Chapter 203: Chapter 203: Never Mention It Again

"Miss Grayson, this is Sebastian Kensington. Do you remember me?"

’Of course I remember him, but why is he calling me?’

"Is Miss Kensington feeling unwell?"

"No, my grandmother is in very good health. She’d like to invite you and Elias over for dinner."

’Inviting us over for no reason? I’m afraid there’s more to it.’

"Mr. Kensington, please just tell me what this is about."

Sebastian Kensington hadn’t expected her to be so direct. He fell silent for a moment before speaking.

"Since you put it that way, Miss Grayson, I won’t beat around the bush. A friend of my grandmother’s is also suffering from a severe illness, and we were hoping you might be able to help treat her."

’Just as I thought.’

"President Kensington, healing is a matter of fate. I don’t treat just anyone."

’If I’d really wanted to become famous for my medical skills, I would have dropped my grandmaster’s name as a divine doctor long ago. My doorstep would probably be worn down by visitors by now.’

"I understand. You only treated my grandmother as a favor to Elias. It was presumptuous of me," Sebastian Kensington said, his tone earnest and sincere. "It’s just that her situation is dire. She doesn’t have long to live, which is why I’m asking for your help. But please rest assured, I haven’t revealed any of your information without your permission."

Vesper Grayson was silent for a moment. "Tell me a little about her condition. I can’t guarantee I’ll be able to help."

’Just like Justine Hughes. Her type of cancer required surgery.’

Sebastian Kensington quickly recounted the woman’s situation.

"Last night, she started vomiting blood and wouldn’t stop, then she fell into a coma. The doctors examined her and tried every emergency measure they could, but in the end, they told us to prepare for the worst..."

"Okay, I understand. Let me think about it."

After hanging up, she went to the bedroom.

She took a wooden box from the bottom of her closet, which contained the lifelong notes of her grandmaster.

She remembered a case inside that seemed somewhat similar to the situation Sebastian Kensington had described.

...

"Sebastian, how did it go? Did Miss Grayson agree to come?"

Miss Kensington slowly descended the stairs. Who would have imagined that just a short while ago, she had been bedridden, as frail as a withered branch.

Sebastian Kensington hurried forward to help her to the sofa.

"Miss Grayson is still considering it. If she doesn’t agree, then Sterling can only resign herself to fate."

Hearing this, Miss Kensington’s expression turned grave.

"Take me over to the Sterlings’ later for a look."

"If Miss Grayson refuses, it won’t help even if you go. I suggest you don’t go for now."

It wouldn’t save her, and they couldn’t reveal who had saved Miss Kensington in the first place.

Miss Kensington didn’t insist.

"Fine. I’ll do as you say."

She suddenly remembered something. "Did you call Elias?"

"You’ve probably heard about the Nash family’s case. The verdict is in."

"How many years did they get?"

"Five years."

"If I recall correctly, Elias and Noah are friends..."

"Between a friend and a wife, he knows his priorities. Miss Grayson is Elias’s bottom line."

Miss Kensington sighed wistfully.

...

When Jared Hawthorne called, Vesper Grayson was still looking through the notes.

There were too many cases, so she had to go through them page by page.

"I’ll be home for lunch."

Vesper Grayson smiled. "Not busy at the office?"

"Not busy. Have you forgotten what today is?"

"What day is it?"

"We have an appointment for your check-up."

The reminder made her slap her forehead.

"I would have completely forgotten if you hadn’t reminded me... President Kensington called me just now."

"What did he want?"

Vesper Grayson explained the situation.

"Everyone has their own destiny. Don’t get involved." Jared Hawthorne wasn’t familiar with the Sterling family and had no business dealings with them. However, he’d heard that the head of the Sterlings had been poisoned three years ago and was left a shell of a man, neither dead nor alive. Since then, Mrs. Sterling had been managing everything on her own.

"The symptoms he described... I remember seeing them in my grandmaster’s notes..." Her gaze suddenly landed on a section of the notebook. "I found it. It’s colchicine poisoning."

"You mean someone poisoned Mrs. Sterling?"

"I didn’t say that. I’d need to verify it in person."

Chronic colchicine poisoning results from the long-term accumulation of trace amounts of the toxin. A sudden outbreak indicates the poison has entered the bloodstream and corroded the organs. Western medicine wouldn’t be able to detect it, nor could it offer a cure.

She was just going by the description, which seemed similar. But she hadn’t seen the patient in person, so she couldn’t jump to conclusions.

"Is this type of poison easy to treat?" Jared Hawthorne asked in a low voice.

"I can’t speak for anyone else, but with my grandmaster’s notes, there’s a slim chance of saving her. We’d have to force the toxins out of her body, then have her take a Detoxification and Organ Protection Pill. That medicine specifically counteracts plant-based poisons. However, the pill has to be made to order, and several of the ingredients are expensive and hard to find."

Her grandmaster had written down the method for making it, but compounding medicine wasn’t always successful on the first attempt.

"It’s time-consuming, exhausting, and stressful. You shouldn’t get involved. I’ll turn down the Kensington family for you."

Jared Hawthorne didn’t want his woman to overexert herself.

"But then Mrs. Sterling will surely die!"

"Everyone has their own destiny. Come downstairs."

"You’re home?"

"Yes."

Vesper Grayson quickly put the notebook away and went downstairs.

Just then, she saw the man’s tall figure walking in from the foyer.

"Husband..."

She threw herself into his arms, wrapping her hands around his firm waist, looking gentle and sweet.

A smile played on Jared Hawthorne’s lips. He clearly enjoyed the title. He wrapped an arm around her shoulder and said in a low voice, "I bought you some snacks."

Vesper Grayson took the bag and glanced inside. It was filled with all sorts of dried and candied fruits.

It was exactly what she had been craving recently.

She popped a piece into her mouth. It was sweet and sour, wonderfully appetizing, and even helped ease her morning sickness.

"Is it that good?" Jared Hawthorne couldn’t help but smile when he saw her eyes crinkle with delight and the look of pure enjoyment on her face.

"It’s delicious. Here, try some."

She placed a piece in his mouth.

The moment the fruit was in his mouth, a sharp sourness exploded on his tongue, making his teeth ache and throat clench. He frowned instinctively.

"It’s too sour."

"What do you mean? This is how it’s supposed to taste."

To her, it was the perfect mix of sweet and sour, and it really whetted her appetite.

"They say craving sour means it’s a boy, and spicy means it’s a girl. Could this one be a son?" Jared Hawthorne’s large hand came to rest on her belly.

Vesper Grayson laughed. "Those are just old wives’ tales. You don’t actually believe that, do you?"

"As long as it’s our baby, I’ll love it." Jared Hawthorne led her to the dining room.

After lunch, he coaxed Vesper Grayson into taking a nap. Once she was asleep, Jared Hawthorne called Sebastian Kensington.

"Don’t bring up the matter of treating the Sterling family again. My wife is pregnant now; she doesn’t have the energy to get involved in other people’s business."

...

"Elias turned it down. He said not to bring up Sterling’s matter again."

Sebastian Kensington relayed Jared Hawthorne’s message. Since he had personally intervened, there was no hope for the treatment.

Miss Kensington sighed. "I understand."

Just then, a maid brought in an invitation.

"Young Master, this is an invitation from the Hawthorne family."

Sebastian Kensington took it. It was a wedding invitation.

"Grandmother, Elias and Miss Grayson are getting married on Moonlight Isle next week."

"That’s wonderful news. Make sure you prepare a generous gift."

...

After she woke up from her nap, Jared Hawthorne took her for the prenatal check-up.

The doctor patiently asked some questions and then performed an ultrasound.

"The fetal heart rate is steady, and all the other indicators look great. Everything is very healthy."

Jared Hawthorne asked for a detailed list of things to be mindful of.

While he was occupied, Vesper Grayson slipped away to the restroom.

As she rounded a corner, she accidentally bumped right into someone, and she instinctively shielded her stomach.

Then, a pleasantly surprised voice sounded in her ear.

"Vesper?"
