Mr. CEO's Substitute Bride
Chapter 1661 - 1636: Where Your Gaze Falls, There Is Eternity: Fulfilling a Wife’s Duties
Seeing my son sitting there not moving, I, Lorelei Howard, anxiously reminded him.
Violet Zimmerman waved her hand weakly and said, "It’s fine, probably ate something bad at noon. I feel much better after throwing up."
Daxton Lancaster’s phoenix-like eyes tightened slightly; he clearly didn’t believe Violet Zimmerman’s explanation.
New Year’s Eve dinner, the whole family gathered, the table full of people all cheerful and excited, with only two looking perfunctory.
One was Joseph Lancaster, the other was Daxton Lancaster; both brothers had heavy thoughts weighing on them.
Violet didn’t know what was wrong with her—dizzy and nauseous, no appetite. Because it was New Year’s Eve dinner, it wouldn’t be appropriate to leave early, so she could only grit her teeth and stay with everyone.
New Year always comes with drinking to celebrate. Daxton had quite a bit of baijiu, and by the time they finished dinner he was clearly drunk, even his walking was unsteady.
Violet was already feeling very unwell, and worried he might fall, so she had no choice but to force herself to help him, enduring her own discomfort.
The most sober one in the family was Joseph. While several brothers kept toasting the elders and the eldest brother, he alone quietly ate his food.
He knew perfectly well that his big brother wanted to use alcohol to drown his sorrows, and at the same time he was worried that once his brother got drunk, he’d make things hard for his sister-in-law again.
Daxton walked along chuckling to himself, muttering nonstop, "This year really is a good year... I, Daxton Lancaster, have a son now, and... my wife’s pregnant again..."
"Daxton, what nonsense are you talking?" Violet hadn’t heard the conversation between her mother-in-law and her husband, so she had no idea they thought she was pregnant.
"I’m talking nonsense?" Daxton lifted those phoenix eyes; the drunk man’s eyelids were drooping. "Violet, you know perfectly well what you’ve been doing behind my back."
In the end, Violet felt guilty, because she had kissed her husband’s younger brother... behind his back. With the younger brother right beside her now, she couldn’t exactly deny it.
So she could only deliberately change the subject. "Daxton, you’ve had too much to drink."
"I haven’t!" Daxton flung Violet off with one jerk. She was already unwell, and being thrown like that, she staggered several steps before she managed to steady herself.
She pressed a hand to her temple and gave her head a light shake before the bout of dizziness finally eased.
At the same moment Daxton shook off Violet, his own body also lurched a few steps. Joseph hurried over to support him, grabbing Daxton’s wrist and slinging it around his own neck.
"Big brother, you’re drunk. I’ll take you back to sleep it off."
"Heh... hehehe..." Daxton slanted his eyes at his younger brother Joseph, chuckled and said, "Blood brothers are still the best. Women... are nothing but tools for having children!"
Joseph instinctively glanced back. Violet was trailing behind with her head down; under the dim streetlamp, he couldn’t make out the expression on her face.
But Joseph knew her heart had to be hurting.
"Joseph..." Daxton slapped Joseph’s shoulder. A drunk man doesn’t know his own strength; even through the padded jacket, each smack sounded sharp.
"My good brother! No matter what you’ve done, you’re still your big brother’s good brother! For life! No one gets to sow discord between the two of us!"
"Big brother, no one’s sowing discord. We’re blood brothers." Joseph agreed helplessly, fully aware of what his brother was really referring to.
"Right, we’re blood brothers. Everything else is bullshit!" Daxton flung his hand out, continuing to ramble drunkenly.
Violet followed behind them with her head bowed, her feelings a muddled haze.
Joseph helped Daxton into the room. "Big brother, I’m heading back. Get some rest."
"Mm, mm..." Daxton sat at the edge of the bed, one hand braced on his knee, head hanging, eyes closed. He looked very drunk.
After hesitating for a moment, Joseph still chose to leave.
Even if he was worried, he couldn’t very well sleep in the couple’s room.
Violet came out of the bathroom; she had just washed her face with cold water, but the dizziness was still intense, not eased at all.
She walked up to Daxton. "Daxton, let me wipe your face."
Daxton said nothing, still bracing his knee with his hand, head lowered as he fought the vertigo. Violet squatted down in front of him; the instant the warm towel touched Daxton’s face, he grabbed her wrist.
A drunk man is very strong. With one jerk of his arm, Violet was flung onto the bed. Before she could react, a heavy weight was already pressing down on her.
Daxton’s bloodshot eyes stared down at Violet. "Pregnant again?"
Violet...
It took her quite a while to process what those words meant.
Her embroidered brows knit together as she scolded, "What nonsense are you spouting?"
"I’m spouting nonsense?" Daxton tugged at the corner of his mouth in a sneer. Though he’d drunk a lot, his bloodshot eyes were clear. Before Violet could speak, he went on,
"If you’re not pregnant, why were you puking so hard, huh? Really just ate something bad, or you don’t dare admit it?"
Violet...
"I haven’t admitted to anything!"
"You haven’t?" With that one retort, Daxton’s lips curved slightly.
"Haven’t you done enough together, hmm? Tell me, how many times has Joseph had you?
Don’t think I don’t know. Everything you two do can’t escape my eyes.
On X month X day, Joseph came over at two in the afternoon, stayed in the room for half an hour before leaving. Half an hour is plenty of time for you to run through the whole routine.
And on X month X day, Joseph came at three in the afternoon and only left right before I got home..."
"You had the servants at home spying on me?" Violet asked in disbelief.
Daxton gave a cold laugh. "Don’t make it sound so ugly. I’m the master. All I have to do is casually ask, and they’ll tell me."
Staring at the man before her whose face was white as paper, Violet suddenly realized he had this terrifying side to him too.
On the surface he pretended to know nothing, but in secret he had everything in his grasp.
She couldn’t tell if what she felt inside was disappointment or bleakness. Violet emphasized, "I’m your wife!" Not a prisoner!
"Mm, so you have to fulfill a wife’s obligations."
Daxton picked up the thread of the conversation as if it were the most natural thing in the world, then started stripping off her clothes and pants.
Violet had already caught a chill, her head spinning and her whole body weak. Within a few minutes, Daxton had her stripped completely bare.
