Chapter 16 -16| Quiet Threats
Chapter 16: Chapter16| Quiet Threats
The afternoon session ended at 3:45 PM.
Students filtered out in the usual clusters. Section groups reforming, conversations picking up mid-sentence from wherever they’d been paused before class, the general movement of forty people who had somewhere else to be.
Zane was packing his notebook when he became aware of someone stopping beside his row.
He looked up.
Ryan Castellan. Alone. No circle behind him for once . They’d already filed out ahead of him which meant this stop was deliberate and unwitnessed.
Zane waited.
"Good answer earlier," Ryan said.
Not aggressive. Not loaded. Just said it the way you’d acknowledge a decent play in a game you were both taking seriously.
Zane looked at him.
"Thanks," he said carefully.
Ryan nodded once. "I’ll be honest with you. I misjudged the approach." He said it with the easy confidence of someone who could admit a tactical error without it costing him anything because the admission itself was part of the next move. "Different approach going forward."
"What approach is that," Zane said.
Ryan smiled. Not hostile. Almost warm. "Just watching."
He walked out.
Zane stood there for a moment looking at the empty doorway.
’That’s worse,’ he thought.
『 Confirmed. Overt social campaigns require the target to remain passive. A predator that goes quiet isn’t retreating. It’s repositioning. 』
’He’s going to watch me until he finds something,’ Zane thought. ’Something he can use that doesn’t bounce back the way the classroom move did.’
『 Correct. Recommend maintaining current behaviour pattern. Deviation under observation creates exploitable inconsistency. 』
’So just keep doing what I’m doing,’ Zane thought.
『 Precisely. You are harder to attack when you are moving than when you are still. Keep moving. 』
Zane picked up his bag and walked out.
The corridor outside the session room split into two directions . left toward the main building, right toward the practical complex and the east courtyard.
Zane went right.
He needed air more than he needed to be inside right now. The Ryan interaction had left something in his chest that wasn’t quite tension but wasn’t nothing either. The specific discomfort of a threat that had just changed shape without going away.
He pushed through the exterior door at the end of the corridor and stepped out into the late afternoon.
The east courtyard was quieter at this hour. Most students headed inward after sessions, not outward. The air had the specific quality of late afternoon light on a campus. Golden, slightly tired, the day winding down without having fully committed to ending yet.
He was three steps across the courtyard when he saw her.
Nyx Hale.
’If I recall correctly,’ he thought, ’she was the girl from the entrance ceremony. The one who bent the railing without touching it and walked off the stage like she’d done it a hundred times before.’
Sitting on the low wall at the courtyard’s edge. Alone. No book, no communicator . Just sitting with her arms crossed and her eyes on the middle distance like she was working something out and the courtyard was as good a place as any to do it.
She looked up when he came through the door.
They looked at each other across fifteen meters of the courtyard.
Neither of them moved for a second.
Zane considered turning left and taking the longer route back. Decided against it. Changing direction now would read as avoidance and he wasn’t in the business of giving people things to read.
He walked straight across.
He was going to pass four meters to her left. Close enough to acknowledge. Far enough to not make it a thing.
He was two meters past her when she spoke.
"Calloway."
He stopped.
Turned around.
Nyx was still sitting on the wall. Still had her arms crossed. Her expression was the same one she’d had since registration . unreadable, calculating, processing something she hadn’t finished categorising yet.
"You handled Ryan well," she said.
Zane looked at her. "You were in that session?"
"Back row," she replied. "You didn’t notice."
’No,’ he thought. ’I didn’t.’
That was worth noting. He’d clocked most of the room when he walked in. He’d missed her entirely.
"He’ll adjust," Zane said.
"He already has," Nyx said. "I saw him stop you in the corridor after." Her eyes moved over him briefly. "You’re not worried."
"Should I be?"
She considered that for a moment with the stillness that was her default . Controlled, deliberate, giving nothing away until she’d decided what she wanted to give.
"He’s B-rank," she said. "His Pressure Wave Sigil has a four meter radius at full output. In a rank trial that’s a problem for most people in this intake year."
"Most people," Zane said. "And you’re quite informed."
"I make it my business to be," Nyx said without missing a beat. "Especially about people who might end up across from me in a rank trial."
Zane looked at her.
’So she’s already considered the possibility we could be matched,’ he thought. ’She’s not just watching the room. She’s already running scenarios.’
"And what did being informed tell you?" Zane asked.
"Enough to know you’re not what the file says," she replied simply.
Zane looked at her for a long moment.
’She’s not making conversation,’ he thought. ’She’s gathering data. Same thing she was doing at registration. Same thing she’s been doing every time I’ve been in her peripheral vision since day one.’
"What are you actually asking me," Zane said.
Something shifted in her expression. Not much. Just enough to confirm he’d said the right thing.
"Nothing yet," she said.
She uncrossed her arms and stood up from the wall in one clean movement. Picked up her bag from the ground beside her.
"Your Sigil theory answer was accurate by the way," she said, already moving. "Not just clever. Actually accurate."
She walked past him toward the main building without looking back.
Zane stood in the courtyard and watched her go.
’What was that,’ he thought.
『 PROMINENT TARGET DETECTED: NYX HALE 』
『 Sigil: KINETIC FORCE — B-RANK 』
『 Status: Bound Target Candidate 』
『 System Note: First genuine verbal exchange. She initiated. She also complimented your intellect twice without framing either as a compliment. She is more aware of you than her behaviour has suggested. 』
’I noticed,’ Zane thought.
’And system . What’s with you flagging every girl I have an exchange with as a Bound Target candidate?’
『 I flag females you have genuine exchanges with because any of them could become a Bound Target. The system casts a wide net. You narrow it. 』
’So you’re just flagging everyone and leaving the judgment to me,’ Zane thought.
『 Correct. I identify candidates. You determine viability. Think of it as a shortlist not a commitment. 』
’A shortlist,’ Zane thought. ’You flagged the cafeteria lady yesterday.’
『 She handed you food with genuine warmth. The system responded accordingly. 』
’She was doing her job,’ Zane thought.
『 The system does not make that distinction. 』
Zane stared at nothing for a moment.
’Unbelievable,’ he thought.
『 Moving on. 』
『 Her Kinetic Sigil flickered twice during the exchange. Drain effect. She did not mention it. 』
’She’s still trying to figure out what’s causing it,’ Zane thought.
『 Correct. She is methodical. She will keep investigating. 』
’I know,’ Zane thought.
The courtyard was quiet around him. Late afternoon light running gold across the composite ground. Two weeks until rank trials. Ryan watching from a distance. Nyx gathering data she hadn’t named yet.
He stood there for one more second.
Then picked up his bag and walked back toward the main building.
’One thing at a time,’ he thought.
The system said nothing.
For once it didn’t need to.
