My CEO Husband Says I'm Irreplaceable
Chapter 246: It’s the Fairy Sister
Chapter 246: Chapter 246: It’s the Fairy Sister
Lost in memories of the past, a gentle smile graced Renee Rhodes’s lips.
"Oh, when I was pregnant with your older brother, I couldn’t keep anything down. Your father panicked and declared on the spot that we shouldn’t have the baby. It made me so furious I chased him around trying to beat him up every day."
"The morning sickness didn’t start to fade until I was five or six months along, but giving birth to him was surprisingly easy. Since I couldn’t eat much during the pregnancy, he was naturally on the smaller side, only about five or six pounds when he was born. Thankfully, he was in the right position and dropped into my pelvis early, so the delivery was exceptionally smooth. He was born before I knew it. During my postpartum confinement, Chadwick was such an easy baby. He never cried or fussed. Even at such a young age, he had a calm, mature disposition—a true angel baby."
As the words left her mouth, a pang of bitterness struck her heart. She hadn’t been able to raise Vesper by her side. She had been absent for every moment of her daughter’s growth, unable to witness all the little things, and her heart was filled with guilt and sorrow.
If Vesper had grown up under their care, the entire family would have surely doted on her, treating her like the apple of their eye.
Sensing her mother’s low spirits, Vesper Grayson offered a comforting smile.
"Mom, I was quite a handful when I was little. I was always being mischievous and causing trouble."
"It’s a good thing for a girl to be lively and spirited. Vesper, I’m the one who wronged you..." Renee Rhodes’s voice grew hoarse, thick with self-reproach.
"Mom, that’s all in the past. I’ve never blamed you. Your hands were tied back then," Vesper Grayson gently interrupted. "Thankfully, Dad always took great care of me, which is why we have the chance to be reunited today."
’She knew that Milton Grayson’s favoritism might have been an extension of his love for her mother, but the care he had shown her was undeniably real and could not be faked.’
The mother and daughter continued to talk as they slowly walked into the living room.
"Miss Grayson." Seeing her enter, Sebastian Kensington gave a slight nod in greeting.
Vesper Grayson nodded faintly, returning the gesture with a polite smile.
Miss Sterling had a kind face and a genuine smile.
"Miss Grayson, I truly never imagined we were related. You’ve suffered so much all these years, all alone out there. If I had known sooner that Lance had a daughter in Northolme, I would have insisted on bringing you back to the Sterling family to be cared for long ago."
"It is indeed a great surprise." Vesper Grayson’s gaze fell upon Miss Sterling and Silas Sterling. Seeing their rosy complexions and excellent spirits, she asked, "How have you two been feeling these past couple of days? Have you felt any discomfort?"
"Wonderful. My body hasn’t felt this light and spry in a long, long time. It feels like I’ve been given a new lease on life."
Silas Sterling chimed in.
"Me too. My cough is completely gone. I went to the hospital for a follow-up exam yesterday, and the doctor called it a miracle."
Just a short while ago, the two of them had been bedridden and beyond the help of medicine, practically at death’s door. Now, they had visibly regained their health.
Vesper Grayson smiled faintly. "You two are deeply blessed. Fortune favors the virtuous."
’If it weren’t for the formula for the Detoxification Pills in my grandmaster’s notebook, I would have been powerless to save them. I suppose everything is fated in the end.’
’If the Sterling and Whitman families weren’t related, they never would have come to Northolme to visit, and the truth of my birth would never have been revealed.’
Silas Sterling personally poured a cup of hot tea and pushed it in front of her, his expression earnest and imploring.
"Miss Grayson, I have a presumptuous request..."
"Please, feel free to ask." Vesper Grayson accepted the teacup, her expression calm and unruffled.
"It’s about my son, Julian. Your medical skills are extraordinary. I was wondering if you could possibly find a way to treat his condition?" The Sterling family had only a single heir for three generations, and Julian Sterling was the only one. As a father, he couldn’t bear to watch his son live his whole life in a muddled state.
In an instant, all eyes in the living room fell upon Vesper Grayson.
Renee Rhodes spoke gently, trying to persuade her.
"Vesper, if you have a way, please help Julian. After what happened with Sean Sterling, we can’t bear to entrust him to anyone else. The Sterling family can’t be left without an heir."
Vesper Grayson took a slow, deliberate sip of her tea, her tone steady and measured.
"I have consulted many medical texts. The cause of his condition is complex, and the treatment period will most likely be long. The human brain is an intricate and complex organ. I can’t yet determine the specific toxin in his body, nor how much irreversible damage it has caused to his nervous system. If you two are willing to trust me, I can certainly do my best to try."
’She didn’t make any guarantees, not wanting to raise their expectations too high only to leave them disappointed. Over the past few days, she had pored over her grandmaster’s medical notes and various ancient medical texts. Although she had a glimmer of an idea, her approach was not yet mature or comprehensive.’
Miss Sterling immediately grasped her hand, her eyes filled with trust.
"We do! We trust you one hundred percent! You cured me and Silas, so you can definitely save Julian! As long as you can help him get better, the Sterling family will pay any price, no questions asked."
Silas Sterling added with a solemn expression.
"Miss Grayson, we’re not asking for much. We don’t expect him to recover his former brilliance and talent. We just hope he can manage his daily life, live peacefully like a normal person, and not be bullied by others. We would be content with that."
’She could understand how they felt as parents. Now that she was pregnant herself, she understood that profound, protective love even more deeply.’
Before long, a servant brought Julian Sterling into the living room. He still had that same guileless, innocent expression; the turmoil caused by Sean Sterling hadn’t left the slightest shadow on him.
’Though she and Julian Sterling were only a few years apart in age, their generational standing meant she had to address him as her maternal uncle.’
"Julian, come here to Grandma," Miss Sterling beckoned to him.
Julian Sterling walked forward with a look of innocent confusion and affectionately hugged Miss Sterling’s arm.
"Grandma, I’m hungry. I want a pastry."
"You just ate not long ago. How can you be hungry again?" Despite her words, Miss Sterling still took a piece of osmanthus cake and handed it to him.
Julian Sterling took a bite, then held the other half up to Miss Sterling’s lips.
"It’s yummy. Grandma, you eat some too."
"Grandma’s not hungry. Grandma wants to introduce you to someone." Miss Sterling gestured toward Vesper Grayson. "This is your niece."
Julian Sterling stared at Vesper Grayson for a moment, then his eyes lit up and he broke into a pure, innocent smile.
"I know her! She’s the fairy sister!"
Miss Sterling chuckled. "That’s right, it is the fairy sister. She’s here especially to help you, so from now on you have to be a good boy and listen to her, alright?"
"The fairy sister is a good person. I’ll definitely listen." Julian Sterling lowered his head and focused on taking small bites of his pastry.
Vesper Grayson watched him, her heart filled with a mixture of emotions. He was once heaven’s favored son, dazzling and brilliant, only to be maliciously poisoned and left with the mind of a child.
’Based on her observations, the damage wasn’t especially severe. His speech was clear and his limbs were functioning normally. He didn’t show severe after-effects like facial drooping or an inability to perform basic self-care.’
"I’ll start by prescribing a medicinal broth for him to take regularly for a period of conditioning. After that, I will finalize a detailed treatment plan and proceed with the treatment gradually."
Chadwick Whitman, who had been sitting silently on a sofa to the side, fixed his heavy gaze on her, complex emotions swirling in his eyes.
’Only after coming to Northolme had he started to hear about her various deeds. This sister of his... her medical attainments were far more profound than he had imagined.’
After Vesper Grayson finished writing the prescription, she looked up and met Chadwick Whitman’s deep, somber eyes.
Chadwick Whitman’s lips curved. "When we first met in Veridia, I thought you looked very familiar. I never expected we were related by blood, actual siblings."
A slight smile touched Vesper Grayson’s lips. "We haven’t even done a DNA test. Aren’t you at all suspicious that my identity might be false?"
Chadwick Whitman smiled composedly. "If it were anyone else, I would certainly investigate thoroughly. But with you, I feel there’s no need to be suspicious."
"Thank you for your trust. However, I think getting a DNA test would give everyone more peace of mind." She was the one to suggest it.
’Even though it’s an indisputable fact, a test would set everyone’s mind at ease and prevent anyone who doesn’t know the situation from raising questions!’
Before Chadwick Whitman could respond, Renee Rhodes spoke in a gentle but firm tone.
"There’s no need for one. A mother knows. I knew you were my daughter the moment I saw you."
Vesper Grayson smiled. "Just because you don’t have doubts doesn’t mean other people won’t. Getting a test will save us from future trouble!"
"Well..." Renee Rhodes subconsciously glanced at her son.
