Chapter 36: Chapter 36| 007 vs 031
It was 2:08 PM Zane checked the time from his communicator.
He stood in the Arena Two corridor alone.
The noise from Arena One filtered through the walls. Muffled but present, the sound of matches still running, the commentator’s voice rising and falling with each exchange. The corridor was empty except for him. Everyone else was either on the rails or waiting for their own bracket to be called.
He looked at the display above the Arena Two entrance.
007 — CALLOWAY, ZANE vs 031 —
The name finished loading.
He stared at it for three full seconds.
’So that’s who N is,’ he thought.
He filed it away. No time for anything else right now. He’d process it properly after.
The arena doors opened.
The observation rail was full.
He clocked every face as he walked onto the floor. Sera near the center with an actual fitted gear even though he couldn’t still decipher her figure within the outfit, both hands gripping the rail with the specific tension of someone trying to look calm and not quite managing it. Dex beside her, arms crossed, chin up, the mission-ready energy still sitting in his posture from yesterday. Kael one spot further, completely still, watching the floor with the focused attention he brought to anything worth paying attention to.
Maren was further along the rail.
She wasn’t watching the floor generally. She was watching him specifically. Not the calculating stillness that was her default. Not the recalibrating softness from the past few days. Something else. Something that had been building since the training grounds incident and the two things she’d filed and hadn’t addressed yet.
He held it for exactly one second then looked away.
His opponent was already on the floor.
Reeves Dash, Lean. Compact. The build of someone whose Sigil rewarded fast twitch reaction over raw output. He stood at the center of his half of the arena with his arms loose at his sides and his eyes on Zane with the composed assessment of someone who had already done his math and liked the numbers he’d come up with.
The commentator’s voice lifted over the arena.
"And our next match — 007, Calloway Zane versus 031, Reeves Dash. Now this one is interesting ladies and gentlemen. Calloway is our Sigilless first year — son of the legendary S-rank hero Sovereign. And Reeves is carrying a B-rank Flashstep Sigil. Speed based. Rapid burst teleportation. Short range, high frequency, and genuinely difficult to read if you don’t know what you’re looking for." A pause. "This matchup on paper looks very one sided. Let’s see what the prodigy’s son actually has."
The referee raised his hand.
Dropped it.
Reeves disappeared.
Not ran. Disappeared. One instant he was across the floor and the next he was beside Zane’s left shoulder driving an elbow hard into his ribs.
Zane took it. Exhaled sharply. Stepped right. Tried to create distance.
Reeves disappeared again.
Reappeared behind him. Caught him across the back of the neck with a short sharp strike that had real weight behind it.
Zane stumbled forward two steps. Caught himself. Kept standing.
’Fast,’ he thought. ’His burst range is short, maybe three meters maximum. But the frequency is high. He’s not crossing the arena. He’s cycling within close range. In and out before I can track the reappear point on base reaction time.’
He tried to read the pattern.
Left. Zane sidestepped right to meet it.
Reeves was already on his left.
Strike to the jaw. Zane’s head snapped sideways. He tasted copper. Caught himself on one foot and stayed upright.
"This is not looking good for our prodigy’s son," the commentator said, voice carrying the specific energy of someone watching something go predictably wrong. "Reeves is everywhere and Calloway can’t find the pattern. No Sigil. No speed enhancement. What exactly is he going to do here?"
Zane spat once onto the composite floor.
He Looked at the rail.
Maren was staring at him. Not with calculation. Not with softness. Just hard and focused and present in a way that covered the distance between the rail and the arena floor like it wasn’t there.
He looked at her for exactly one second.
’Fuck it,’ he thought.
He activated Overdrive at 60%.
The invisible surge ran through his muscles instantly. Legs lighter, hands faster, everything dialing up to a frequency slightly above normal like electricity moving just beneath the skin. Not painful. Just present and sharp.
Reeves disappeared.
Zane felt the air displacement half a beat before the reappear point registered. The slight pressure shift that Overdrive’s enhanced reaction time caught just inside the threshold of normal human perception. A fraction of a second. Enough.
There.
Left shoulder. Incoming.
He turned into it instead of away from it. Stepped into the reappear point before Reeves could reset and drove his palm forward.
Impact Breaker at 29% output. Contained. Controlled.
Contact on the stomach.
The shockwave rolled through Reeves at the contact point and he zapped backward like something had physically reversed his momentum. Three meters across the floor before he caught himself. Dropped to one knee. Hand on his stomach.
The arena went completely silent.
Not the polite quiet between exchanges.
Complete silence. The specific silence of a room that had seen something and hadn’t processed it yet.
The commentator was quiet for four full seconds.
"Did I just...Did anyone else see that?" Another pause. "Something clearly happened. Calloway made contact with Reeves. I genuinely don’t know what just occurred. But our Sigilless first year just put a B-rank on one knee with a single palm strike."
Reeves looked up from the floor.
Looked at Zane.
"I thought you were Sigilless," he said.
Zane held his gaze.
"Not bad to show off once in a while," Zane replied.
Reeves stared at him. Then stood up slowly.
"That was a fluke," Reeves said.
He disappeared.
The burst pattern changed. No longer single direction. Now a three point rotation. Left. Right. Behind. Randomised sequence designed to break whatever pattern recognition Zane had built in the first exchange.
Zane tracked the air displacement.
Overdrive still running. Enhanced reaction time catching the pressure shift half a beat ahead of each reappear point.
Left. Right. Behind.
Left. Behind. Right.
There.
Behind. Incoming fast.
Zane turned. Stepped into the reappear point. Palm came up.
Impact Breaker at 30% output.
Contact on the jaw.
Clean.
Reeves didn’t drop to one knee this time.
He went down completely. Hit the composite floor and stayed there. The referee was moving before the echo of the impact finished crossing the arena.
The arena held its silence for exactly five seconds.
Then the commentator’s voice came back.
"And... done. Reeves is down. The referee is calling it." A pause that had nothing performative in it. "I.. ladies and gentlemen, I don’t know what to tell you. Unforeseen circumstances doesn’t cover what just happened on this floor. I’m not sure if that was a fluke. I’m genuinely not sure what that was. But we have a winner — Zane Calloway."
The observation rail erupted.
Zane stood in the middle of the arena floor.
Looked at his palm.
Then at the rail.
Sera’s hand was over her mouth. Dex had both fists on the rail leaning forward. Kael was completely still in the way he went still when something had just permanently closed a file he’d been keeping open.
Maren was looking at him with an expression he didn’t have a name for yet. Hadn’t had a name for it since the training grounds. Still didn’t.
He looked back at the floor.
’And there goes my cover,’ he thought.
The system surfaced quietly.
『 System Note: Cover is compromised. Proceed accordingly. 』
’Thanks,’ he thought. ’Very helpful as always.’
『 You’re welcome. 』
