6:20AM.

Zane pushed through the training ground doors and the morning hit him the same way it had the past two days. Cool air. Empty arenas. The specific quiet of a place that hadn’t been woken up yet.

Maren was already there.

Same corner. Same pad. She was mid-drill when he arrived . Not the movement repetitions from the first morning or the burst activation sequences from yesterday. Something new. She was combining both. Short Overdrive burst, move, cut the activation, move again, re-engage. Chaining movement and output together into something that looked less like training and more like the early skeleton of an actual combat style.

Zane stopped at the edge of the pad and watched for a moment before she noticed him.

’She’s already building on what she showed me yesterday,’ he thought. ’She didn’t just teach it. She kept developing it after.’

’I know,’ Zane thought. ’I’m watching.’

Maren came out of a burst sequence and caught him standing there. She didn’t stop moving immediately . Finished the rep, cut the activation clean before the fatigue window, then straightened up.

"You’re on time," she said.

"I’m always on time," Zane replied, dropping his bag at the edge of the pad.

"Yesterday you were two minutes late."

"I was strategically delayed."

The corner of her mouth moved. Not quite a smile. Something adjacent to it.

She went back to her drill.

Zane activated Overdrive at minimum output and started his own movement work beside her. Low intensity. Just enough to feel the enhancement without burning the activation window before it was useful.

Four seconds. That was all he had at current output . Barely enough to string two meaningful movements together before the enhancement dropped and he was back to baseline. Maren’s window was ten at full bearer output. His was four. The gap between original and copy laid out in the most humbling way possible.

’Four seconds,’ he thought. ’I need to make every one of them count.’

Which meant no wasted motion. No holding the activation while he thought about what to do next. By the time he’d decided the window would already be closing. Activate. Move. Cut. Reset. Chain.

He ran three short bursts back to back using the hold technique Maren had shown him.

Burst. Drop to zero percent. Hold. Re-engage.

Smoother than yesterday. The gap between bursts was closing.

’Getting there,’ he thought.

『 At acquaintance tier your window extends to 6 seconds. At a genuinely close tier 9 seconds. Improve the relationship. Improve the clock. 』

They ran parallel for ten minutes without speaking.

It was the same comfortable silence as yesterday. Easier than it had any right to be for two people who had exchanged maybe thirty sentences total across three mornings.

Then the system notification appeared.

『 Objective: Push Maren familiarity to 35% before leaving the training grounds 』

『 Reward: Overdrive output ceiling unlocked to 60% 』

『 Penalty: Inability to use Overdrive for 48 hours 』

『 Time Limit: 40:00 』

Zane looked at the timer.

39:47.

’Of course,’ he thought.

He kept moving. Didn’t break his drill pattern. Just let the silence run for another two minutes while he thought about how to do this without making it obvious he was doing it.

The answer was not to make it a thing.

"The burst chaining," he said, not looking at her. "You added movement integration."

Maren didn’t break her rep. "Yesterday’s session gave me an idea."

"It’s cleaner than what you were doing before."

"It’s not clean yet," she said. "The transition between cut and re-engage has a half second gap I can’t close. If someone times that gap in a rank trial it’s a problem."

Zane ran through it mentally. Half second gap between cutting the activation and being able to fire the next burst. At 40% output that gap was manageable. At 60% which he was about to unlock if this quest completed . it would need to be closed entirely or it became a liability in both their hands.

"What if you don’t fully cut it," he said. "Instead of dropping the activation to zero between bursts you drop it to maybe ten percent. Below the fatigue threshold but not off entirely. Keep the channel open. Reduces the re-engage delay."

Maren stopped moving.

She stood there for a second with the particular stillness of someone running a calculation.

Then she tried it.

Burst. Drop to ten percent. Hold. Re-engage.

The gap closed by half.

She did it again. Same result.

"Hm," she said quietly.

’That counted,’ Zane thought.

『 4% remaining to threshold. 』

Close. Four percent away. He kept his expression neutral and went back to his own drill.

They worked in silence for another few minutes. Then Maren spoke without looking up.

"How are you doing that?"

Zane kept moving. "Doing what."

"Moving like that." She glanced sideways at him briefly. "You’re Sigilless. But your reaction time and output when you move it doesn’t match."

’Here we go,’ he thought.

Good fundamentals," he said. "I’ve been training longer than most people in this intake started thinking about it."

Maren glanced at him sideways. "You know being Sigilless means you have to work twice as hard as everyone else just to stay relevant. Most people in your position wouldn’t even bother showing up to morning drills."

"Most people in my position didn’t show up at all," Zane said.

She held his gaze for a second.

"Fair point," she said, and went back to her drill.

Maren held his gaze for exactly two seconds.

She didn’t push it.

’She doesn’t believe me,’ he thought. ’She’s just decided not to ask again yet.’
