fighting. It was simply energy without a host, bleeding into the environment the way a wound bled — not choosing to bleed, just doing what energy without a container did.
It came into him quietly.
The temporal substrate’s residue — centuries of Chronus’s application and refinement, the accumulated methodology of the most sophisticated temporal practitioner in the demon realm, dispersed into the field and re-concentrated as he drew it in. Not organized. Not packaged. Raw.
His mana channels processed it.
His existing capability structure received it.
[DEVOURING — COMPLETE]
[TEMPORAL COMPREHENSION ENHANCED] [TEMPORAL PERCEPTION UPGRADED: WEAK → MODERATE] [TIME DILATION UPGRADED: MODERATE → ADVANCED] [TEMPORAL ECHO UPGRADED: RICHARD’S FOUNDATION → SATOU’S OWN] [NEW ABILITY ACQUIRED: TEMPORAL FIELD READING — MODERATE] [NEW ABILITY ACQUIRED: CHRONOLOGICAL IMPRINT — BASIC]
He stood in the Ashvale remnant with the last of Chronus’s dispersed power integrated and the notifications settling into the background of his awareness.
’That’s not why I did it,’ he thought.
He looked at his hands.
The specific signature he’d been carrying since the dream realm fight — the echo of Richard, the thirty percent that had been outside, the temporal trace that had let him sense the direction Chronus had gone — was quieter now.
Not gone. Something of it would always be in him. The techniques derived from it were his own now, fully integrated, genuinely his rather than borrowed.
But the specific trace of it — the fingerprint of something that had once been separate from Chronus and had been Satou’s only marker for the Tenth Seat’s location — was gone.
Richard was gone.
Not from having been consumed — that had happened in the dream realm fight. From having been dispersed by Loki’s stripping and drawn in by Satou’s consumption. The last echo of what Richard had been, turned into capability and integrated and taken off the board entirely.
’You deserved better than all of this,’ Satou thought.
He was thinking about a soul that had spent its existence as thirty percent of someone else’s power. As an externalized fragment, made for a specific purpose, held outside against the natural inclination of things to remain whole.
’You deserved to have been a whole thing on your own.’
He didn’t know if Richard had thought that. The absorbed intelligence from Merc Assault’s memories hadn’t given him enough of Richard’s interiority to know.
He looked at the mechanism.
Fifty-six minutes to independence threshold.
’Later,’ he thought. ’Later.’
He crossed to the mechanism and found the fracture and reached into it with the specific comprehension that the temporal field reading ability had just given him — the ability to feel the inscription layers clearly rather than approximate them.
Fifth layer. The depth he’d reached.
He found the sixth.
[VOID FANG + ABSOLUTE SEVERANCE + TEMPORAL FIELD READING]
’Two more,’ he thought. ’And then it’s over.’
He drove in.
—---------
Loki watched Satou work on the mechanism.
The fourteen warriors had stopped pretending to have tactical positioning and had simply arranged themselves in the clearing the way people arranged themselves when the fight was over and nobody knew what to do with their hands. Some were looking at the mechanism. Some were looking at where the pocket had sealed. Some were looking at Seraphina, who was standing slightly apart from everyone and being very still in the way she was still when she was managing pain without expressing it.
Loki wasn’t looking at any of that.
He was looking at the space where Chronus had been.
The dirt where his knees had been. The specific displaced quality of the ground where something significant had recently been and was now not.
’Two hundred years,’ he thought. ’Two hundred years of Morgana keeping him away from Vael’kira. Two hundred years and the one morning she left—’
He stopped that thought.
