Chapter 38| Maren vs Ryan
Chapter 38: Chapter 38| Maren vs Ryan
Arena One had a different energy now.
Not the polite anticipation of the earlier matches. Something sharper. More present. The observation rail packed tighter than it had been all day. Students who’d already had their matches done pressing forward, second and third years who’d been casually watching now leaning on the rail with actual attention.
Zane found a spot on the center rail. Sera slid in beside him. Whatever she’d been about to say in the corridor was still sitting between them unaddressed. She’d deal with it after. Right now both their eyes were on the arena floor.
Maren was already down there.
Fitted training gear. Hair tied back. Expression doing the quiet calculation that Zane had been watching every morning for six weeks at 6:20 AM.
Ryan walked out from the opposite entrance and the energy in the rail shifted again. The specific atmospheric change of a room that had clocked a name and was already running its own assessment.
The commentator’s voice lifted over everything.
"Alright ladies and gentlemen — This is the one. 034 — Maren, Cass. C-rank Overdrive. From my records she recently had three weeks of solo morning training and a combat style she built from scratch. Versus 019 — Castellan, Ryan. B-rank Pressure Wave. Arguably the most socially visible student in this intake year." A pause. "On paper this is straightforward. On paper. Let’s see what actually happens."
They faced each other across the floor.
Ryan looked at Maren the way he looked at most things. With the composed assessment of someone who had already decided the outcome and was just waiting for the floor to confirm it.
Maren looked at Ryan the way she looked at a problem she hadn’t categorised yet.
The referee dropped his hand.
Ryan activated immediately.
The Pressure Wave field expanded across his half of the arena floor. Wide, covering the same B-rank output Zane had clocked from the rail during the earlier match. The displacement radius pushed outward and Maren had to step back to avoid the leading edge.
"Ryan activates first the commentator said— Pressure Wave, wide field coverage. Maren is being pushed back before she even closes distance."
Maren held the edge of the field. Watched it. Mapped it.
Then activated Overdrive and moved.
Not straight. Angled. The same arc approach Zane had been drilling into his own movement for two weeks. She’d developed it first, it was hers, and watching it from the rail hit him somewhere specific.
She got inside the field’s leading edge before Ryan could redirect coverage.
She made contact. A heavy palm strike to his shoulder at controlled Overdrive output.
Ryan stepped back one step.
Looked at her.
"Maren gets inside — clean contact. Ryan took that and is not happy about the approach angle. He’s adjusting his field geometry already."
Ryan adjusted.
The field tightened — less radius, more concentration. Harder to arc around. He started moving instead of standing, cutting off the angles Maren was using.
She adapted.
Three more exchanges. Each one tighter than the last. Ryan’s field pushing her back, Maren finding new angles, neither of them landing anything decisive.
The crowd on the rail leaned forward collectively.
"This is not what anyone expected," the commentator said. "Maren is giving a B-rank student genuine problems with movement and positioning. The rank gap is not showing the way it should."
Then Maren found the gap.
Ryan overextended his field to the right to cut off an arc. Left side opened for half a second.
She was already moving into it.
Overdrive at full chain output. Inside his guard before he could close the left side.
Her fist caught him clean across the cheek.
The arena went very quiet for exactly one second.
Ryan’s head turned with the impact. He stood still.
Then he looked at her.
Something shifted in his expression. Not anger exactly. Something colder than anger. More deliberate.
He clicked.
"Ryan takes a hit to the face and — I don’t like the look of that," the commentator said. "Something just changed in Castellan’s body language. Maren, I suggest you be careful."
Ryan stopped playing coverage games.
The Pressure Wave output changed entirely. No longer wide field, now concentrated directional bursts aimed specifically at Maren’s position. Faster redirect between activations. Less radius, more force per burst.
The first one caught her across the ribs.
She skidded back three meters.
Second burst before she recovered. Caught her shoulder. She hit the floor on one knee.
"Ryan is going over the top here," the commentator said, voice losing its usual rhythm. "Someone needs to calm Castellan down. This is beyond what the match requires."
Maren got up.
That was the thing about Maren. She got up.
She activated Overdrive and pushed back into him. Not retreating, not buying time, actually pushing back against a B-rank output that was running significantly hotter than it had been thirty seconds ago.
She got inside once more.
Ryan was ready for it this time.
He let her come. Then released a concentrated burst at point blank the moment she entered close range. Not wide coverage, a single focused output directed straight at her chest at what looked like full B-rank capacity.
The impact lifted her off the composite floor.
She landed hard on her back.
Didn’t get up immediately.
The arena was completely silent.
"I — referee—" the commentator said, the performance completely gone from his voice. "Referee, that needs to be called. That was excessive output for a rank trial. Someone get the medical team."
The referee was already moving.
But Maren was trying to get up.
She made it to one elbow. Then the elbow gave out. Blood on the composite floor from somewhere. Her lip, her nose, it didn’t matter, it was there and the sight of it hit the rail like a physical thing.
She went down properly.
Still.
The medical team was on the floor in under thirty seconds. The A-rank healer from the academy medical unit moving fast, Sigil already active, dropping to her knees beside Maren without ceremony.
Two staff members followed with a stretcher.
Ryan stood on his side of the floor watching. His expression had recalibrated back to being composed. Like a switch had been thrown and then thrown back.
The commentator didn’t say anything for a long moment.
Then — "Castellan advances. By referee stoppage." A pause. "I’ll leave the commentary there."
Zane’s hands were on the rail.
Both of them. Gripping it.
He watched Maren being lifted onto the stretcher. Watched the A-rank healer’s Sigil running across her. Hands moving with practiced efficiency, the activation visible as a faint shimmer across Maren’s body where the repair work was already beginning.
’Just when I thought you weren’t bad enough,’ he thought.
His jaw was tight. His knuckles were white on the rail.
Sera was beside him. She’d gone very still.
The stretcher moved toward the corridor exit. The A-rank healer walking alongside it, Sigil still active, not stopping.
Zane watched until they were through the door.
Then looked at Ryan still standing on the arena floor.
’You will pay for that,’ he thought.
Not now. Not today. ’Or what if it could be today’ Zane thought.
