The next morning, Kai returned to the Astral Church, but this time, Gabriel didn’t lead them through the public halls. She took them in through a private entrance, with Sera walking beside Kai and Lily trailing behind them carrying three tablets, two notebooks, and a small relic scanner.

Kai glanced at the pile in her arms. "Did you really need all of that?"

Lily looked offended. "Of course."

"We’re going to an archive."

"Exactly."

Sera smiled. "She packed like we’re going to war."

"We’re exploring ancient records that may be older than recorded history," Lily said. "So yes."

Kai laughed quietly, and Gabriel looked back at them. "Try not to break anything."

"I won’t," Lily said immediately.

Sera raised an eyebrow. "That’s not very convincing."

"I’ve learned from my mistakes."

Kai looked at her. "Have you?"

Lily ignored him.

The outer halls were already busy with priests, researchers carrying stacks of documents, and Hunters coming and going, but the further in they went, the quieter it became. Eventually, the polished floors gave way to stone, and ancient walls rose around them. Kai noticed the air growing colder.

"This part of the Church..." he began.

"Is older," Gabriel said.

"How old?"

"We don’t know. It was here before the Church."

Lily stopped walking and stared at the walls, and Kai looked around. "You built the Church on top of ancient ruins."

"Much of Nexus is like that," Gabriel said as she continued on. "It’s one of the reasons the Church keeps its archives."

They reached a massive stone door with no electronic locks or security systems, only ancient symbols carved across its surface. Gabriel placed her hand against it, and the symbols lit up as the door swung open, letting cold air spill into the hallway.

Beyond it was an enormous underground archive. Shelves stretched away into the darkness, holding thousands of ancient records, some carved in stone, others preserved on strange metal plates, and a few sealed inside glass-like relics.

Lily went completely still. "Oh."

Sera laughed. "There it is."

"What?"

"That face."

Lily didn’t answer. She was too busy staring.

"How many records are down here?" Kai asked.

"More than we’ve ever managed to count," Gabriel said, "and most of them are incomplete."

Lily started forward, and Gabriel caught the back of her coat. "Not yet."

Lily looked back. "Why?"

"Because there’s something you need to see first."

Lily reluctantly followed as Gabriel led them deeper into the archive, to a circular room with a massive table at its center. It wasn’t stone. It was a transparent surface with hundreds of symbols glowing faintly beneath it.

Gabriel touched the center, and light spread across the table until a map formed. It showed the entire continent, its mountains, rivers, cities, Hunter territories, and ancient ruins.

Then seven points of light appeared, and Kai’s expression changed.

Lily stepped closer. "Are those the ruins you told us about?"

"Yes," Gabriel said. One point near the edge of the continent flashed. "That’s Aegis."

"And the others?" Lily pointed from one light to the next.

"We know where they are," Gabriel said, "but almost nothing about what they are."

Sera frowned. "When did the others activate?"

Gabriel touched the map again, and dates, times, and activation records appeared beside each light.

Kai studied them. "They all activated around the same time."

Lily leaned closer. "How close?"

Gabriel enlarged the timestamps. Between the first activation and the last, there were only a few minutes.

Lily’s expression slowly changed. "That isn’t possible. These ruins are hundreds of kilometers apart."

"Maybe they were connected," Kai said.

"Not like this." Lily shook her head as she studied the data. "These were built by different civilizations."

Gabriel’s expression grew serious. "And yet?"

Lily swallowed. "They activated almost at the same moment."

Sera looked at the map. "Could Aegis have set them off?"

"No," Lily said. "Aegis was already active before we got there."

"Then what caused it?" Kai asked.

"We don’t know," Gabriel said.

She widened the view until all seven points were visible at once. There was Aegis, one ruin in the north, another near the eastern mountains, one deep in the western forest, one along an old coastline, and another in the far south. The seventh was only partly visible, its exact location blurred on the map.

Kai stared at the pattern, and something about it bothered him. He had seen something like this before, not in Aegis, but in the vision, in the glimpses of ancient cities and the systems that connected them. The memory was too fragmented to hold onto.

He stepped closer. "Zoom out until they’re all on the same view."

Gabriel did, and the map shifted. Lily stared, Sera leaned in, and Kai said nothing, because the seven ruins formed a shape, a massive geometric pattern stretched across the continent.

Lily’s mouth fell open. "They aren’t randomly placed."

"They form a shape," Sera said.

"Exactly."

Gabriel pulled the map back further, and the shape grew clearer. There were seven points, linked by seven almost perfectly straight lines.

"Wait," Kai said, pointing at the center of it. "What’s there?"

Gabriel looked, and her expression changed. "Central Nexus."

Sera blinked. "The city?"

"The pattern surrounds Nexus," Gabriel said.

"No," Lily said, moving around the table and grabbing one of her tablets. "That’s not all. Give me the coordinates."

Gabriel transferred them, and Lily ran the numbers, comparing her results with the map until her eyes went wide. "The distances are nearly identical. Close enough that I don’t think it’s natural." She traced the lines with her finger. "The ruins aren’t just surrounding Nexus. They’re pointing toward it."

Sera’s expression hardened. "So Nexus is the target?"

"I don’t know," Lily said.

Kai stared at the city at the center of the map. Millions of people lived there, going about their lives above ancient foundations, and suddenly everything he had seen since arriving felt different. Nexus wasn’t just an old city. It had been built on top of something far older.

Gabriel stepped back from the table. "This can’t be right."

Kai looked at her. "You’ve studied these ruins for years, and you never noticed this?"

"We never knew all seven locations at once," Gabriel said. "We thought they were separate ruins."

"Maybe that’s what someone wanted you to think," Lily said quietly.

Neither Sera nor Gabriel said anything for several seconds.

"Wanted?" Sera finally asked.

Lily nodded. "If these structures were built to work together, then keeping them separate may have been intentional."

Kai’s eyes narrowed. "You mean someone hid them."

"Or hid them from us."

Gabriel looked uncomfortable. "Why?"

Lily looked at the center of the map. "I don’t know."

Kai felt something tighten inside him. The seven ruins, the Church’s ancient foundations, Aegis, the Candidate, and the System all seemed to be pointing toward the same place.

The map flickered, and one of the seven points went dark.

Everyone froze.

"What happened?" Sera asked.

Gabriel checked the controls. "I don’t know."

The point came back, and then another went dark, and then another.

Lily’s eyes widened. "They’re responding."

"To what?" Kai asked.

Nobody answered. All seven points began to pulse one after another, circling the continent, until thin lines of energy connected each ruin to the next. The pattern grew brighter, and the lines converged on the center of the map.

Nexus was glowing. It wasn’t the city itself lighting up, but something beneath it, something enormous buried deep below the streets.

Sera stepped closer. "What is that?"

Gabriel stared at it. "I don’t know."

"There’s something underneath the city," Lily whispered.

Kai looked at her. "How deep?"

Lily checked her readings, and her confusion only grew. "Too deep. I can’t get an exact reading."

Kai turned to Gabriel. "Can the Church reach it?"

Gabriel slowly shook her head. "We’ve never detected anything like this."

"Then why is the map showing it now?"

Gabriel didn’t have an answer. The seven points pulsed again, and the room shook.

BOOM.

Dust drifted down from the ceiling, and Sera reached for her sword. "What was that?"

A second tremor hit, stronger than the first.

"The ruins," Lily said, staring at the map. "They’re activating again."

The seven points blazed brighter, and a circle appeared beneath the center of Nexus, larger than the entire central district. Then a line of ancient writing appeared above it.

Gabriel read it, and her face went pale.

"What does it say?" Sera asked.

Gabriel didn’t answer.

"Gabriel," Kai said.

She swallowed. "It says, ’The network is awake.’"

Nobody moved.

Kai stared at the map, and his thoughts raced. Aegis hadn’t activated only because they had entered it. Something had already started long before, and they had simply been the first to find it. Seven ancient structures, one center, and one network, with Nexus sitting directly in the middle of it.

He thought of the final message beneath Aegis, and he looked at the glowing city at the center of the map. Now he understood.

Aegis wasn’t the thing waking up.

"It was the first," Kai said.
