Mushoku Tensei: Life and Strife.
Chapter 63: Tale of the Chuunibyou hero ( 2 )
Rudeus’s POV.
…
Rudeus Greyrat here. As a skilled magician, I’ve gained notoriety for my ability to use magic without chanting spells and my unique way of mixing the different elements.
One year ago, I was caught in a magical disaster and teleported to the Demon Continent. I met a weird guy who called himself the Man-God who told me to go and help a Superd Tribe demon.
My hometown was on the exact opposite side of the map, which meant I had to travel halfway across the world to get back. I became an adventurer to earn money as I started out on the long voyage home.
…
In the past year, I’ve successfully cut my way across the Demon Continent. We had a lot of twists and turns during the journey, but we eventually arrived at Wind Port.
Out of the blue, I received a revelation from Man-God to buy some food at a street stall and search the alleyways by myself. That resulted in saving a little girl who called herself Demon Empress Kishirika Kishirisu.
She was obviously just a kid playing pretend. I felt bad since it looked like she didn’t have any friends, so I played along… and~ she poked my eye. That was how I obtained the Eye of Foresight, which enables me to see a few seconds into the future.
Using the demon eye, I managed to defeat Eris, so I got a little overconfident and fought with Ruijerd… It looks like I got a little ahead of myself. All that aside, this eye still had its appeal. I beat Eris, after all.
That was when the Wise Old Sage appeared with a poof inside my head, with his bald head and sunglasses. “Now you don’t have to get smacked around all the time to see how far you’ve come!” he said.
All right, then. Thank you, breast-loving Wise Old Sage. Hmm. Thinking about all the ways I could use this eye really did make my heart soar!
…
The plan was to ride a ship towards Zant Port, but a problem occurred. The price to bring Ruijerd through the boat was ludicrous- two hundred green ore coins. Like, why is it so high in the first place?!
For reference, a single green ore coin equals 1,000 yen. And a scarp iron coin is worth 10 yen. A B-ranked mission in the Demon Continent netted you about five to ten scrap iron coins, which is the equivalent of at most 100 yen.
Well, there were ways to deal with the problem. The straightforward approach of earning money and paying the fee, making a killing by dungeon diving in a labyrinth, or striking a deal with a smuggler. It was all rejected.
I had intended to sell my staff, but Ruijerd had stopped me. We were having this big conversation about why I shouldn’t choose to sell the staff when a smuggler came out of nowhere.
The smuggler was the same man I tangled with previously, the guy whose shoulder I bumped into after receiving my Eye of Foresight. I never dreamed he would come to thank me in the middle of the night, though. He really was a thug.
It was such a convenient development. I would’ve suspected him of lying, but there was also the Man-God’s advice. Perhaps the whole point was so I would meet this man. Whatever the case was, he came to strike a deal.
The details of the deal were that one of the guys from their smuggling organisation had stored some goods that they shouldn’t have. Because of that, the man, Gallus Cleaner, wanted us to release those people so they could get back to their homes.
I considered it. A lot of this was suspicious. Still, this was something that transpired as a result of the Man-God’s advice. While it was true that I couldn’t trust the god himself, I was probably best off not overthinking things and going with the flow, just like I did last time.
Based on what we’d heard, we wouldn’t be committing any crimes. There was a good chance the person we were helping was a horrible monster, but saving someone was still saving someone, regardless of their character.
Besides, we could really use a smuggler to lead us across the ocean. This wasn’t a bad deal if we could cross without any charges or fees in return. With all that, it was easy to come to a decision.
And so, Eris and I went on the boat while Ruijered travelled through the smuggling route.
…
The layout of the city of Zant Port was similar to that of Wind Port, but a whole lot greener. Mysteriously enough, all of the conveniently priced ones had no rooms left. Apparently, the reason was because rainy season is almost upon us.
At present, Ruijerd was being treated as a slave being smuggled. With Ruijerd’s spear in one hand, I made my way to the wharf and then to the pier on the edge. I had intended to look for Ruijerd, but… What the hell?
“Bastard”
I was greeted by chocolate-coloured skin, beast ears, and a tiger’s tail. Ghislaine…? No, it wasn’t. They looked similar, but it wasn’t her. The man let out a howl and grabbed me by the collar.
Another man appeared. He looked similar to Ghislaine. but had white hair. An older man.
“Gyes, I found Tona’s scent in a room in the basement. She was here. That is certain."
“Let’s take this young boy back to the village and interrogate him. He might have taken them somewhere. And once we make him spill, we’ll set out again and search—”
“There’s no time. The last ship leaves tomorrow.”
Gyes gritted his teeth.
“We have no choice but to give up. Consider it fortuitous enough that we managed to save the Sacred Beast. Take him home with us. He may be a child, but if he was working with those smugglers, then he’ll have to be punished.”
And so, draped over Gyes’ shoulder, I was carried off deep into the forest.
