Chapter 55| Ten Days
Chapter 55: Chapter 55| Ten Days
Zane opened his eyes at 5:58 AM.
The timer was the first thing he saw.
Not Gerald wheezing. Not Dex’s lamp still on from last night. Not the ceiling he’d been staring at for six weeks.
The timer. Sitting in the corner of his vision exactly where daily quest notifications usually appeared. Except this wasn’t a daily quest.
『 BOUND TARGET QUEST — Time Remaining: 9 days 21 hours 43 minutes 』
’Already burning,’ he thought.
He sat up.
Dex was face down on his bed. Boots still on from last night. The specific sleeping posture of someone who had sat down for a moment and never made it back up.
’Lazy asshole’ Zane muttered as he got up quietly.Took his bath. Pulled on his training gear. Grabbed his bag.
He looked at the timer one more time.
’Nine days,’ he thought. ’Twenty one hours. Let’s go.’
He left the dorm and went straight to the training ground.
The training grounds at 6:20 AM were the same as they always were.
Composite floor. Reinforced wall. A few early risers scattered across the arenas. Mostly second and third years running their own sessions, the kind who had been doing this long enough that early mornings felt like a choice rather than a discipline. The first year section was quieter at this hour. Most of them still asleep.
Just Maren in their corner. Same as always.
Maren was already on the far pad.
Zane stopped at the edge of the grounds.
She was running burst sequences in her fitted training gear. The slim kind that had been a recurring significant problem since the first morning he’d walked into this corner and found her already there. Her hair tied back. Focused. Completely in her own world.
He looked at her for exactly three seconds longer than he normally would have.
’56%,’ he thought. ’ She was the closest to him by a significant margin.’
The system surfaced.
『 Daily Training Quest — 50 Impact Breaker reps 』
『 Reward: Activation speed +0.03 seconds 』
’Still giving me daily quests,’ Zane thought. ’Even when I’m not actively training toward anything specific.’
『 The system does not pause because your objectives shifted. Physical maintenance is ongoing regardless of active quest status. Consistency compounds. 』
’So you’re saying do the reps anyway,’ Zane thought.
『 I’m saying the reps were always for you. Not for the quest. 』
Zane looked at the wall. Then he walked over.
She glanced up when he arrived. Registered him, waved then went back to her drill.
Normal. Routine. Six weeks of the same corner making everything feel like it had always been this way.
Except the timer was running in the corner of his vision and he was looking at her differently than he had yesterday and she hadn’t noticed yet.
’Yet,’ he thought.
He moved to the reinforced wall and started his reps.
Palm contact. Pressure. Intent. Activation contained.
0.82 seconds.
0.81.
He kept going. Methodical. Eyes forward. Peripheral awareness on Maren the way it always was at this hour. Except today there was a specific quality to it that hadn’t been there yesterday morning and he was very aware of the difference.
Twenty reps in Maren called a rest.
She sat cross legged on the pad and drank from her water bottle. Zane kept going at the wall for another ten reps then walked back.
She looked at him.
’There it is,’ Zane thought.
The look wasn’t the calculating stillness. Not the recalibrating softness from the post-trial days. Something else. The specific expression of someone who has been training beside another person long enough to clock when their energy is different without being able to name what changed.
"You’re off today," she said.
"I’m fine," Zane said. " Just mild thinking, nothing much".
"No I mean it you’re definitely off," she said again. Not pushing. Just stating it the way she stated things, directly, without needing him to confirm it.
He sat down on the edge of the pad.
’How do you tell someone,’ he thought, ’that a system running on your previous life’s desires has issued a ten day countdown and they’re the first name on the list.’
He almost laughed at the ceiling of his own head.
’You don’t,’ he thought. ’You never tell her that. Ever. Under any circumstances.’
"Slept badly," he replied.
She looked at him for one more second. Then nodded once and went back to her drill.
He watched her activate Overdrive at minimum output. The familiar surge. The one he’d been running in his own slots for weeks. Her version. The original. Ten second window, nine second cut, exactly the way she’d taught him without knowing she was teaching him.
The timer ticked.
『 BOUND TARGET QUEST — Time Remaining: 9 days 20 hours 51 minutes 』
’One thing at a time,’ he thought.
He finished his reps.
『 DAILY QUEST COMPLETE 』
『 Impact Breaker — Activation speed +0.03 seconds 』
『 New activation time: 0.79 seconds 』
’0.79,’ he thought. ’Finally dropping again.’
He stood up and dusted off his hands.
Maren was finishing her last sequence. Cut the activation clean at nine seconds the way she always did. Straightened up. Reached for her bag.
Glanced at him one more time with that expression.
"Whatever it is," she said. "You’ll figure it out."
She picked up her bag.
"Bye," she said. "I’ll head out first."
"Alright," Zane said.
They waved at each other. Clean. Simple. The specific casual farewell of two people who had been doing this long enough that goodbyes didn’t need ceremony.
She walked out.
Zane stood in their corner alone.
’Whatever it is,’ he thought.
’Yeah,’ he thought. ’Working on it.’
He picked up his bag and followed her out of the training grounds at a reasonable distance. Not following exactly. Just heading the same direction toward the academic block the way they always did after the session ended.
She glanced back once when she heard his footsteps.
He gave her a brief nod.
She turned back around and kept walking.
Same direction. Different pace. The specific comfortable distance of two people who had stopped needing to walk together to be heading the same way.
