Chapter 40| Round Two
Chapter 40: Chapter 40| Round Two
Zane checked his communicator as he walked into Arena Two.
3:15 PM. Mid-end of the event. The trials had been running for nearly four hours and the building’s energy reflected it. The early excitement settled into something more focused, more tired, more real. Students who’d been eliminated were watching from the rails with the specific attention of people who had nothing left to lose in the bracket and could finally just watch.
He walked onto the floor.
The arena had the same composite floor. Same observation rails. Same lighting rigs overhead. But the energy sitting in the space was different. More heavier, more expectant. Word had moved through the building fast the way word always moved in a place where people had nothing to do between their own matches except watch and talk.
The Sigilless kid had won Round One.
Zane walked onto the floor and felt the rail before he saw it. More people than his first match. Students who’d finished their own brackets gravitating toward Arena Two specifically. Second years who’d been casually watching other matches now here instead.
’Seems she’d already done well in her matches,’ he thought, clocking her expression. Composed, settled, the specific energy of someone who had already handled their business and was here purely to watch his.
Dex was further along. Arms crossed. Chin up.
No Maren on the rail.
’Probably still at the infirmary,’ he thought. ’A-rank healer or not, that kind of output damage takes time to repair properly.’
He filed that away and looked at his opponent.
Mercer Dean was already on the floor. Medium height. Lean but not slight. The build of someone who ran hot in every sense. He had his hands loose at his sides and his eyes on Zane with an expression that sat somewhere between curiosity and confidence.
The commentator’s voice lifted over the arena.
"Round Two — 007, Calloway Zane versus 015, Mercer Dean. Now Calloway you already know. A Sigilless first year, who won Round One against a B-rank Flashstep sigil in what this commentator is still processing." A pause. "Mercer Dean — With a C-rank, Ember Sigil. Elemental fire type. Has known skills like contact ignition plus directed heat projection at range." Another pause. "This is a very different matchup from Round One ladies and gentlemen. Let’s see if Calloway’s Round One performance was the beginning of something or the whole story."
Zane looked at Mercer Dean across the floor.
’Fire type,’ he thought. ’Contact ignition means touching me is a problem. Directed projection means he doesn’t have to.’
’If his output catches me at close range I’m cooked. Literally.’
『 Ember Sigil — C-rank. Contact ignition activates on skin contact. Directed projection range estimated 4-6 meters at full C-rank output. Your aura range is 3.4 meters. Approach will bring you inside projection range before acquisition range is reached. Adapt accordingly. 』
’So closing distance is the problem,’ Zane thought. ’Same as always. Different reason this time.’
’And what does any of this have to do with acquisition,’ he thought. ’I can’t absorb a fire type Sigil with both slots full anyway. This fight is purely about survival and output. No system benefit. Just me and whatever I’ve built.’
『 Correct. No acquisition opportunity this match. Both slots are occupied. Focus on the fight. 』
’Thanks for the reminder,’ Zane thought. ’Very necessary system .’
『 You’re welcome. 』
The referee raised his hand.
Dropped it.
Mercer activated immediately.
Not contact ignition.A huge projection. A directed heat burst that covered the center line of the arena floor in a tight concentrated stream aimed directly at Zane’s chest.
Zane cut left.
The heat passed close enough that he felt it on his right arm. Not contact. Just proximity. Warm enough to register even through the training gear.
’Range is real,’ he thought. ’Four meters minimum on that projection.’
He activated Overdrive at 60%.
The surge hit instantly. Legs lighter, hands faster, that invisible electricity running just beneath the skin dialing everything up a frequency above normal. ’Better end this quickly when I’m chanced,’ he thought. ’Fire type at close range is not somewhere I want to spend more time than necessary.’
He cut the arc wide. Not toward Mercer, around the edge of the projection field’s natural forward facing angle. The same geometry he’d been drilling since the night Dex showed him the highlight reel.
Mercer redirected.
Faster than Reeves had redirected Flashstep. Elemental output didn’t have the half second mechanical delay of a displacement Sigil. It just moved. The projection tracked Zane’s arc and he had to reverse direction mid-step to avoid the leading edge.
The heat caught his left shoulder.
Not full contact ignition. A glancing proximity burn through the training gear. He felt it. But kept moving.
’He’s faster on the redirect than I planned for,’ Zane thought. ’The arc needs to be tighter. Less predictable at closer range.’
He reset. Ran a tighter arc. Changed the approach angle completely.
"Calloway is moving differently from Round One," the commentator said. "More variation in the approach vectors. He’s not running a straight pattern. He’s mixing it up with every rep. Mercer is tracking but there’s a half beat delay when the angle changes sharply, his spreading fire in the right direction."
There. The delay.
Not half a second. Less. But real.
Zane changed angle mid-arc. Sharper than anything he’d used against Reeves and the projection missed the redirect by a fraction.
He closed the remaining distance in the Overdrive window.
Palm contact. Impact Breaker at 65% output.
The shockwave hit Mercer square in the chest.
Mercer went back three steps. Didn’t go down. Caught himself. Looked at Zane with the expression of someone who had just recalibrated their entire assessment of the match in real time.
Zane looked at his own palm.
"What the..." he muttered. "Even at 65%. What is this suit made of."
’I hit him at 65% Impact Breaker inside a full Overdrive window,’ he thought. ’And he’s still standing.’
"Contact — and Mercer takes the hit. He’s still standing but that registered. Calloway lands on a fire type without getting burned. How is he closing that distance?"
Mercer activated contact ignition this time.
Both hands lit. Not flame exactly. Heat concentrated into his palms intense enough to make the air shimmer around them. He came forward instead of projecting. Trying to force close range on his terms.
Zane read it.
Stepped back. Drew Mercer forward. Let him commit to the close range approach.
Then reversed.
Mercer’s ignited palm passed an inch from his face as he ducked under it.
Palm contact from below. Impact Breaker at 65%.
Mercer’s chin. Clean.
He went down.
The arena was quiet for three seconds.
Then the commentator.
"And Mercer Dean is down. Referee calling it." A pause. "Ladies and gentlemen — Zane Calloway wins Round Two. Back to back. The Sigilless first year is through to Round Three and I think we need to retire the word fluke from this conversation entirely."
The rail reacted.
Zane stood on the floor and looked at his palm.
65% Impact Breaker. 60% Overdrive. A proximity burn on his left shoulder that was going to be uncomfortable tomorrow.
He looked at the rail.
Sera both hands on the rail. Dex pointing at him with the energy of someone who had bet on the right outcome and wanted acknowledgment for it.
He looked away from the rail.
’Round Three,’ he thought.
’Sorry Mercer. Had to go full because you weren’t going down.’
’I wonder if Nova Steele made the call or she didn’t.’
’Either way, Ryan Castellan is somewhere in this building.’
’And the file is still open.’
He walked off the floor.
