Chapter 220 - 177: Xue Fusheng Knelt Before Chu Bamboo

Third District Police Chief Bureau.

Inside the Special Operations Captain’s office.

Li Kang was sweating profusely as he stood ramrod straight. He was completely at a loss for what to do.

Lu Muxue and Madam Xue were on the other side of the desk...

A phone sat on the desk, from which Lu Jin’s cold and authoritative voice emanated. "...This can be considered an incident that occurred in your Third District. Of course, the most important thing is... this time, it was ultimately one of your people who resolved the situation!"

He paused briefly before continuing, "To prevent things from getting too complicated, and to keep... certain sensitive details from getting out, I’m entrusting the investigation to you! But you must get to the bottom of this. I don’t care who’s behind it! Even if the mastermind is a god in heaven, you will find them at any cost!"

"I understand." Li Kang nodded repeatedly. He knew exactly what Lu Jin had so carefully left unsaid. After learning the details, he was utterly shocked. It was safe to say Madam Xue and her daughter had only survived because Chu Bamboo single-handedly turned the tide.

However, the rescue had been carried out using a special-ops drone from headquarters... Forget him—even headquarters had no idea the drone could be used in such a way!

The matter was far too sensitive.

If the case was handled here in the Third District, they could use the Spring and Autumn Annals Style to relatively easily conceal any information that might be unfavorable to Chu Bamboo. But if the First District were to conduct a cross-jurisdictional investigation, things would get very complicated.

Of course, on the other hand, this was also Lu Jin giving Li Kang a chance to make up for his failings. After all, the incident had occurred on the border between the Second and Third Districts...

The wife and daughter of Governor Lu had nearly been killed. The incident was massive, far too massive. Even though it currently seemed unrelated to the Police Chief Bureaus of the Second and Third Districts, they would inevitably be held accountable later!

If Li Kang could take the lead on this case and solve it, he could ensure that not only he, but the entire Third District Police Chief Bureau, would safely weather the impending storm.

At the thought that he would have faced severe criticism in the next internal briefing if not for Chu Bamboo, Li Kang couldn’t help but glare viciously at the assailant. She was tied up securely off to the side, her wounds crudely wrapped in white cloths to prevent her from bleeding out and dying by accident.

The assailant kept her eyes downcast, her face devoid of expression. She looked as though she was questioning her life choices, or perhaps she was simply being defiant and uncooperative.

Ning Linglong stood quietly beside the assailant, keeping watch.

The door opened and Wall Announcements rushed in, his face fraught with anxiety. "Uh, Captain, we ran a search on the assailant’s background... and we found..."

"What?" Li Kang immediately shot a look at Wall Announcements. When the man fell silent, Li Kang’s brow furrowed. But before he could press him, Wall Announcements seemed to steel himself and said with a wry smile, "The thing is, we can’t find any record of who she is... Maybe we should just interrogate her first!"

"Not even with the Ancient Relics?" Li Kang asked, stunned.

Using Ancient Relics for investigations was normally a foolproof method. It was just that due to their special nature, their use couldn’t be requested for run-of-the-mill cases. But this incident was of major significance, so an exception was naturally made.

The Police Chief Bureau’s Ancient Relic contained the data of nearly every resident in Jinghai City. To come up with nothing under these circumstances...

"Could it be that this assailant is from out of town?" Madam Xue mused.

"Actually... there is one other possibility..." Wall Announcements trailed off.

Madam Xue prompted, "...Yes?"

"The situation over in the shantytown redevelopment zones is unique, so the residents’ data hasn’t been entered into the Ancient Relic yet. However," Li Kang quickly interjected, trying to smooth things over, "I’m more inclined to believe the assailant is actually..."

"Enough. It’s perfectly normal that you can’t find any information on this assailant. It would be a miracle if you could."

Hearing the familiar voice, Li Kang’s spirits lifted. He looked up to see Chu Bamboo striding into the office. Before he could ask anything, Lu Muxue rushed over to him. "Ah- Ah Zhu... Um."

Lu Muxue opened her mouth to speak. She had thought of so many things to say to thank him on the way over, but now, standing in front of Chu Bamboo, her mind went completely blank. All she could do was stammer.

’...Such a disappointment!’

The corner of Madam Xue’s eye twitched almost imperceptibly. She stepped forward and said warmly, "Mr. Chu, it seems our family owes you yet another great debt."

"Indeed," Lu Jin’s voice cut in from the still-open line on the phone. "Although... there are certainly many suspicious aspects to this! I trust you, however."

This was without even considering the possibility Wall Announcements had alluded to—that the assailant came from the shantytown redevelopment zone.

The most obvious question was, how did Chu Bamboo know there was trouble? Lu Jin had spoken with his wife and knew that even she hadn’t realized an assailant was hiding in her car until just moments before the rescue.

Working backward from the timing of Chu Bamboo’s response, he must have known about it far in advance and made his own arrangements. By any normal logic, this could mean Chu Bamboo himself was the mastermind behind the whole affair... Yet, Lu Jin chose to trust him.

Mainly, he didn’t believe Chu Bamboo had any reason to do such a thing. Besides, the assailant hadn’t been killed; she’d even been captured. If Chu Bamboo were truly responsible, he should have killed her to tie up loose ends.
